Questions & Answers

Can it be use on cfurniture

Asked by Millie September 27, 2020

Happy to clear things up, Millie! Rust-Oleum Varathane Water-Based Floor Polyurethane is designed for use on floors, and we recommend it for use on them only. For interior furniture, we recommend Rust-Oleum Varathane Water-Based Ultimate Polyurethane instead. https://www.homedepot.com/p/Varathane-1-qt-Clear-Satin-Water-Based-Interior-Polyurethane-200241H/100169146 - Rust-Oleum Product Support 3

How long before it is safe to put an area rug on the floor after final coat?

Asked by josh August 13, 2020

Happy to help, Josh! You should allow the Rust-Oleum Varathane Water-Based Floor Polyurethane to dry for 3 days before subjecting the surface to normal use. - Rust-Oleum Product Support 1

Can this be used over oil based polyurethane as a last coat? I put oil based poly on pine boards...

Asked by Mark July 17, 2020

Happy to help, Mark! While Rust-Oleum Varathane Water-Based Floor Polyurethane can be used over the oil-based version. Please keep in mind that it will not prevent or lessen the amber tone of the oil-based finish. If using on a floor, the initial polyurethane used must also be a floor-grade polyurethane to ensure longevity. - Rust-Oleum Product Support 3

How much does it cost ???

Asked by Turf June 30, 2020

We recommend reaching out to your local store for pricing of Rust-Oleum Varathane Water-Based Floor Finish. - Rust-Oleum Product Support 3

We applied 3 coats of Varathane water based polyurethane on our new maple floors before we realized it wasn't this.

Asked by Laurie December 2, 2019

Happy to clear things up, Laurie! While Rust-Oleum Varathane Water-Based Floor Polyurethane is suitable for use on previously finished surfaces, the finish on the floor needs to be floor-grade to ensure longevity of the new coating. This is because as the surface is walked on, the previous coating can crack and delaminate, which will cause the new coating to come up with it. We recommend removing any coats of Rust-Oleum Varathane Water-Based Ultimate Polyurethane from from the surface prior to applying any floor coating. - Rust-Oleum Product Support 3

1- what sanding grit should be used in between coats of topcoat if let dry more than 24 hours 2- ...

Asked by Justin September 21, 2019

Rust-Oleum Varathane Water-Based Floor Polyurethane does not require a sanding sealer before use. If one is used, make sure to follow any instructions for the sanding sealer. If a coat has dried more than 24 hours, we recommend lightly sanding with a finer grit sandpaper. If needing further assistance, please give us a call at 800-901-0411 to talk with us. - Rust-Oleum Product Support 3

Dog proof why no longer available in store
I refinished my entire house with this varnish about the time the San Leandro Home Deopot store 0625 open , wellmover 30 years ago , that's right ! During that period countless hyper active dogs with their sharp claws played on it , did everything pupies and adult do . we had countless kids then teenagers and growned up parties . these are the photo of my entryway and kitchen floor . This varnish is perfect for anyone looking for fasrt reliable result it dry and can be use for traffic in 12 hours , I dragged a 400lbs piece of furniture across the floor 12 hours after applicatioin {not recommended } I used felt pad . Unlike oil it does not require ventilation unlike oil it is extremely easy to apply using the varathane wool pad , you can walk on it very fairly quickly . Major draw back if you need to remove the varnish , be prepared for very hard work , most sanders including pro sanders will have a hard time . Based on my experience leaving on a floor with extensive use { by the way we do not have dirt in the garden , sand a, dogs bring plenty of it inside . I have a very hard time to comprehend why Home Depot has pulled off the shelves this varnish which is very environement friendly in favor of the stinky oil varnish with result to be proven House was built around 1902 the entryway dining room and leaving room are the original floors the kitchen floors are 14 years old {instalation} they are actually quater sawn white oak salvage form river which were harvested around 1860 as they were fallen with axes and said to have been some 400 years old at the time they were cut , which make our kitchen floor 560 years old {I hope which ever house flipper buy this house after us will understand Refinished with varathane water based varnish for posterity .

Awesome, durable product!
I use this product to hand finish custom furniture that I make. When the proper time is taken between coats for drying and sanding, the finish turns out amazing. The attached photos don't do the product justice.

Nice to work with, but it is expensive...
When we purchased this house, one room upstairs had some dark brown hardwood flooring which was a mess. Being that we are still unsure of exactly how the final flooring will look like in that area of the house (other priorities), we decided to sand the old floor down to the bare wood, and buy a gallon of Varathane brand Diamond Clear Satin Water-Based Floor Finish... Our intent was to refinish the room, and have a nice floor that was bright, with a nice finish, all at the lowest possible cost. We did a four hour Floor Sander rental from Home Depot, and went at it. Because the room was only 10' x 10', we brushed this product on by hand, putting on three coats. Considering the conditon and color of the floor before hand, it now looks GREAT. The varathane has darkened the wood a bit, but it is still very light.. almost exactly what we were hoping for. The job we did may not be PRO, but it sure is close, and you could not tell just by looking at it. We are very pleased with this product, how it went on,, and the finished look it gave to our old floor. Only time will tell how well it will wear and perform. Considering that we had a 100 sq ft floor space to cover, and we did that three times, we still have about 1/4 of a gallon in the container available to use on other future projects.

Amazing Product
This wood finish was incredible. It went on easily. I used a brush and there were no brush marks. It dried beautifully and i couldnt be happier with it. I Highly recommend it.

Low Oder easy apply
So easy to apply with the universal applicator. I only applied it about 3 weeks ago so I’m unsure how it wears. But it looks great so far. And low oder, that’s the best part. I used over oil based stain, it says 24 hours to put over top but I waited 48 hours

Good stuff
Great, easy to apply, durable - had this on our cottage floor (just put 3 coats on over sanded chip board) for 10 years - looked quite acceptable and stood up great to kids, dogs, wet feet, sand, and grit. Put it on the floor of our storage area over the garage recently. Just as good there.

Horrible product
Roller and paint marks will not disappear. I spent almost 160 $ on 2 of these, I will now have to get someone to strip off the mess and do it all over again. Will never buy Varathane products again.

Terrible product
I bought this product to stain my hardwood floor. Drying time is much longer than what the can says. I would say that each layer takes 12 hours!! Because of this I’m forced to leave the floor with two layers of the color even though it needs a third one, too long!

Best Product
I have used this product at two of my houses. I have a 120lb Bull Mastiff and a cat. This product is great. For re-screening every 2 years at my home its easy, self leveling. If you apply it on a floor that has no finish to it, you will need at least 4 coats. Follow the instructions!

Some Metals will make Water Based Products
Be careful what you use too stir all Water Base Chemicals because certain Metals will change your Product to all different Colors. Other than that, this Stuff is Awesome. I found using a Cheap Paint Brush with thin Coats works the Best. It gets Hard as a Rock and is even Tough to Sand if you Applied it Right
