Questions & Answers

Are there 40 pipes?

Are there 40 pipes?
Asked by: Treway
Not exactly, the number of items in stock varies according to the store. The SCH. 40 refers to Schedule 40 of the Nominal Pipe Size (NPS) specification of The American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) which describes the outer diameter and the thickness of the wall of the pipe. In this case, the outer diameter is 3.5 inches , and the wall thickness is 0.216 inches. The larger the Schedule number, the thicker the pipe wall. This description determines the strength of the pipe. Schedule 40 is a pipe that is strong enough for use as drain/waste/vent (DWV) for most residential and some commercial plumbing applications (depending on the details of the Code of the jurisdiction). For a thinner walled pipe, there is Series 200 (not commonly available for 3" pipe), and a thicker walled pipe is Schedule 80 (0.3" wall). The thickness of the pipe wall also determines the maximum pressure that the pipe can hold, although most PVC fittings are no longer pressure rated. I hope this addresses your question.

Does this pipe have a Matte finish or a gloss finish?
Asked by: Froghead
Finishes will vary based upon where they source it from, however it is typically a matte finish, those that are more glossy lose their gloss within months and are more difficult to paint.
