Apply with a rag and rub off the excess. Take care to make it even. The finished results made an old weathered beench look great.

washes away easy
Its nice not having a strong smell in my small shop, but even after 24 hours of the stain drying the polyurethane wipes away the stain. I’m using a water-based, oil modified polyurethane which should work just fine but if a drop sits for more than a second before being wiped it pulls the stain right out of the wood. I have pictures to show

That's odd, Bryan! For the best results and to ensure proper drying of Rust-Oleum Varathane Water-Based Wood Stain, all excess stain must be wiped away after a few minutes. Do not allow the stain to dry before removing all the excess product.

I purchased this Classic Gray stain for a craft project I wanted to do. I was hoping for a true gray stain once dry. The color is extremely light and did not come out the way I was hoping. In some areas, even after going over it a few times, you can’t even tell there color on it. If you are looking for something really pigmented, I suggest going a shade or two darker. Outside of the color, the product was easy to work with, and cured quickly.

Thanks for bringing this to our attention. For the best penetration, it is important to thoroughly sand the wood by beginning with #120 grit sandpaper and progress though #150, #180 and #220 grits. Keep in mind that the final color of the Rust-Oleum Varathane Classic Wood Stain will depend on the wood species. - Rust-Oleum Product Support 5 Rustoleum

I purchased this Smoke Gray wood stain for a craft sign I wanted to make. The color came out perfect for what I was looking for, dark but not black. Product was easy to use, open and stir, begin applying and let sit a few minutes, and wiped off. It is a true smoke gray color once dry and will be perfect for what I needed for my sign. I can’t wait to apply my letters and get it hung.

This water based stain is easy to apply and stains nicely. I am very satisfied with the GUNSTOCK color. I am working on refinishing a 100 year old china hutch. This family heirloom was mahogany stained with varnish for the 1st 60 years and then painted green with an antique black glazed finish 45 years ago. I had to disassemble the hutch and strip all the pieces. Then I applied a PRE-STAIN sealer, and then applied the GUNSTOCK wood stain. I will apply a POLYURETHANE finish and reassemble. I have not finished stripping all of the pieces, but wanted to see how well the stain covered the stripped wood. The PRE-STAIN was easy to apply using a small paint brush. The GUNSTOCK STAIN was very easy to apply. Per the instructions, I used a clean cloth to dip into can and apply in a circular motion covering the wood surface. After 2 minutes, I used a clean cloth to wipe off any excess stain, wiping with the wood grain. Clean up was easy with soap and water, I just tossed the staining cloth into the trash. I recommend this product.

I received this Varathane Classic water-based stain as a member of the Home Depot "seeds" program. I selected the ebony color as I am at the mid point of an ongoing total home renovation project. One of the main features is the replacement of all door, window and base trim, plus cabinets. All the new items are solid oak and we have been using another brand of oil based stain. It does a good job of staining but the oil odor causes headaches for me. So when the opportunity came to test a water based stain I leapt at the chance. Along with the quart of water based stain a quart of the Varathane recommended pre-stain conditioner was included, as well as a quart of the Varathane Ultimate water based clear coat. I was not quite ready to do the next batch of oak trim yet, so I took two pieces of oak stair tread cutoffs and decided to test the stain on those. That would also provide the opportunity to compare the color of the other brand to the color of this Varathane brand. The oak was sanded before conditioner application with a 220 grit sandpaper. I used the same 220 grit to lightly sand after the conditioner had partly dried. The directions state to be certain to use the pre-stain conditioner before applying stain. The procedure is to apply the conditioner, let it soak 2 - 5 minutes and wipe off any excess. Then let it dry 10 - 15 minutes and lightly sand with 220. The water based product tends to raise the wood grain; some species more than others. The light sanding gets rid of the raised fibers. However, do not let the conditioner dry completely before applying stain. Being curious, I applied pre-stain conditioner to one sample of oak and did not apply conditioner to a second sample. The instructions for the stain state to NOT use a brush of any type, but to use a cloth and to wipe the stain into the wood. That is what I did. I used a piece soft wiping cloth, the same that I have been using to wipe down the other stain. There is no noticable odor when working with the conditioner or stain. That will be welcome when working indoors in the colder months. I let the stained oak sit overnight. After the stain was dry I could see a difference between the oak piece that was treated with conditioner and the piece that was not. The treated piece was smooth to the touch and the non treated piece had a slight fuzziness. At this point you cannot sand the wood fibers smooth as that removes stained wood and color. I compared the color of the old stained wood with the new Varathane brand stained oak. I could see no difference. Great! I gave the samples three coats of the Varathane clear coat with about 2 hours between coats as the instructions direct. A very light sanding was done between coats 2 and 3. I could not see any difference between the samples finished with the two different brands. Thumbs up! I like the idea of water-based stains and finishes, both for the low VOC content with the environmental advantages and for the easy soap and water clean up. The absence of oil fumes also makes application and drying time more user friendly. I live in a climate that is very dry most of the year. These water based products dry much faster than an oil based product. That more rapid drying time can be both a good thing and a bad thing. I will need to modify my work pattern to avoid having the pre-stain conditioner and the stain dry too much between work pieces. The extra step of applying the pre-stain conditioner will use some extra time. That is something we will just have to get used to.

Nice product! My ugly laundry room door had water spots and I was looking for an easy, quick solution rather than having to completely sand and restain the whole door. I found this water based stain from Varathane and decided I would try to tone down the yellowy color of the oak and cover up the water stains at the same time. It worked! This product is easy to use and even has a somewhat pleasant scent. Wipe on (circularly) wipe off with the grain, then let dry. I chose Classic Gray which gave my yellow oak door a toned down, white washy look. Much better than how it used to be. I used 2 coats. I might do the same on some of my other doors using other colors.

The Varathane Dark Walnut Water-Based Interior Wood Stain came as three cans. Image_1 shows the wood with nothing applied. The first was Water-Based Pre-Stain Wood Conditioner. The product is used to seal the wood and make the surface uniform to make the stain look uniform. It was easy to apply. It penetrated the wood as described. I followed all the can's instructions except that I used 400 grit sand paper instead of 200 grit. Image_2 shows the wood after Conditioner was applied and excess wiped off. I made one mistake. Before using the Wood Conditioner and before using the stain, I should have assured that there were no glue spots. I mitered two pieces of trim to simulate some of the work I had done the previous week. This was new wood without any paint or varnish to remove. I waited for the prescribed amount of time before applying the stain. So this is the second can of Varathane product and it was called Classic Water Based Wood Stain (Dark Walnut). I was surprised to find the stain was thicker than the stain I used a week or two ago.The can indicates that this will cover 100 Sq Ft. It applied as uniformly as I hoped it would. Instructions had me apply the stain in a circular motion. Seemed unusual. I tried to apply it that way. I typically apply in the direction of the grain. The small area where glue prevented stain from soaking in didn't accept the stain. Image_3 shows the wood with stain applied and excess wiped off. The mitered seam had a bit of excess glue. Photos will show the result. The final can that I received with the Varathane Dark Walnut stain was Varathane Ultimate Polyurethane. This Crystal Clear Satin coating is also Water-Based. So far all of these water based products can be cleaned up with soap and water. I didn't include a photo of the wood with polyurethane applied.

The combination of Varathane Products I used in the restoration of 60+ year old gun butt stocks really brought the pretty back for some grungy, greasy, scratched and dented war horses. I prepped the stocks by dropping them into a bucket of boiling water to raise the dents and remove accumulated grease. I then sanded the stocks and used the Varathane Pre-Stain which sealed the wood. I then used the Varathane gunstock stain which applied evenly really brought-out the natural beauty and grain of the wood. Finally, I applied the Varathane Clear Satin Polyurethane which worked pretty well except I got in a hurry and scratched the first gunstock -as you may see in the photo, before it completely dried. I will repair this scratch.
