Questions & Answers

Any issues with yellowing?

Asked by: Mel
Despite what Rustoleum responds with in this post, i can guarantee you that in fact yellow / amber tone is created by using this product. There is notice of it on lighter colour stains/paints, you may not notice it with a dark coloured stain/pant, but it is definitely noticeable on the staircase i did, causing us to sand everything down and re-do the project. very dissapointed. I called Rustoleum for possible solutions and answers but all they say is that is doesnt leave an amber/yellow hue. I think its very difficult to apply this in 'one thick coat' as the instructions state without creating that discolouration. So dissapointed and left to re-do 24 steps. This means removing the railing and pickets and re-sanding everything down. Stay away, take the time and repeat multiple coats with a regular eurathane.

Can this be used on hardwood flooring?

Asked by: Mike
I suppose you could try but I think you will be very unhappy with the results. It does not self level and flashes over too quickly to get a smooth finish.

Answers say this is crystal clear. Description saProduct has a slight amber effect, if applying over light. which is it?

Asked by: Justin
Hi Justin, thank you for reaching out! Our Varathane Triple Thick Polyurethane is a water-based coating, that dries to a crystal clear finish; without the amber hue found in oil-based polyurethanes. Thank you for bringing this discrepancy to our attention, we appreciate the feedback! - Rust-Oleum Product Support 2

Can this product be sprayed ?

Asked by: Yi
Great question! To ensure a smooth finish with Rust-Oleum Varathane Triple Thick Polyurethane, we recommend applying with a high-quality synthetic bristle brush. Application with a brush helps ensure the proper film thickness and the best protection. - Rust-Oleum Product Support 3

1 qt. Semi-Gloss Triple Thick Polyurethane (2-Pack) is rated 3.4 out of 5 by 214.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Works great. How to use. This product does not dry too fast as other have claimed. Also it does not leave bubbles if you apply it correctly. Use a high quality synthetic paint brush always to avoid bubbles. Do not apply to entire section at once. Apply a THICK coat to one section and it doesn’t have to be perfect. It will look thick and white. Then go over that same coat with the brush again lightly in a angled straight pass to smooth it out. So if you applied a straight line from left to right then go over it the second time from left to right. The second pass is just for smoothing not for applying product. It will self level, there will be no bubbles when it dries and it will look great. I have done this many times.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Worst Purchase Ever!! I purchased the varathane oil base stain which works really well. I thought I would try the triple thick water base poly but I should have known... There are very few water base products that work well for staining or clear coating. That should have been my first clue. The second was the "triple thick" This stuff was like spreading elmers glue around. It dries so fast and leaves all the thick brush marks with it. I am now attempting tomorrow, after i had to sand off the clear coat and restain, to apply the varathane oil base interior poly urethane. I will write a review on that when it is complete.

I have used this product in the past and continue to be very satisfied with the end result. Like any finish, the proper application of this product is key. It is thick, sets up quickly and is a real time saver when you are finishing large areas or multiple surfaces. However, you must move along fairly quickly, not overworking the product but ensuring an even application over the surface and not allowing the adjoining edges to dry as you apply your product. It goes on thick and milky, but proper application should greatly reduce the milkiness or you are putting it on too thick. I used a high quality brush designed for water based clear finishes. Good luck!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from It's different, but it works To preface, I am a woodworker with a special place in my heart for finishing. Applying finishes is by far my favorite part of any project and I have used everything from post cat vinyl lacquers to French Polishing the way Andre Roubo in L'Art du Menuisier. I haven't finished a project yet with this polyurethane, but did apply it to some scrap boards I prepped. Based on others reviews, I see people struggling with this finish. It's completely possible to get excellent results. In the piece pictured, I chose American Cherry. It's a notoriously difficult species to finish as it tends to blotch badly. I am very pleased with the final finish. This is a waterborne product, however it imparted a slightly richer tone than the usual "flatness" a waterborne finish leaves. It seems very similar to an oil modified waterborne such as General Finishes High Performance. The satin sheen is right where I would expect it to be, and one coat did the trick. There is definitely a film, but polyurethane is a film building finish. I did not find it overly thick and akin to 3 to 4 coats of my usual waterborne acrylic. I did pick up some tips along the way that may assist anyone having trouble with this finish: Don't use foam. Whether that be a foam brush or foam rollers. It just doesn't work and is a set up for failure. Use a good quality synthetic bristle brush, and wet the brush first with water. I like to soak the brush, shake it out thoroughly, and let it sit for 15 minutes before applying the finish. It keeps the thick poly flowing off the tips instead of loading in the center of the brush Load the brush and go heavier than you think you should, The natural inclination with finish is to go as light as possible because the subsequent coats will fill in dry spots. Treat this like a heavy latex paint. Trust the finish and don't over work it. The can says it self levels really well. I found this to be true. On my first board I went crazy tipping it and trying to remove brush strokes. Mistake. The second time, I worked fast and left them. The finish did level well Finish your finish! As with any wood finish, the best results are not achieved off the brush or off the gun. This is no exception. After a 4 day cure time, I rubbed out the finish with #0000 steel wool and fine furniture paste wax. This will remove any brush strokes or runs, and completely even out the sheen. Overall I am very happy with this product and would definitely recommend it. I can't give any insight into long term protection yet, but the thick one coat film is sufficient for high use items like dining room tables and coffee tables. I will be using this a lot when I need a super fast finish that is more protective than shellac.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Leaves a thick coat but takes some practice to get right I have been using water based polyurethane for a while and thought this might speed up project completion. I found with some practice you need to put on a fairly thick coat quickly to avoid brush marks and disturbing the finish as it begins to skin over. I usually apply normal water based Polyurethane with a pad or rag to get a smooth coat but had terrible luck with this, follow the directions and get a quality brush for best results. Since the material has a paste like consistency if the coat is not thick enough it will not smooth out the brush strokes, the additional material also gives you a few more moments to ensure good coverage. Work small areas at a time and don't go back to retouch. For high end furniture I probably won't use this since it harder to get a glass smooth finish but for normal use and kids room stuff it speeds up my day. My next plan us to use this as a base coat, sand smooth and top coat with regular water based poly.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Milky haze remains and not durable at all. Apply 1 thin layer only. If you apply too heavily (instructions say to apply as 1 heavy gloss coat), or multiple coats of semi-gloss, you WILL have a milky haze especially in grooves and contours. Great for rapid finish of small low value items. Avoid this product at all costs with anything of value. Also, to the webpage person, please stop placing the cursor at the end of the paragraph when a person double spaces after a period. Normal convention is double space. Is common sense a thing of the past?

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Bah Humbug! Bought this at my local HD and used it without looking at reviews first. Too bad for me:( "Self-leveling" must be a relative concept - this stuff would self level just fine for driveway repairs, but for a furniture piece with many hours of work it is totally unsatisfactory. (see other 1 star comments) I will say that the finish is very durable. It took hours to sand it down to a mostly flat surface again. By the way, all recommended application instructions on the can were carefully followed. Since i couldn't fully remove this stuff without damaging the delicate veneer on part of the project, i sanded the best i could then recoated with the regular thickness version of this finish. Not happy with the residual wavy brush mark lines that could not be fully sanded out without risking damage. Suggest you reserve this stuff for finishing driftwood craft projects for grade school kids (and the aforementioned driveway crack repairs).

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Cloudy mess There is a reason water-based poly is not normally this thick. The surface dries quickly and traps the moisture underneath, leaving cloudy spots. My project is ruined.

I'm not sure it truly replaces 3 full coats of regular poly though. Of course our project was not the best test given it involved kitchen cabinets with a 20 year old finish. The color was richer and deeper just by applying this poly and the cabinets now shine nicely. All in all a very good product. Note: our store only sells individual cans, not the case of 2.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Too thick and keeps brush marks Oh I wish I'd used the regular oil based polyurethene on my antique furniture refinishing!! I followed advice of a self proclaimed expert. This product was thick and did not level after application as the can advertised. Brush marks are dried into the finish. It ruined the hard work of stripping and staining done before putting on a top coat. I used a new high quality brush as directed. I've used regular oil based polyurethane in the past on similar projects with excellent results. Even if it took two coats, the oil based product worked. Maybe I missed something or got a bad can, but you've been warned.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Too THICK! This stuff really is triple thick! It was so thick that it left areas of higher gloss, dried quickly, left brush marks and small bubbles too. Not recommended.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Brush strokes I followed the suggestions by the following reviewer. After wetting the brush and trying to leave a heavy coat undisturbed, I still had trouble with brush strokes. I have used minwax oil and water based polyurethanes before and never had problems like this before. I'm glad I tested this on the bottom of the shelves of my cabinets. I am really questioning the credibility of the Rustoleum company because this isn't the first product that they have that hasn't stood up to it's high and sometimes impossible claims.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from HORRIBLE STUFF!!! I live in the desert, it's not raining, and it's not humid. The temperature is 68 degrees. Used this on a small, painted table top. It went on like thick elmers glue, left thick streaks and you get just seconds before it starts to clump and form a gooey mess. I sanded it down, and tried again with the best brush I could find, SAME thing. Went on uneven, like elmers glue. I worked really fast so there are no visible gobs. If I have to sand this down again, I'm going to demand my money back!

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Too thick Used this due to good reviews online. Previously on a different furniture project I used the Miniwax Polyurethane and liked it but was trying to save some time but having to do less coats. This totally ruined my nice smooth finish I had from the rustoleum ultra cover paint which was great. It dried cloudy in spots and I ended up having to sand and repaint. Will not ever buy again...even applied w/a Purdy brush and still had issues with it.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Triple Thick needed triple coats! This product was difficult to apply and did not live up to it's claim of single coat. My project is oak stair tred's that are stained with Varathane ultimate wood stain. I liked the fact that it goes on milky as it made it easier to see where I needed more poly. The self leveling did work as long as I didn't put it on to thick which was difficult because it is thick and dries fast! The product died to quick for me to get an even coat and finish off with the feathering/ tipping often leaving sections with out a coat. This is why I had to do three coats. I tried many techniques to fix this problem but in the end sanding and re -coating worked best. My final finish still had small bubbles which felt like grit when I ran my hand over the stair. I ended up giving a very light sand to get the smooth finish but it made it more of a satin finish instead of the semi gloss i purchased. I know it is not ideal to sand a final coat but I did not want to apply another coat! This product may work best for small projects like craft items. On the up side I highly recommend the Utlimate Wood Stain,

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Worth Learning How to Use 3X Look folks, I almost didn't buy this based on some of the lousy reviews but I took a chance anyway. In this world of instant everything we forget that we are the "artists". I wasn't looking for a "canned" look. I bought this product thinking you can start thick and go thin, but you cannot start thin and go thicker. I tried it straight out if the can in one area, and it is a little too thick, but why should that be a problem on a water-based product? Got water? In a separate container I poured some of the 3x and added an ounce or two of water and stirred. VOILA! I now have 2X, and for a final coat I mixed up some 1X, and let me tell you the results are stunning and just as smooth or better than any other water-based Urethane out there.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Triple Thick Gloss Was hoping that this poly would save some time and it has that potential if you are doing a small to medium project. My project was less area than a sheet of plywood. I had a difficult time overlapping small areas which is the recommended method if a larger area is being coated. It dries so fast that if you go over an area or edge that is not sufficiently still wet, it pulls big time. I chose a 9 inch Shurline deck stain pad applicator; so I could spread it faster than a brush. Still couldn't keep up with this fast drying coating. Self leveling isn't happening once you disturb an area that is starting to setup beyond a certain period of time. I'm going to try it on a slightly smaller table. Maybe add/thin with something like Floetrol?

I needed something that would not only seal the brick but would also leave a smooth finish. This did the job. Was easy to apply with a brush and roller. No smell, dried in hours and water cleanup. I love this stuff. Will use again. The 120 year old brick wall looks great.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Not Bad I bought a Les Paul guitar kit and wanted something that would look good and last. If applied thick like recommended, it will level its self. Bad thing, you can get runs being so thick.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is! Very poor product - not able to deliver on promises. Idea of "water based, fast drying and only one coat needed" sounds too good to be true - because it is. The poly is thick and kicks so fast, you are not able to cover a large area (kitchen table top) without voids and leaving significant brush marks behind. We ended up doing light sanding and applying second coat. On recommendation of seller, we used roller. Got good coverage this time - but SUBSTANTIAL roller stipple left behind - which did not flatten out. Table now looks like it has a bad case of chicken pox! I'm contemplating sanding the entire mess off and going with 3 to 5 coats of traditional poly or varnish finish. Ugh!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Not quite triple-thick, but does cut work time in half I used one quart of this to finish some stained wood window frames and molding. I had perfectly fine results, comparable to twice the amount of coats with Rustoleum Ultimate Poly Satin, as long as the following precautions were followed: 1. Use a very high-quality synthetic brush; I used the Purdy XL medium-stiff 2.5" angle brush. If my trim was smaller, I had the same brush available in 2.0". 2. Never dip the brush more than 3/4" into the liquid, it will start to gum up into the brush otherwise. 3. The instructions call for application in one stroke; I could rarely do this, but finished in one direction with just the tips of the bristles after working the poly for a couple of minutes. 4. Constantly look back at your work; runs with this product are tougher to recover from than standard-thickness poly. Only use the bristle tips with very light pressure when correcting your "mistakes": 5. Have twice the number of brushes than you normally would need, at least if you're a novice like me; this product tends to load up the brush relatively quickly and you might want to put a brush into sudsy water and start working with a fresh one. While any poly is a lot easier to deal with on horizontal surfaces, this is still acceptable for vertical work. I was reluctant to try this based on some reviews, but it was a pleasant surprise.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Not Impressed at All This product promises to provide the coverage of more than one coat of ordinary urethane with only ONE coat of this extra-thick product. It went on "gloppy" and as hard as I tried (despite stirring), I couldn't apply it w/o brush marks. It reminded me of yogurt rather than paint. The instruction said it was self-leveling, so I finally just left it alone, and it did self-level before drying, though to be honest, the dried product really did not seem to be all that thick, or provide superior coverage.. Personally, I'd rather apply two coats of a fast drying product than one coat of this clear, as to achieve the self-leveling characteristic, it took longer to dry than other water-based urethane clears I've used. In fact, I sprayed 3 coats of regular water-based Varathane on a Ikea wood dresser with an HVLP sprayer in less time than it took to apply ONE coat of this product onto some dimensional lumber furniture pieces with this product using a brush. Sadly, I bought it on impulse on a store visit after reading the label. I wouldn't have purchased had I read the customer reviews here on homedepot.com website.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Good Quality Polyurethane This product goes on thicker than the regular poly. You will get about 50 sf of coverage. It doesn't require 2 coats with fine grit sanding between coats. It is also self leveling, which is helpful. Cleanup is easy with soap and water. Before applying it has to be free of wax and grease. However, the old finish doesn't have to be removed. All that is required is that the surface be abraded or roughed up for adhesion. Application is recommended with a synthetic bristle brush. Dry time is about 2 hours and curing takes about 48 hours. It is totally cured in 7 days. If you have stained the piece, make sure that the stain has fully cured before applying this polyurethane finish. This is recommended for furniture and interior doors and trim. It is not recommended for use outdoors or on floors. This product will save you time on your project completion.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from I think it's fantastic as the other reviews said don't try to correct your brush the product will fill in, and honestly I think it's probably one of the most stroke free finishes I've ever done. Because of the surface of the wood I'm finishing and against manufacturer and against manufacturer's recommendations, I started with a foam brush, slaughtering lots of it on to get down and all the cracks and crevices of the barn wood( yes I know this is not recommended, but with all of the cracks and crevices on the boards I was sealing , It just works better) making sure that I had completely covered all the areas, then quickly not allowing the product to set up at all , I followed with a bristle brush pulling it with the grain, end to end been came back with a good bristle brush, which cleaned up any puddling from the imperfect surface. After it dried I couldn't have been happier, very consistent I'm not sure if it would have been any better if I had sprayed it. I did a second coat the same way, came out fantastic as well. The finish really does look like I've done 6 coats, with the two applied. I have always used the satin finish but I'm going to try to go out next on a different project I'm working on and I will update my review

Rated 4 out of 5 by from great for fresh wood surface and small area I used this finish on my steps that I was refurbishing. I gave them a good sanding and then proceeded to make sure they were perfectly clean prior to applying the polyurethane. The material does go on thick and it's tough to work with but it does dry quickly, cleans up easily, and gives you a decent result in the end. like anything in life their pluses and minuses to everything. I wouldn't use this stuff on a large area project because of the dry time and thickness of the polyurethane, but for doing small jobs that you want a good result and decent protection on this product is great.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Varathane Triple Thick Left cloudy spots. I bought this to put on a dining table for my daughter and her family. I thought it would give me a thinker coverage and save time. I followed the instructions to the letter. It was triple thick. It left brush strokes on the first coat. I sanded it even. Then several days later I put on a second coat which left big cloudy spots! My daughter said it looked like Elmer's glue. I wish I had read further down in the reviews. I would not have made this purchase if I had seen that others had had such bad experience with the Varathane Triple Thick. Will never use product again!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Shine in a can When I first opened this product, I though I had made a mistake and picked up the wrong one. It was a caramel milky color and even after a vigorous stirring it was still milky. So I put the lid on the can and read the directions. Oh!!! it stays that way till you put it on and then it turns clear, it helps you see where you have already painted. Nice touch. I used a brush and a sponge brush to get a semi smooth surface. It took ;lots of sanding to get the surface I was looking for. I put a total of 4 coats on a gate door that is an interior gate with no problems. I sanded 5 times with 400 or better grit to get that glass feeling. It was a semi-gloss so I wasn't looking for a glass sheen but I have a very nice smooth finish on the gate. Was very satisfied with the product and will use it again in the future on some other interior projects.

It absolutely destroyed a table top that I was working on for weeks. Now I have to sand the whole thing down and start over again. It left streaks and ridges on the top of the table. So much for self leveling. It also yellowed in spots. And yes, I did stir enough and yes, I did use the proper brushes. I spent a fortune on this poly and it’s going to end up in the garbage

Rated 5 out of 5 by from LOVE THIS STUFF I used this on some wood projects I had in the house that were small and loved the fact that it was much thicker then the kind I usually use and it didn't drip. I make crafts during the winter to keep busy and have to avoid sprays or prolonged use of products. This gave me a nice thick finish with only one coat and no drips. A plus when you are working on miniature furniture or birdhouses and feeders. It didn't take any longer to dry then the kind I usually use, coverage was good, it went on evenly, and it looks great. I think it will look great many years down the road.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Works pretty good. I used a roller on a dining room table that came out good. Trick with this stuff is cutting it with mineral spirits. I dampened a 6 inch roller with mineral spirits then rolled in the polyurethane to get a good coating and rolled it opening table and by section . It was too cold to spray outside with the finish I usually use so i tried this and it worked may be my new way to finish when i cant spray it.
