My joists are 22", can this unit be made to fit?

Asked by Mack October 4, 2020
1
Answer

The tubing is 22 inches in diameter can cannot be made to fit. Consider perhaps the VELUX 14 inch model Sun Tunnel with rigid tubing instead. You will get more light output with a smaller footprint on your roof and in your ceiling.

I have 13in between pitched roof and pitched calling.what set up do I need

Asked by Grumpywood September 17, 2020
1
Answer

If you have a sloped shingled roof of at least a 3:12 pitch (14 degrees) you can use either the TMF 014 or TGF 014 VELUX Sun Tunnel. The flexible tubing system will make for an easy installation.

Are the Domes impact resisrant? If not where is the option to change to impact resistant?

Asked by Rez July 17, 2020

Answer

Yes, the acrylic dome will offer some protection, but if your area requires an Impact Rated dome, you will want to choose the polycarbonate dome to meet that building code. This may be a special order item that can be obtained through your local Home Depot store.

Does size or style( Rigid/ Flexible) matter if you are buying this prior to building your home? t...

Asked by Annabell April 22, 2020
1
Answer

Hi Annabell. Yes, VELUX Sun Tunnels should be selected based on your expected run (distance from roof to interior ceiling level), roof pitch, roofing materials, and expected room size. Rigid Sun Tunnels are best for long runs (~2ft to 30ft), while the flexible Sun Tunnels are designed for short distances(maximum of 8ft). This will help optimize light output. Unsure of which Sun Tunnel will be best for your project? Contact us directly at 1-800-888-3589 and our Customer Service Team will be happy to assist you!

Love the light
Customer review from whyskylights.com logo
My hallway is like a cave, buried in the center of the house. My friend has a similar floor plan but has two solar tubes they are so effective I constantly was trying to turn off the lights when I exited the hall. Now I have the same experience but have learned not to try to turn off the lights when exiting. Now after 12 years of having a cave I have bright light in it. Also got the solar powered LED night light feature. Previously when having company had to suggest the leave lights on so they could see at night, now the hall looks like moon light. Very pleased.

Happy to have more natural light.
Customer review from veluxusa.com logo
We had three sun tunnels installed by a five star installer. Cost of the project was just shy of $5000. Wish I would have investigated a bit more before proceeding. The trim rings allow you to see the four mounting screws. Called customer service and they said someting about white tape to cover the screws. The highest unit is about 15 feet in the air and has about 9 dead bugs in it. Thought these would have been sealed better. I have not removed them yet because now I need to buy a 12 foot step ladder to service this unit. We had a electric light install in another and it is a florescent buld with an odd base connector. The contractor removed an existing can light and tossed the fixture into the attic while using it as a junction box. Not sure I would call that upto code or expected of a five star installer. The trim rings are also difficult to remove as there is not much to grip onto to rotate the ring off.

Let there be light and there was!
Customer review from whyskylights.com logo
My house was so dark in the living area and due to the pitch of my roof, I wasn't able to have skylights. Sun Tunnels were the only option if I wanted more light. They are awesome! My friend even turned back the other day to remind me to turn out the lights then realized I didn't have any lights on. It was the Sun Tunnel.

TSR 10” Sun Tunnel installed 2 years ago. Amazing. Always think lights switch left on. BUT time to get dead bugs out. Got Trim Ring off. No clue of how to get diffuser removed. Ideas?

Love the light, hate the bugs.
Customer review from veluxusa.com logo
Had mine professionally installed by a contractor last year as part of a remodel. Put it in the utility room with no natural light. What a difference! Love how much light it lets in even after sundown. Unfortunately, within a couple of months there were a least a couple dozen dead, squarish bugs about 1/2" long in it. The contractor came back and cleaned them out and checked the installation and said everything was tight. But the bugs just keep accumulating. When I try to twist the trim ring to take it off to clean them out, it won't budge. Afraid I will break it. This sucks because I love the light but the bugs look terrible and are unavoidable when you look at it. So again, based on the performance, this tube is great. But the bugs really bring down the satisfaction. Not being able to easily clean it just compounds the issue.

Response from Customer ServiceJanuary 31, 2019
Having bugs on the diffuser lens can be disconcerting. These little bugs can get through the tiniest of openings to get towards the light. Please ensure that all screw heads, holes or tubing seams are covered with aluminum tape to prevent other insects from getting into the tubing. Please email us @ vcustomer.service@velux.com for instructions on how to remove the trim ring and diffuser to clean that area of that debris.

Not entirely thrilled
Customer review from veluxusa.com logo
No doubt the two sun tunnels I had professionally installed add much needed light to a dark kitchen. However, the light projected onto the ceiling lens has a number of "hot spots" and irregularities. It's not a deal-breaker, but it's nothing I've read about or seen in other reviews. The Velux rep looked at them and told me it's not uncommon to get this effect. If I'd known ahead of time, I might have invested in something different. Also, LED lights have not performed as advertised. May be bad batteries--will have to see what happens after they're replaced.

Response from Customer ServiceJanuary 3, 2019
The direction of the incoming sun light on the angles formed by the joints of the elbow can cause this effect in some installations, and unfortunately there is not a common solution for this issue. We do offer diffuser films for the ceiling ring that are designed to help evenly disperse the light flow, and may help reduce this "hot spot" effect.
