Q:what would you say the difference in color is between summer oak and golden oak? is one more yellow than the other? One darker? Thanks

    Answer This Question

A:  Great question. Golden Oak has slightly darker shades than Summer Oak. Please keep in mind, different types of wood can affect the outcome of the color of the Varathane Stain and Poly. For this reason, we recommend to always test your stain to verify the desired color. Apply a test sample on a small inconspicuous area before proceeding with the entire job.

Q:I want to do my stairs darker. Its already has polyurethane on wood. Can I make darker stairs with this product?

      Answer This Question

A:  Olga, we do not recommend applying Varathane Stain and Poly in One to stairs or previously coated surfaces. This product is not designed to withstand foot traffic and works best when applied to bare wood. We recommend removing the previous coating by sanding and using Varathane Summer Oak Premium Wood Stain and Varathane Floor Finish Polyurethane for best results. http://www.homedepot.com/p/Varathane-1-gal-Clear-Semi-Gloss-Water-Based-Floor-Polyurethane-Case-of-2-230131/202057140

That is not what we like to hear! Different wood species may cause a slight variance in the color of our Varathane Summer Oak Stain and Polyurethane, however, the color should not be extremely different from the product label as you have described. We need to know more to get to the bottom of this. Please give us a call at 800-901-0411, we want to try to make things right! - Rust-Oleum Product Support 2 Rustoleum

I used this for the first time and it is the best ever! Sometimes when you combine poly or other clear coats to a stain it can feel gummy or hard to apply. Not this, it is smooth and thin and turns out amazing!

It went on easy & smooth. When I wanted it darker I just did another coat. Didn't need to put an coat of poly on top since poly was already in the stain.
