Q:Will this protect a bathroom ceiling? Will it waterproof it.
by|Nov 19, 2023
1 Answer
Answer This Question

A:  Thank you for reaching out. While Rust-Oleum Varathane Gel Stain can be applied to interior wood, fiberglass and metal, we do not recommend applying to a bathroom ceiling. This product is not considered to be water-resistant and exposure to high levels of humidity and moisture can cause the stain to fade and peel. -Rust-Oleum Product Support 14

Q:I have plano marsh oak steps. What is your recommendation for color poly & stain finish for my stair railings to bring out the steps. I would like to stain & poly to be the same color if possible.

    Answer This Question

A:  Thank you for reaching out. We do not recommend Rust-Oleum Varathane Oil-Based Stain and Polyurethane for use on floors. It is not a floor-grade coating, and it will crack and peel when exposed to direct foot traffic. -Rust-Oleum Product Support 14

Q:Does the pecan color of the stain+poly combo come in a non-poly product? The Golden Pecan isn't quite as deep as this so is not a good alternative for me

Q:Is the stain the same when using stain plus polyurethane together vs just the stain? I tried the stain/polyurethane mix and it came out much lighter than I expected. I?m wondering if I just used the stain would it be better?

        Answer This Question

A:  Thank you for reaching out, James! Rust-Oleum Varathane Oil-Based Stain and Polyurethane is a different formula than our wood stains. That said, you may apply additional coats to build up the finish and achieve a deeper color. Wait one hour dry time between coats and lightly sand between coats with #320 grit sandpaper. -Rust-Oleum Product Support 13

          Amazing product
So sad this is no longer carried in store. To all you out there writing negative comments on this product, know that there is no room for mistakes when using. Surface must be sanded down to bare wood. Tack cloth as well as denatured alcohol applied with lint free cloth to get every piece of dust off. Must do 2-3 coats. Must move quickly when applying. Must wait a full day in between coats and lightly sand in between. After last coat, wait 2-3 days to fully cure before handling.

            Came out ok
I used this on older pine cub boards. Don’t use this in or around a sunny area it definitely puckers and bubbles up. Not sure about the types of brushes either. So after I sanded it down lightly rinsed and did the second coat I did it with a soft rag. It came out so much better. But use gloves. Very sticky stuff. No good for hands.

            This product sucks!
To be fair, I’m a novice so I read the instructions, got quality brushes, watched videos, read blogs, & felt like I did due diligence to learn how to apply it. I used it on 3 stair treads, it was ok but not great. Tried it on a door to match the stair treads. Total failure. This product is so thick. Too thick. it doesn’t apply smoothly/ evenly. Despite telling myself not to do it, I tried it 1 last time on the lid of a hope chest. The crap is now in the trash & ruined a family heirloom.

              Don't do it!
I used this a couple of years ago on a bookcase and although it came out very nice, I remember being frustrated with it Now I remember why! I'm using this on my new fireplace mantle, 2 coats so far and it needs a really good sanding and at least another coat. I like the color, but it's harder to apply than varnish. It's super sticky and sets up so fast it's almost impossible to smooth out. Far too much work and difficult to get a nice finish. Next time I'll just use stain and then varnish.

Probably tastes better than it works.
Ever wonder what it’d be like to stain wood with General Tso’s sauce? Then this product is for you! Like others have commented, this poly + stain is gloppy and thick and splotchy. I took the time to prep my wood, sanded through the grit levels, cleaned with mineral spirits… couldnt ask for a better canvas. Came out terribly. This 2 in 1 product is not worth the time saved to avoid staining and sealing separately. You will die a little on the inside when you see how it ruined your project.

Easy to use and looks good.
Goes on smooth and leaves just enough grain showing. Used this for trim in my wife’s office it looks good.

                  DO NOT WASTE YOUR MONEY
The stain and poly combo globs up, streaks, dries uneven, separates, runs, the list goes on! It’s not worth your time or money. We are 4 coats in and the color is nothing like it should be. Don’t cut corners. Use the stain and poly separate.

Oh no, not something we like to hear Bobbi. Varathane Premium Poly + Stain can only be applied to properly prepped bare wood. For best results, stir the contents thoroughly before use. Apply using a good quality, natural bristle brush or applicator, brush in the direction of the grain until a uniform film has been achieved. To prevent brush marks, avoid excessive brushing. Additional coats can be applied with one hour dry time between coats. Lightly sand between coats with #320 grit sandpaper. Give us a call at 800-901-0411 so we can hear more about your application and try to make things right.
