Product Overview

  • Plant in spring in a partial sun location
  • Plant in spring in a full sun to partially shaded location
  • Roots are shipped in a dormant state, ready to plant after frost
Of all the hardy orchids for sale, none are easier to grow then Bletilla. These spring-flowering perennial hardy orchids are quite durable in a wide range of garden conditions. If you have always thought hardy orchids were difficult to grow, then give Bletilla a try. Bletilla flowers are somewhat reminiscent of the popular house plant Orchid Dendrobium, only they are smaller. In the wild, this hardy orchid grows in semi-wooded conditions, in the shade of tall grass meadows, and along the edge of forests. In the garden, feel free to plant them in a partial sun spot with moist, well-drained soil. Bletilla striata, also commonly called Chinese Ground Orchid, is a terrestrial orchid that produces cattleya-like pink, purplish flowers atop papery-textured sword-shaped pale, green leaves.
  • Blooms for 10 weeks and a good container plant
  • Also known as hardy garden orchid
  • Drought tolerant
  • Bulb size 2/3 eye
  • Very rare in the wild these days
  • Also commonly called chinese ground orchid
  • Pink purplish flowers atop papery-textured sword-shaped pale green leaves
  • Best grown in organically rich, medium moisture, well-drained soil in part shade
  • Best to mulch in zone 5 as its winter hardiness in it is not reliable

Have had these in growing nicely for 18 years in the ground and they keep multiplying/ It brings a touch of the tropics like being in Hawaii where these grow wild.

Is this plant a perinal and how much sun does it like?

Asked by: Go
Perennial. They do need to be mulched well in the cold wintertime. Morning sun is good, but hot afternoon can burn the foliage.
