Applying this to kitchen cabinets that have no stain on them-just raw wood. Do I need to apply a sealer first?

Asked by Aba April 23, 2021
2
Answers

Thank you for reaching out! Our Varathane Ultimate Water-Based Polyurethane may be applied directly to bare wood. Grain raise will likely occur after the first coat, and can be prevented by using a sanding sealer first. If a sanding sealer is not used, we recommend applying two or three coats of polyurethane, then sanding the surface smooth using a 220-320 grit sandpaper. Wipe the surfaces down to remove the sanding dust, then apply the final one or two coats to ensure an ultra-smooth finish. https://www.homedepot.com/p/Varathane-1-qt-Woodcare-Sanding-Sealer-2-Pack-340444/305627162 - Rust-Oleum Product Support 2

I am thinking that the last batch was not mixed properly or it might have settled in the can while you worked on the other doors or there was some sort of residue on the doors? I would lightly sand the finish and try again.

Can you use a sprayer to apply this to raw wood walls ?

Asked by Dy February 1, 2021
1
Answer

It's very difficult spraying polyurethanes due to the product drying too quickly. The concern is that when you spray the Rust-Oleum Varathane Water-Based Polyurethane, you can get what we call, dry spray. This is essentially a powder that can end up sticking onto the wet film. Additionally, spraying indoors can be problematic as the overspray can make its way into areas that it shouldn't. For this reason, we'd advise against spraying the product. - Rust-Oleum Product Support 1

Thank you for reaching out! Once completely dry, Rust-Oleum Varathane Water-Based Ultimate Polyurethane can be waxed or polish if desired. You will want to ensure the coating is suitable for use in a bathroom. Please keep in mind, the wax or polish will most likely need to be removed before the surface can be recoated if needed. - Rust-Oleum Product Support 3

I applied 4 coats per instructions and it looks great but a wet cup on the table left a hazy white mark. What is wrong?

Asked by Kim October 24, 2020
1
Answer

Hi Kim, the polyurethane is likely not completely cured yet, and this white mark is caused by moisture. The mark should disappear once the surface dries, and once the polyurethane has fully cured, wet cups should not cause this to reoccur. Normal cure time for our water-based polyurethanes are approximately 7-10 days, though thicker applications may take a bit longer. - Rust-Oleum Product Support 2

I bought this for custom wood signs and it left a streaky haze ?

Asked by Brett September 30, 2020
1
Answer

Hi Brett, if the wood signs are to be used and displayed indoors, our Varathane Water-Based Polyurethane is an excellent choice for this project. Water-based polyurethane will appear white in the can, and dries crystal clear. The polyurethane may haze, blush, or streak if applied too heavily, and the best way to prevent this is to apply multiple thin coats, avoiding pooling, drips and runs on the surface. You can lightly sand with 220-320 grit to remove the hazy streaks, then apply an additional thin coat of polyurethane to correct the streaking issues. - Rust-Oleum Product Support 2

Can this be applied with a spray gun

Asked by Kevin June 1, 2020
1
Answer

Hi Kevin, we recommend applying our Varathane Ultimate Water-Based Polyurethane using a good quality, synthetic brush or applicator pad. Spraying may introduce bubbles into the coating, and if attempting to use a spray gun, we recommend following the manufacturer instructions, and testing on a scrap piece first. - Rust-Oleum Product Support 2

I gave this a 4 star rating because the issues I have with this and all water base polyurethanes is the bubbles they leave even when you do your best efforts applying it. But when you get it right it looks awesome and the clean up is easy. You should use a quality brush and don't rake off the excess from your brush back into the can; use a different can and pour it back in when done, because it creates bubble that you pick up on your next dip with the brush. Also if you are careful you can touch the bubbles with a tooth pick or something sharp to pop them, but do wait too long after applying it. Of course this is done only one the last coat because you will sand the previous coat or coats. One last thing, I found it better to apply the coats in a cool environment between 65 - 68 degrees so it drys slower allowing you more time to eliminate bubbles.

This is an okay polyeurathane but I recommend no more than 3 coats! The can says the apply at least three, I did 4. It darkened the stain a little bit (which I ended up not minding) but on the fourth coat, my finish became cloudy. I later read this is probably due to a 'flattening agent' in the satin poly that causes cloudiness with too many coats. Satin finish (low gloss) is my favorite and looks great. This poly goes on easy and dries very fast (within an hour or two) and has very little odor. I sanded about 300 grit in between coats and the finish came out nice and smooth. As far as scratch resistance, I find it still scratches pretty easily. There were a few small scratches after working with it on my clean workbench top.

I don't know who thinks this is a matte, non-reflective surface, but I'm in the painting business and this is a low-gloss satin sheen if I've ever seen one. I needed a flat, matte finish and I get shiny. Not good and wouldn't recommend based solely on that.

That was not the intention! To achieve the right finish, keep in mind that a minimum of 3 coats of Rust-Oleum Varathane Water-based Polyurethane is required. Make sure to also thoroughly mix the can beforehand as well as often during application too. - Rust-Oleum Product Support 5 Rustoleum

The product was suggested by a blogger who had painted her kitchen cabinets with chalk paint and didn't want to use wax for the surface on her cabinets. She loved it and said that it didn't yellow. I have just completed painting my kitchen cabinets with chalk paint and used the product for my final sealer (instead of the wax). It went on smooth - has a soft luster finish similar to using the wax would have been on the cabinets. I have been using the cabinets for about 3 months. Love it. So far it is holding up well in my busy kitchen. I would recommend this product. Only down side is it comes in horribly small containers and it's hard to get a brush that fits in it.

I painted and stenciled my bathroom floor tile. I used this water based polyurethane as a protective coating. I used a flat pad to apply it and 3 coats of polyurethane. It looks beautiful and I still have some left in the first can and haven't used any of the second can.

This product is much too thick. It goes on with really obvious brushstrokes and leaves lines and residue everywhere. 'd spent days giving a door 4 coats of tinted stain and it looked fantastic. I then gave it one clear coat with this product and now it's ruined. Take a look at the before and after photos. I will have to sand and re start. I've done dozens of restorations with many products and this is the worst I've ever used. I cannot understand how the people at Varathane would think this is an acceptable product to sell.

That is not what we like to hear! Our Varathane Water-Based Polyurethane is designed to apply easily using a good quality synthetic bristle brush or applicator pad. A minimum of 4 coats are needed to ensure the expected appearance and performance. Prior to applying the final coat, we recommend lightly sanding the surface with 220 grit sandpaper to ensure an ultra-smooth final finish. - Rust-Oleum Product Support 2 Rustoleum

First time finishing a floor. Chose water-based for quick drying, low odor claims. This product was exactly as claimed. It goes on smooth and easily, not messy to work with, cleans up fast. I applied five coats allowing at least two hours drying time. It dries very quickly but I followed the instructions to be sure. The floor looks great, has a nice shine, and smooth to walk on. I would not hesitate to use this floor finish again, it has been about four weeks and still take notice of the floor when entering the room. Used about 3/4 of one gallon to complete a 12x20 area.

Finally a true crystal clear
I do mosaics and often the pieces are white. I've been burned before by so called crystal clear finishes yellowing up my pieces. I used this on a triple test - white tile, white grout, and gold ceramic. It finished beautifully, no streaks across the gold and the white remained perfectly white. I wish I had taken a shot of it before drying, it looked like I poured milk everywhere, but it dried without a streak and a great glossy finish. Picture attached is after, but it quite honestly looks the same as before, just with a protective finish now. I do agree that it's drippy, but I just run my brush in the center of the piece first so it's not dripping by the time I get to my edges. In any case, that's really not an issue for me.
