Answer This Question

A:  Happy to clear things up, Melissa. Rust-Oleum Varathane Oil-Based Stain and Polyurethane works best on bare wood surfaces to ensure the best color. If applying over an existing polyurethane finish, we recommend applying in a test area first to ensure compatibility. You will also need to sand the finish with #320 grit sandpaper. - Rust-Oleum Product Support 3

Q:Can this be used on three unfinished stairs that would have rubber skid free mats on them?

      Answer This Question

A:  We are here to help, Barbara! Since Rust-Oleum Varathane Oil-Based Stain and Polyurethane is not a floor-grade finish, we do not recommend it for use on stairs. The direct contact with foot traffic will cause the coating to crack and peel. Instead, we recommend staining the surface and then applying a Rust-Oleum Varathane Floor Finish over that for full durability and lasting results. https://www.homedepot.com/p/Varathane-1-gal-Clear-Satin-Oil-Based-Floor-Finish-Polyurethane-130231/100192334 - Rust-Oleum Product Support 3

          This product sucks!
To be fair, I’m a novice so I read the instructions, got quality brushes, watched videos, read blogs, & felt like I did due diligence to learn how to apply it. I used it on 3 stair treads, it was ok but not great. Tried it on a door to match the stair treads. Total failure. This product is so thick. Too thick. it doesn’t apply smoothly/ evenly. Despite telling myself not to do it, I tried it 1 last time on the lid of a hope chest. The crap is now in the trash & ruined a family heirloom.

            Don't do it!
I used this a couple of years ago on a bookcase and although it came out very nice, I remember being frustrated with it Now I remember why! I'm using this on my new fireplace mantle, 2 coats so far and it needs a really good sanding and at least another coat. I like the color, but it's harder to apply than varnish. It's super sticky and sets up so fast it's almost impossible to smooth out. Far too much work and difficult to get a nice finish. Next time I'll just use stain and then varnish.

Probably tastes better than it works.
Ever wonder what it’d be like to stain wood with General Tso’s sauce? Then this product is for you! Like others have commented, this poly + stain is gloppy and thick and splotchy. I took the time to prep my wood, sanded through the grit levels, cleaned with mineral spirits… couldnt ask for a better canvas. Came out terribly. This 2 in 1 product is not worth the time saved to avoid staining and sealing separately. You will die a little on the inside when you see how it ruined your project.

                DO NOT WASTE YOUR MONEY
The stain and poly combo globs up, streaks, dries uneven, separates, runs, the list goes on! It’s not worth your time or money. We are 4 coats in and the color is nothing like it should be. Don’t cut corners. Use the stain and poly separate.

Oh no, not something we like to hear Bobbi. Varathane Premium Poly + Stain can only be applied to properly prepped bare wood. For best results, stir the contents thoroughly before use. Apply using a good quality, natural bristle brush or applicator, brush in the direction of the grain until a uniform film has been achieved. To prevent brush marks, avoid excessive brushing. Additional coats can be applied with one hour dry time between coats. Lightly sand between coats with #320 grit sandpaper. Give us a call at 800-901-0411 so we can hear more about your application and try to make things right.

Product is incredibly tacky and scrapes off with a fingernail. After leaving to dry for an hour before the next coat it was just as nearly tacky as when applied. Left for 3 days to dry and it's STILL tacky. Trying to sand it, a gummy substance just rolls off the top of the wood. Save yourself a headache and just stain your wood and apply a top coat. Waste of money and time.

                    Do not buy
Stain seems to separate from poly. Globs up and bubbles. Stained items for years and this is the worst product I have ever used . Applied lightly but still comes out bad.

Thank you for sharing your experience, John. For the best results, it is essential that Rust-Oleum Varathane Oil-Based Stain and Polyurethane is applied within the recommended temperatures and out of direct sunlight. Warmer temperatures or working in direct sunlight can cause the coating to tack up faster, making it more difficult to apply. - Rust-Oleum Product Support 5 Rustoleum

                      Not very good at all
Terrible. It is like spreading honey. Even on a warm day. So it is impossible to get an even coat so the satin and finish look good. Not good at all. Use traditional oil stain and separate poly coat.
