Questions & Answers

Any issues with yellowing?

Asked by: MEL
Despite what Rustoleum responds with in this post, i can guarantee you that in fact yellow / amber tone is created by using this product. There is notice of it on lighter colour stains/paints, you may not notice it with a dark coloured stain/pant, but it is definitely noticeable on the staircase i did, causing us to sand everything down and re-do the project. very dissapointed. I called Rustoleum for possible solutions and answers but all they say is that is doesnt leave an amber/yellow hue. I think its very difficult to apply this in 'one thick coat' as the instructions state without creating that discolouration. So dissapointed and left to re-do 24 steps. This means removing the railing and pickets and re-sanding everything down. Stay away, take the time and repeat multiple coats with a regular eurathane.

Can this be used on hardwood flooring?

Asked by: Mike
I suppose you could try but I think you will be very unhappy with the results. It does not self level and flashes over too quickly to get a smooth finish.

Answers say this is crystal clear. Description saProduct has a slight amber effect, if applying over light. which is it?

Asked by: Justin
Hi Justin, thank you for reaching out! Our Varathane Triple Thick Polyurethane is a water-based coating, that dries to a crystal clear finish; without the amber hue found in oil-based polyurethanes. Thank you for bringing this discrepancy to our attention, we appreciate the feedback! - Rust-Oleum Product Support 2

Can this product be sprayed ?

Asked by: Yi
Great question! To ensure a smooth finish with Rust-Oleum Varathane Triple Thick Polyurethane, we recommend applying with a high-quality synthetic bristle brush. Application with a brush helps ensure the proper film thickness and the best protection. - Rust-Oleum Product Support 3

1 qt. Semi-Gloss Triple Thick Polyurethane (2-Pack) is rated 3.4 out of 5 by 212.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Love it ! Project was repurposing some old wood into benches and wanted some good protection from wet bathing suits or spilled drinks. I used a Purdy 2 inch brush and had no trouble with brush strokes, cloudiness or being too thick. The self leveling worked like a charm. I was originally worried about the leveling due to the thickness, but had no trouble at all. Used 2 coats of a homemade black walnut water based stain with sanding before during and after each application and had no cloudiness or any kind or trouble with the Triple Thick going on smooth and drying clear. Was worried that the triple thickness would increase probability of chipping, but it does not appear to be too brittle or overly thick. Used product outside in semi protected area. Weather consisted of occasional cloud cover, very slight breeze and 82 degrees. Had never used this poly before but will definitely use it again.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Milky haze remains and not durable at all. Apply 1 thin layer only. If you apply too heavily (instructions say to apply as 1 heavy gloss coat), or multiple coats of semi-gloss, you WILL have a milky haze especially in grooves and contours. Great for rapid finish of small low value items. Avoid this product at all costs with anything of value. Also, to the webpage person, please stop placing the cursor at the end of the paragraph when a person double spaces after a period. Normal convention is double space. Is common sense a thing of the past?

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Fast coverage for relatively small areas This polyurethane goes on thick, about as thick as light syrup. I was skeptical about the results so I tested it on a small piece of scrap mahogany. The results were somewhat impressive. The surface was pretty smooth but still left some grain showing. Not enough to warrant another coat though, unless you want a mirror surface. I used an ordinary cheap (49 cent) brush to give it a real test. At first, the coat looked very streaked, translucent, and unacceptable. I gave up trying to improve it and left it to dry. The next day, I found the streaks to be gone and the scrap looked just fine and clear. There were some brush marks still visible at an angle and I think it might not work so well on larger areas because of the fast drying time. I honestly has not noticed that it was a water-based product; so when I read the cleanup instructions, I was surprised. So much the better. In short, this is for people (like me ) who are too impatient to "do it right" and just want an acceptable job in minimum time and effort.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from good stuff This poly is noticeably thicker than the usual stuff, so you can build up a thick layer more quickly. I used it with a brush on the project below. I can't confirm the "self-leveling" claims, the brush marks are pretty clear, but I intend to sand and polish them out. It drips just the same as anything - there's no free lunch. What I really wanted was to make a thick layer fast, so that when I start wet-sanding, I don't go through anywhere. For that, this product was excellent. I used maybe 8 coats, applying then next coat as soon as the prior one was tacky, so that they all bond into a single layer. After two days, it is still pretty soft, I'll give it a month to harden completely. I've done this with brush-on poly before, and the end result is a tough, glass-like finish. I also used the product on the stand, just to lock in the splinters. Just a slight smell as it dries, no fumes, so you can use it anywhere, any time. Clean-up couldn't be easier - just warm water for both brush and hands. So much easier than the old days of oil based finishes.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Absolutely the best This is absolutely the best water clean up polyurethane I have ever used. I used this triple thick Varathane polyurethane on a medium grade particle board and everybody knows what any liquid does to particle board. I did a section with a very well known brand of polycrylic. I did 2 coats and had to heavily sand between each coat and it needed another coat. The rest of my bench I used Varithane Triple Thick and could have gotten away with only one coat. It raised a little but would have been acceptable but I sanded and applied a 2nd coat. It produced a fantastic finish for particle board. Fairly smooth & it truly does self level with virtually no brush streaks. Two coats used much less product than 2 coats of the 'other' brand. It went on smooth and worked easily and cleanup was a snap. Soap & water. Make sure you DO NOT SHAKE can to mix but gently stir and bring up from the bottom. I will use this on all my furniture refinishing from now on.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from I've been trying to find a hard, reasonably scratch resistant top coat for some table tops I'm ma... I've been trying to find a hard, reasonably scratch resistant top coat for some table tops I'm making. I sampled many types on a piece of black walnut (including Min-Wax's Polycrylic, Min-Wax's Wipe-on Poly, and General Finish). I followed directions to a "T" for each, and applied multiple coats of each with the proper brush, drying time and light sanding with 220 grit. Then, using my fingernail, I scratched all samples, and found that Triple-thick was the LEAST scratch resistant, and my thumb nail actually dug into the layer (yes, it had 48 hrs dry-time between applications). It also showed the most brush strokes and bumps (even after light 220 sanding). Polycrylic also scratched visibly, but not as badly. I found that General Finish (5 coats) and the Poly-Wipe-on (7 coats) were the most scratch resistant. If anyone has found a better finish, please advise.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Does not lay flat Upon opening this can of Triple Thick Polyurethane from Varathane, I stirred it per the instructions on the can. What I found amusing is that I was able to stand the stir stick vertical all by itself. That is how thick this polyurethane is. The project I used it on was new toe kick boards on my kitchen cabinets. The label instructions suggest you use a decent nylon brush, so I purchased and used one of the better ones available at Home Depot. What I ran into, though the polyurethane spread nicely, I could not get the brush strokes to disappear, regardless of whatever I tried. The boards were laying horizontal on the kitchen table with the house thermostat at 72 degrees. Having extensive experience with polyurethane, I tried using a China brush. Same results. I did not attempt a sanding and reapplication. So in summary, I wasn't impressed with a product I had high hopes for. If you are looking for a polyurethane product to use on a high traffic project, don't wish to take the time to sand and apply a second coat, this may be something to consider.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Works great. How to use. This product does not dry too fast as other have claimed. Also it does not leave bubbles if you apply it correctly. Use a high quality synthetic paint brush always to avoid bubbles. Do not apply to entire section at once. Apply a THICK coat to one section and it doesn’t have to be perfect. It will look thick and white. Then go over that same coat with the brush again lightly in a angled straight pass to smooth it out. So if you applied a straight line from left to right then go over it the second time from left to right. The second pass is just for smoothing not for applying product. It will self level, there will be no bubbles when it dries and it will look great. I have done this many times.
