I have a contemporary house with a shed roof. Can this be installed on a shed roof?
Asked by: Handyman
if it is a standard asphalt shingled roof it can be installed, it needs a truss or rafter to get a good bite when nailed into place.. I am sure you already know this just by looking at it, but You do not install this over an existing shingled roof, you must install it while shingling the roof. It is not a retrofit.. However you can slap this down temporarily over the shingles if you need a temporary harness anchor while stripping the old roof and putting on a new one.

Will this device fit over a ridge vent and still be able to secure to a roof safely?

Asked by: Jon
No, there ridge vent is hollow and would not allow for proper installation if a load were to be put on the anchor it would smash the vent and could possibly come loose. You should mount the anchor first and then install the ridge vent. If the vent is already in place I would recommend removing it, install the anchor and then replace the vent. .

installation suggestions

installing on existing roof, with 1/2 plywood - how critical is it to actually nail into the frame, as opposed to just the plywood? Also, should some roofing material be used at nail holes to prevent leaking? Thanks
Asked by: Joseph
This anchor is designed to be installed at the ridge. it should be fastened into a rafter. You should remove the ridge cap first, if the anchor is being installed as a retrofit and not with a new roof. You would then install the anchor and replace the ridge cap over it. The d-rings should extend past the bottom edge of the ridge cap on either side of the peak. I would highly recommend anchoring into a rafter if you are mounting through plywood. If a person was to take a fall the load could pull the fasteners out if you only fastened into the plywood.

Customer Reviews

Permanent Roof Anchor is rated 4.4 out of 5 by 16.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Good value for essential safety equipment Effective fall prevention tie-off. Looks great (nearly invisible) when installed. Comes complete as packaged, with needed fasteners. The only difficult part is in properly locating the rafter centers to nail it to, since they are covered with roofing prior to installation of the anchor.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from It works and is not to hard to install Works fine. Installation required me remove a few ridge shingles without damaging them and to get under the ridge vent. I had a slight problem due to the fact that the roof rafters did not line up evenly, so I had to split the difference and angle some of the nails. If they had been farther off I couldn't have used this anchor without sistering roof rafters at the ridge to create a solid nailing point.

Put 4 of them in. 2 on main roof 1 each on garage and sunroom. So far so good. Ring is only thing visable after installing cap shingles over top. The strap is stainless steel the ring is cad plated steel. A nice double dipped galvanized ring would provide better corrosion protection than cad plate. Though not versed in metallurgy they may have a reason...cost? The nails are a pain. I used some number 10 x 3 1/2" screws in all of the holes since I used these as temporary anchors before permanently mounting them. Good product
