Questions & Answers

Would this darken pine wine boxes to make them aged?

Asked by: Rob
No, this is a clear matte finish. If you put a little water on a rag and rub it on your piece it will show what this finish will look like. You need to stain wood to darken it/ make it look aged. Then use finish to seal and protect it.

Can this be used as a protective coat over chalk painted items? I did a side

Asked by: Nita
Yes!! This is the only topcoat I use for my chalk painted projects. It's less work than wax, doesn't have to be reapplied, feels almost as soft as wax, doesn't yellow over white/light colors (if applied thinly & not allowed to pool or drip) and is very durable after 2-3 light coats then fully cured. You can use it gently once dry but after the 30 day full cure time, this stuff is very strong/durable. I've used it on high- use tables and my bathroom vanity and once cured have had no problems with chipping, scratching or wear. You will love how this feels and looks! The matte sheen is matte with a soft glow like you achieve after buffing wax lightly.

Varathane 1 qt. Matte Soft Touch Polyurethane (2-Pack) is rated 4.4 out of 5 by 93.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Easy clean up I use Varathane polyurethane to prolong high wear painted areas that I want to stay clean like bannisters. Got this product for a stairwell repainting project. After painting the stairs this poly was perfect for coating handrails and newels where hands rub off the paint. Also, have used poly on front doors to keep them clean looking longer. This product dries matte which is nice from others and is low sheen. The product goes on easily and gives a nice even coat without much effort. A tip is to rest the can in a hot water bath to keep it warm which makes it spread easier and minimizes brush marks. It dried in a couple of hours and applied several coats. I then cleaned up with just soap and water. The product is water based, first time using this version and I liked this aspect from other cans of poly I've used over the years. Since, I've gone over to Latex whenever possible, I like that I now have a polyurethane that can be easily cleaned up when done.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from This found a permanent place in my finishing arsenal I am an expert wood finisher and have written many blogs on the subject. In my spare time I make furniture and other wood items. I have about 25 different types of finishes at my disposal because there really is no one-size-fits-all wood finish. Waterborne finishes have been growing in popularity lately and the professional grade stuff (post catalyzed polyurethanes and water white Lacquers) are on par with their solvent based brethren. The consumer level stuff however, still has flaws I do not like. This product is more pro grade. One thing I am not at all a fan of with waterborne finishes is the color tone. An easy comparison would be comparing a full spectrum photo grade lightbulb to an LED. the LED light is white to the point of being blue. Most consumer level waterborne finishes suffer from this too. There is a notable bluish tinge. This product did not do that. In addition getting a high quality Matte finish out of a can is difficult. There is always some level of gloss that needs to be knocked back; or there is a noticeable film built that refracts light in the corners letting you know it's there. Again this did not do either. I did use 4 coats to provide the desired protection so there was a considerable build, but not a noticeable one. This product did not alter the woods appearance any more than water would. It looks completely natural and untreated although the wood is sufficiently protected. Now before you run out and replace all your oil based finishes, there are a few things you should know. I see a lot of waterborne finishes getting negative reviews for what I am about to mention - but this is the nature of the product. 1. This will raise the grain upon initial application. The can says sanding between coats isn't required; but it is at least until the wood is sealed off 2. you HAVE to use a high quality synthetic bristle brush. A cheap brush or a foam brush will not do well. This finish dries fast and will actually dry on your brush if you do not use one that is capable of proper flow control. You will be dragging dried finish around your piece creating runs and sags. 3. This will not highlight or accentuate figured species. This will leave the wood grain fairly flat and natural looking. That is the goal of this finish. If you have figured wood or you want a rich tone, either use an oil based finish, an oil modified waterborne acrylic, or apply a washcoat of dewaxed blonde or amber shellac before applying this finish. In the attached picture you can see the difference this finish makes. This is a piece of walnut sanded to 220 grit. One side is finished with a natural Danish oil - which also is very Matte in appearance. The other is finished with this. As you can see the Varathane side looks like there was never anything applied. Also the tactile feel of this finish is amazing. Nothing plasticy about it. If you are into the natural look, this is your stuff.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent Product The product performs as advertised. Easy to apply. I just use a good quality brush - no brush marks; and with its fast drying characteristics, minimum "dust nibs". I lightly sand with 320 grit or higher before applying the final coat. Hard, protective finish, and velvety to the touch without any extra work. I prefer the matte for a great "look". I have used it on Spanish cedar doors and trim, and on a cherry hardwood vanity. I have experimented with many types of finishes, without going to the extreme of a professional finishing shop, and this is my favorite by far. My only complaint is that it can be hard to find, so Home Depot saved the day!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Perfect Topcoat Varathane polyurethane is the perfect final step in topcoating and protecting. I used it on a wood medicine cabinet that was beginning to show deterioration with a lot of dry spots on the finish. After two coats, the appearance is dramatically improved and it looks so much better conditioned. It works really well at protecting other indoor projects including faux finishing, stenciling and decoupaging. Several of my decoupage projects were finished with Varathane's matte sheen polyurethane and I loved how it protects without taking away from the antiquing effect of the faux finishes. It's water based formula makes super easy clean up.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good Product. I bought this product to coat a chalk painted surface. It has been applied for several months on a bench that is used several times a week by children. The finish has held up VERY well. It was easy to apply, the fumes were minimum. It seems to be the best product for my particular application needs, however it is difficult to apply without brush marks, though they are minimal. Also, it says it is a matte finish - it is more of an eggshell to satin finish. I don't know if there is a "more matte" polyurethane product out there, but this is not totally matte.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Disenchanted After reading reviews on different poly products to finish the surface of a stained butcher block, I settled on this one. Seemed like it would be exactly what we were looking for. I read the directions carefully as I wanted to make sure I applied the product with all the recommendations of the manufacturer. I applied three coats, waiting adequate time between and let it "cure" for the week as specified. We kept the surface free of EVERYTHING. After that time, we set down a couple of items, but to err on the side of caution put coasters etc. under each object. After one week, of no one deliberately setting anything down on it, a scratch appeared literally out of thin air. So I went to a blind corner and tried to gently scratch the surface with my nail, sure enough, the surface marred immediately without much effort at all. UGH! I don't understand how this could happen. I stirred the can, the weather was perfect, I sanded, I waited and yet the finish is a disaster! It certainly gave us the look we wanted and it was spectacular, but if you can't use it, what's the point? I'm beside myself. I think this would be fine for something that is not subject to wear, like a frame that you don't touch, but for anything that will be a high traffic area FORGET IT!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Best Matte Ever! This matte polyurethane was truly a matte finish. I even put it over a satin finish which really looked like gloss, and it completely changed it to matte. I have had other polyurethane that said matte finish, but when it dried it was way to shiny. I finish old primitive furniture and you want a matte finish when you are done. This was exactly what I wanted. I highly recommend this product. Larry

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Best water based varnish I have used I have used all sorts of varnishes (polyurethanes) including oil based and water based. Up to now I had preferred oil based since they covered the wood much better and were simpler to apply. Other water based varnishes took so many coats to cover effectively, I preferred not to use them and would use oil. I used this on some oak plywood in window wells in our house, and it covered as good if not better than the oil based ones I had always preferred. Also it dried (due to the fact it was water based) very quickly, and our cat could jump onto the wood about 2 hours after I did the job. Oil based would have taken at least a full day to be "animal proof".. I highly recommend this brand for any fine wood project.
