Hi, well yes you can cut down the length of these. As far is ripping goes, if you insist in using a hand saw [ rip saw ] that is fine, I my self would use a jig saw before using a hand saw. Unless you mean a circular saw with a rip blade, those are fine as well and watching wood fly off the saw can be fun especially if the output is facing the side of a house so you can watch the boards bounce off it. Back when I worked for Georgia Pacific we [ the saw cut crew ] enjoyed watching the rip table saw lift up 4 x 8 sheets of plywood and fire them across the ware house like they were caught up in a hurricane destroying them in the process, of course eventually some one in management figured out that the small amount extra of wood a precision cut blade uses was still less extra wood then the 50 foot pile of scrap that the rip saw left in its wake. How ever If your planning on using the boards for a project rather then for kindling, then you may wish to use a table saw with a cross cut blade, it may remove a small amount more material then a rip blade but will also offer a better final product. When saw mills use rip blades it is for production over accuracy wile loosing as little material as possible. So in the end the choice is yours to make, do you need to do production cutting to cut as many boards as possible in the shortest amount of time sacrificing accuracy and safety. Or are you looking to do precision cuts like a crafts man looking to make a finely crafted end product.

Yes you can rip them into a 1"x3", they are plenty stable enough for the cut.

These boards appear to be made up of glued 1 X 2 boards with finger-joint ends where extensions are needed. I haven't tried it, but since they are made from pine 1 X 2 stock, ripping may be possible, but you might loose integrity where the glued joint comes into play if it is too close to the rip line.

I wouldn't unless your design style is modern boring. Chair rail on modern TV shows is not what was been used for a few hundred years. But it could go with a Scandinavian motif. Additionally, the reason for chair rail in the first place was to keep chairs from denting the wall. This wood is pretty soft and dents easily.

Yes it can depending upon your design will depend upon how you install it, but it will work for a wainscoting type trim. It is stable enough for various design styles and holds paint well.

my H/D cuts for me when I ask and in this location they have a toolbox hand cross cut saw of 20 inches and measuring tapes on a station with a cut it yourself area.

Hi, yes they do cut wood at the store, how ever they do not offer precision cuts so the tolerance is 1/4 to 1/2 inch from what you request.

Unless that department is extremely busy or the saw is not working I'm sure they would. Also, all the HD's I've visited have a "cut your own" saw table in the millwork department.

Yes they will. I have not yet encountered a time at which I have not been able to have something cut through my local Home Depot store. Just have some patience with the staff and they will do whatever they can to help accommodate your requests.

I think every Home Depot has a cutting station where you can cut it yourself. You simply pay for the whole board, cut it and take the pieces to the register.

I can carry one with two fingers. Not sure what that means in weight, but I easily lift three out at a time with one hand.

I don't know the exact weight, but was able to hold board over my head, to install on roof eave and nail with other hand. No serious strain on arm or shoulders.

I would not recommend it. If you paint it real well with exterior paint and design the box to shed water, maybe. Still the wood is just plain pine with no treatment except a primer coat. I use a round-over router bit for the top edge and cap it with base cap trim for a real nice baseboard. All indoors.

With a couple of coats of a good exterior paint the boards should hold up well to the weather. Add some pressure-treated blocks to keep it off the ground. My preference would be to build it with pressure-treated studs, plywood and deck screws then prime and paint.

Yes, you are correct, the only way you will achieve water resistance is by painting every surface with a minimum of two coats of high quality exterior paint.

Hi, this wood is just primered, not sealed. I would go with pressure treated wood, or a unprimered wood and soak it in polyurethane.
