i don't see a minimum temprature to use this product - like between 60 and 80 degrees - anything lower is too chilly for a good result . . .
Asked by: marion
We needed to get the project done because it was a gift for my mother. So we used it when it was in the 30s outside. We were in our screened in porche. It was so cold. I was worried about the cold temperature but we had no problems. Other than the stain not getting as dark as we wanted but it could’ve been the wood we used.

I previously used this product on a floor and loved the results, though in a spare room and i have to be careful not to scratch. I am staining our bedroom floor and decided to use the kona for floors, but it didnt come out as nice. Can I put a polyurethane finish for floors over this product to make it more durable? Thank you
Asked by: TC
Yes, i have used clear poly over this product with great results. For best results sand it lightly before application of the clear poly.

Will this work on laminate flooring?

If not, what would you suggest?
Asked by: Joe
Happy to help, Joe! Rust-Oleum Varathane Stain and Polyurethane is not recommended for application to a floor. Laminate flooring can be also difficult to refinish as the veneer over the pressed wood is not thick enough to properly prepare through sanding. We'd like to hear a little more about your project and try to help. Please call our Product Support team at (888) 577- 8459. - Rust-Oleum Product Support 4

can I use this on may old stained and varnished railes?

Asked by: Irina
Thank you for reaching out. Irina. Rust-Oleum Varathane Stain + Poly can be applied to railings, but you will need to remove the previous finish first by stripping or sanding so this product can penetrate and dry properly. - Rust-Oleum Product Support 5

Actually purchased the Ebony color, but I couldn't find that product to review. I think this is a great product. I painted a brand new door with absolutely no issues or problems. The first coat went on beautifully, but I opted for a second coat just to make sure I was happy with the variations in the wood grain and knots. I did not have any drips or blotching. I made sure to follow the instructions and mixed the product well before starting, as I suspect the majority of complaints related to blotching are the result of poor mixture (just from reading other reviews of this product in whichever color). I used three coats on the exterior side of the door (2nd coat after about an hour with the third coat after 24 hours), but I'm not sure that was necessary - I just wanted to avoid bleaching in the future as much as possible. Great coverage. Soap and water clean up. No major fumes. Quick drying.

My wife has a problem with furniture.  She recently informed me that she would be purchasing a wine rack and paying an additional 100$ to have it stained.  I probably earned myself some negative points by the look I gave her.  It was disbelief coupled with disapproval, but to be fair, I was sort of surprised that she would spend that kind of money for something that we could do ourselves.  After a brief conversation I realized that the reason she was willing to spend the money is because she wanted to have the rack "look old."  Now that I could work with and after convincing her that I could complete the task and save us money, she agreed to let me give it a shot--with the added warning that if I messed it up she was going to be quite angry.  Thanks to this stain from Varathane, she is not angry with me.  A deliberately uneven coat is all it took to make the pine rack appear weathered.  It really came out fantastic, the stain was easy to work with and soaked quite well into the wood.  It did not have a noticeable odor and applied evenly.  I left it to dry overnight; however, I actually think it was ready to be pieced back together in a few hours.  The finish is exceptional and the blend of stain+poly in one product was a real timesaver.  I definitely don't need an additional protectant surface coat, so it was a once and done application. I like the color, I like the price, and I loved the product.  I would definitely use it again.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Stain and urethane? Clean and wax? Nope. Pick one!! This product, in my opinion, reaffirms what people keep telling me about "2 in 1" products: Pick one. Are you staining? Are you urethaning/varnishing? Same as a "clean and wax" product. Choose. I picked this up to see if the technology had changed in the 15 years since I last tried a 2-in-1. No luck. Stain quality was terrible, urethane quality mediocre. Either do it it in 2 steps, or don't do it.

It does leave a decent finish if you take your time and are very careful. I used it to darken some chairs that I had stained a dark walnut color, but brushing as per directions was hard to keep even and streak free. I ended up rubbing several coats on with a cloth. I am pretty experienced at finishing and I would recommend most people would be better off applying stain and poly separately.
