I am a model railroader and looking for a product that I can use on plastic. Will this product adhere to plastic? I am looking for a product that will not yellow over time and trying to avoid a shinny, gloss finish. Can you use a dull coat acrylic on top of this product?
Asked by: Rusty

1 qt. Matte Soft Touch Polyurethane is rated 4.0 out of 5 by 23.
Rated 1 out of 5 by from scratches off easily with a fingernail I am not sure why it's happening, but this polyurethane scratches off WAY too easily. I spent several hours over the course of several weeks applying multiple coats to a set of 3 tables that we had purchased unfinished. My husband tossed his keys and some mail on the top of the sofa table like 4 or 5 days after the 3rd coat had dried and there were very noticeable scratches. I sanded between coats with 0000 steel wool, and waited 10+ hours between applications. I had used the Varathane Kona color dark wood stain beforehand- I suppose the dark stain underneath isn't helping matters, and making scratches more visible. I can't express how frustrated I am that this stuff is scratching off so easily- just using my fingernail with light pressure, the stuff is scratching off easily. Not sure if I did something wrong but all I know is that it looks like I'm going to be starting over.. I am hoping that I can just lightly sand and then apply a different polyurethane on top...

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A True MATTE Finish Went on great & quick dry meant I put down 5 coats on kitchen surfaces in no time. The real test will be how many years it lasts I used another brand 7 years ago [on Ikea beech 'butcher block' 1" material] which gave out in 2 'heavy-use' areas, esp where we use a bamboo cutting board about every other day. Also I did note the old "Matte" [also water base] dried a noticeable bit more shiny than this product which, from my Army darkroom photo printing work, is what I consider a true Matte finish. A last point: it was recommended I use 220 grit sandpaper between coats but, while I'm glad I started with that grade, I felt much more comfortable with 320 between all subsequent coats.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great product, great low sheen finish, easy to use, don't use sand paper, steel wool instead. This product was awesome, I made an end table and wanted it to look like the natural wood but needed to protect it, I didn't want a glossy sheen at all. This product, while not being as flat as regular wood, is the lowest sheen poly I have ever used. It goes on fantastic, dries fast, and no smell. However, I do have a few tips. 1. Since it is a water based product it will lift the grain slightly so to get an ultra smooth finish you will need to "sand" it after the first application or so, BUT DON'T USE SAND PAPER, it will go right through the finish. Use a fine steel wool to scuff up the finish, clean up, and lay on the next coat. I waited 6 hours between coats so I could use the steel wool. 2. Thin coats, I used a thicker first coat to seal the wood and then knocked that down with the steel wool, but the subsequent coats were thin and it evened out beautifully. This also helps prevent runs. 3. It dries fast, get it laid down quickly and try not to go over it again, since it dries so fast it will leave brush marks. 4. The last 2 coats forgo the steel wool and put on as can directs, 2 hours between, allow it to build slightly up to get an ultra smooth finish. The jury is out on the durability, it says fully cured in 7 days so I don't plan on using the table until then so we will see. If it holds up well, I will be refinishing my new kitchen table, lol.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from pretty matte finish I used this on some bamboo plywood for a countertop. I wanted water-based because anything oil-based darkens the color slightly and I wanted it to stay as blonde as possible. This brought out the beauty of the bamboo like other clear coats would but kept the blonde color. The first coat or 2 wasn't even because some was being absorbed. I put 4 coats on with light sanding in between. It almost looked like there was nothing on it - completely matte, no shine, and very pretty. It didn't show the brush strokes like many water-based products do.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Completely matte finish and easy to apply Completely matte finish and so much easier to work with than traditional oil-based polyurethane. It is milky when wet which allows you to see where you have already applied. It dries relatively quickly but still allows you enough time to get it even. With oil based polys I always feel like I have to rush as to not brush through half dried sections, leaving streaks. No visible streaking or brush marks at all. I used this on a table and chairs with a dark stain. Three coats total. Two coats done In the afternoon with about 4 hours drying time inbetween and then a third the following morning. I didn't sand between any of the coats. I will use this on all my future projects.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Beautiful finish! This product was fool proof. I have never used any poly before and all I did was read the back and do exactly what it said. I will never use another product when finishing my DIY projects. And one last note...it easily cleaned off the brush with WATER. Fast and easy!

Rated 1 out of 5 by from I got this product to top coat a countertop stained with cured for 24hrs Varathane Antique White ... I got this product to top coat a countertop stained with cured for 24hrs Varathane Antique White oil stain. Stain had no smell and was not tacky before I coated. This polyurethane is very soft and offers no protection. It would be good for something that sees no real world use, like a picture frame maybe, or decorative furniture. Every single impact or scratch is visible. I am able to scratch it with my nails. More so, I am able to completely scratch and chip off the coating with a little effort. Water does not bead on it. Water turns the coating milky white, it goes back to clear after wiping. I stirred it. I put 5 coats. Sanded in between. Second coat 2 hours after first, following coats 24 hours after each other. I used a good brush for thin coats. It looks good and applies easily, but offers no protection at all. Just like clear candle wax. I had to sand it down and start from scratch.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Causes a satin sheen on polymer clay I have been searching for a perfectly flat matte polyurethane clear coat for polymer clay jewelry that has been touched up with acrylic paint. While this product does dry fast, clear and even, it does still look more like a mix of egg shell and satin in that it still has a undesirable sheen to it. I mixed well for about 2 minutes, scraping the bottom and bringing the flatteners to the top while avoiding creating bubbles. I imagine this product would work beautifully for other projects where high gloss is not desired, but for those seeking a true flat matte finish for polymer clay, this is not the product. My search continues.
