LOVE THIS STUFF
I bought this product because i wanted something water based, fast drying and easy to use. This product filled all of those requirements. I used it on a carpetball table i was building. It goes on with a milky look but dries perfectly clear. On a warm, low humidity day it dries really fast. I will probably use this product on most of my projects BECAUSE it is so easy to use and clean up after.

Absolutely superior product. Never yellows, goes on smoothly, and provides a durable, long lasting finish. It’s the only poly top coat I’ll use and I refinish a lot of furniture for my small business. Highly recommend for all the qualities above but also the ease of soap and water clean up.

I have been working on refinishing a family heirloom 100 year old china hutch. After completely stripping the old finishes (paint, stain and varnish), I applied the Varathane Water Based trio of refinishing products which consisted of water based prestain, water based stain and water based polyurethane. 1qt of the prestain and stain were enough, but I needed an extra quart of the clear satin water based interior polyurethane to finish the project. This is the first time using a water based stain and polyurethane and I am not sure I would use water based stain/polyurethane again. Clean up was easy, but I found the water based polyurethane difficult to work with. The water based polyurethane dried so quickly, it was hard to control brush marks. You have to work fast! I was working in the garage and some days were so warm, the polyurethane dried almost as fast as I brushed it on and brushing over the dried polyurethane caused inconsistencies in the finish that needed sanding and never gave me a professional result. The label clearly states temperature ranges, but I applied while definitely too warm. The polyurethane lifted some of the stain and mixed with the polyurethane causing it not to dry clear, but with milky spots. I had to make sure to clean up any areas that had milky residue. Overall the project turned out nicely, but there are certainly many imperfections. If you know what to expect and don't mind a few imperfections, then water based stain and polyurethane are good options for refinishing projects.

Great natural protection
I used this on an oak desk I built and it was the first time I used a water based poly. I brushed the first coat on and it dried to the touch within an hour. I ended up spraying subsequent coats on with an HVLP spray gun with a 1.7 mm tip to save time. I sanded only the desk top between coats and put the entire quart on the desk. It came out phenomenal. This poly does not have the amber tint that oil based polyurethanes do. The wood looks clean and natural.

The project was tedious and challenging but totally worth it. Steps I used are as follows (with lots of drying time in between): sand the tile with 150 grit sandpaper, deep clean, caulk the grout lines to disguise flaws (we had a lot of cracks in grout, 2 coats of Kilz bonding primer, 3 coats of base gray chalk paint, 1 coat of linen white chalk paint, then fine paint detailing to make the edges sharper since some of the paint bleeds through the stencil (I used a clean old makeup brush). I finished up with 3 coats of Rust-Oleum Satin finish polyurethane to protect everything. I used spray glue to try and prevent bleeding by spraying the stencil, then rolling on the white paint. Even though I used gorilla spray glue, I had some bleeding so I used the makeup brushes to clean up the edges. The glue was helpful; when I tried without it, the bleeding was much worse. Toward the end, I cut the Nagoya Tile Stencil to make getting around the nooks and crannies easier. If you have a little space you might want to buy two so you have one to trim down.

This is an okay polyeurathane but I recommend no more than 3 coats! The can says the apply at least three, I did 4. It darkened the stain a little bit (which I ended up not minding) but on the fourth coat, my finish became cloudy. I later read this is probably due to a 'flattening agent' in the satin poly that causes cloudiness with too many coats. Satin finish (low gloss) is my favorite and looks great. This poly goes on easy and dries very fast (within an hour or two) and has very little odor. I sanded about 300 grit in between coats and the finish came out nice and smooth. As far as scratch resistance, I find it still scratches pretty easily. There were a few small scratches after working with it on my clean workbench top.

This particular clear-coats' viscosity is thin enough not to produce 'brush marks' if applied quickly. Its' brother, the 'triple coat', I would definitely NOT recommend if using a brush to apply. It dries quickly and tends to leave brush marks. A soft roller would be a preference in either of the two in application.

The product applied easily and finished nicely. I used a standard brush to apply the coating to stained stair treads. No brush marks remained in the finush when it dried. It applied evenly and leveled nicely. It dried quickly to apply the second coat. I used the satin finish. Looks great

I apply this water based satin finish with a HPLV sprayer and have been very happy with the results. I use it straight out of the can with a large nosel like a 1.7 and crank the pressure to nearly 30 psi. As always, test your settings on cardboard before applying to a project. I like to lay it on kind of heavy so that it levels out on horizontal surfaces like table tops. Vertical surfaces require a lighter touch to avoid sags. The real advantage of water based finish is their reasonably fast drying time. Usually it will flash over in around 45 minutes. This is a big help in reducing little imperfections caused by environmental fallout. Not fast like lacquer, but way better than oil based finish. It doesn't smell nearly as bad as oil products, but don't forget to wear a respirator. Happy spraying!

I like how quickly this product dries, the crystal clear color and I trust Varathane. I kick myself because I didn't research well enough to figure out which applicator to use. I used a foam roller and look at the bubbles! These are recycled wood cabinets, sanded, primed with Kilz high adhesion primer, General Finishes Milk paint, and Varathane... Not thrilled with how bubbly it looks & feels, but it does feel durable. Not too bad for free cabinets, my time, and a few products.

This is the first time I have tried a water based polyurethane. It is slightly thicker than oil based and looks milky out of the can. And thus, application took some getting used to. However, the final result matched well with oil based products. Of course, the advantage is very easy cleanup and low odor.

I love the water-based polyurethane. No horrible odor like the old oil-based stuff, and it doesn't turn things yellow like the oil-based poly tends to do. It goes on really nice with a simple bristle brush. Looks streaky when you first put it on, but the brush marks disappear as it dries. The only thing to watch out for, as with all poly, is drips hanging on your piece - if you don't catch them they will turn into rock-hard dried drips. :) The water-based poly dries really fast too - it says re-coat in an hour but if the weather is warm I've found you don't really need to wait that long. We got five coats on a box we were making in just one day. Three coats is pretty good, but four or five is nice and smooth. We did do a light sanding after the second coat, with 220 grit paper - I think this helped it be super smooth. One thing I really love is the easy clean-up. Just like with latex paint, you clean it up with warm, soapy water, easy peasy.

I was a little skeptical about a water based polyurethane but now I wouldn't go back! Cures HARD and self levels like no finish I ever used before. Using a foam applicator my table top looks like it was professionally sprayed! Of couse clean up is a breeze and fumes aren't an issue. Did it in my kitchen. HIGHLY recommend!

        Surprised!
At first, I was hesitant to use this product, I have always used Deft brushing lacquer. I wanted to try a water based poly mainly because of its low to no odor. This product is excellent! It was easy to use, definitely very low odor compare to oil based poly, and the quality was superb. I put on 7 coats on a oil stained 2x6 boards and it went on smoothly with no bubbles and no brush marks. Highly recommended! The photo attached is only 3 coats, the one board was just freshly brushed that is why is it looks more glossy.

clear natural look and easy to use
i am a layman consumer who applied finishing for the first time. i wanted the minwax brand for $20+ but home depot had only this for $15. this works perfectly as promised. it is easy to apply with a paint brush and easy to clean up with soap and water. it was raining all week but it dried to the touch within 2-3 hours. i applied 4 coats on my poplar desktop and let it cure for 3 days. in terms of looks, i can't tell that this finish is there. the wood looks natural like it was untreated. that's what i wanted! it is invisibly protecting the wood from coffee, moisture, etc. i love the natural look of wood. i don't see any yellowing. i'm very pleased with this and i'm glad that i picked this up and saved some money too.
