Questions & Answers

can I use this on painted doors?

I have wood doors that have been painted many times. I have been able to strip off most of the paint but it's not a perfectly clean wood surface. Can I use this product to stain the door over some remnants of old existing paint? I've seen different things online mentioned a paint/stain combo approach but I am skeptical.

Yes, I used this on a storm door that had been painted dark Green and it worked like a charm! Waited for the coats to dry before applying more to obtain the coverage I wanted.

The can says 'Ideal for VERTICAL surfaces'. I would like to stain some stair treads. How would that hold up with foot traffic?
Asked by: IndplsSteve
It would work just fine for stair treads. Always start from the inside out and the top down...you would have to use a small brush to get into the cracks and where the boards meet but then you can wipe it out evenly over the back and stair treads with a lint free cloth which should be fine. I always seal with a top coat and especially on stair treads. just make sure your seal coat is the same base of the stain...oil to oil, water to water...it says in the how to clean up area...if you use mineral spirits, its oil base. if it says use soap and water...its water base. In your case on stairs that take abuse, I would go with a heavy duty top coat. I think they make a Varathane that is 3X or thicker than the usual which might be worth looking into? I haven't used it but I did read about it. Again, check the base. or simply put several coats of top coat on it.

Is this the same product that comes in a red can?

I can’t remember where I bought the red can but it’s made by the same company. I love the stuff in the red can and am hoping this is the same product as I need more.

Is gel stain good for sealing as well ?.

Is gel stain good for sealing as well ?.
Asked by: Julian
Thank you for reaching out, Julian! Our Rust-Oleum Varathane Dark Walnut Gel Stain is a thicker stain that is ideal for vertical surfaces such as doors and window trim. Once the stain has dried for a minimum of 24 hours, we recommend sealing the surface using our Varathane Ultimate Water-Based Polyurethane if the application is indoors: https://www.homedepot.com/p/Varathane-1-qt-Clear-Satin-Water-Based-Interior-Polyurethane-2-Pack-200241H/202057137 - Rust-Oleum Product Support 2
