Varathane 8 oz. Mahogany Gloss Water-Based Interior Stain and Polyurethane (4-Pack) provides a fast and simple solution to stain and protect wood in just one step. Stain and polyurethane is a time-saver that provides a rich color and polyurethane in one product allowing projects to be finished quickly. Using a high quality synthetic bristle brush, apply in thin coats until uniform coverage is achieved. At least two coats recommended, customize color or achieve a darker color by adding additional coats.

Not Stain
Calling this product a stain is very misleading. It’s more like a translucent acrylic paint. Doesnt soak into the wood at all (you can easily sand it off). The fact that it doesnt soak in also makes it increibly difficult to acheive uniformity. Going back to traditional stain with a poly coat afterwards. Never using this product again

That was not the intention! It is not unusual for the color of the Rust-Oleum Varathane Water-Based Stain and Polyurethane to appear blotchy or uneven for the first couple coats, however, the color will even out as the thickness of the coating is built up over multiple applications. - Rust-Oleum Product Support 5

Never buy this product
I used this product two times. First time I thought I didn't stir well, the cabinet doors surface are covered with white cloud spots after I applied. Second time I stirred well, but still a lot white cloud spots. check the image, what can I do?

It went on fairly smooth it was very blender bowl I could control how dark or how light I wanted the stain to be it worked very well very pleasedPS: I wish the price point to the consumer was a little bit lower.M Evans

What a disaster
Very difficult to apply evenly and impossible to avoid lap marks. I thought I'd even it out sanding between coats. Probably could but I'd have to spend hours creatively sanding dark spots to try to get everything to match. So instead of moving on with the rest of the project (9 of 11 panels) with this, I decided to cut bait and start over with something else. Good thing I only used it on one visible panel before deciding to give up on this horrible product. I'll still end up having to replace the panel or try to sand it down to bare wood again. At least I learned a lesson. Don't be lazy and try to do in one shot that which must be done in two steps. If you get a positive result out of this stuff it's just pure luck.

Red Tint
I saw another customer had an issue with this as well in a review on the Home Depot website, the can had an odd red tint, not as advertised, will be retunring.

Please keep in mind that wood can absorb the product differently than how the stain looks inside the can.
