Asked by: val
You could but it definitely would need to be sealed afterwards. Product has a granular as enhancing agent which will eventually wear offf.

Can I enhance the oak grain on white mineral paint as well, with out staining the paint too much?
Asked by: Mickey
Good question, Mickey. Rust-Oleum Varathane Wood Grain Enhancer is suitable for use on bare and stained wood surfaces. This product works best on wood with a significant grain pattern such as red oak, white oak, or ash. We don't recommend applying this to painted wood as it will not perform properly. - Rust-Oleum Product Support 5

Do I use the wood grain enhancer before I stain with the antique white stain
Asked by: Paula
Great question, Paula! Rust-Oleum Varathane Wood Grain Enhancer can be applied to stained wood to help create a more unique look. You will want to ensure that the stain is dry prior to application. We recommend applying in a test area first to ensure the desired look.

It will work but not thrilled with finished product if your trying to get a high quailty finish. The enhancer is some type of fine granular material, so your flooding the grain with a filler. My POV is if you dont then put heavy coats of sealer finish the granular can wear off. Not sure this would be good If you come in contact with it especially in a dry form. This is a water base product, can be applied with a cloth on finished or stained wood. It is recommended to use a stiff brush to clean out the grain before application. My tests showed hardwoods with tight grains didn’t do,so well , red oak was ok, soft woods were best except it seemed to darken the exposed wood surface. Same in light hard woods. Comes in a plastic paint style can and plastic lid which seal very good to save unused product. This might be a good product for the novice finisher but other methods give you a higher quality and professional results.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from The Varathane White Wood Grain Enhancer adds a weathered look to dark, grainy, and highly figured... The Varathane White Wood Grain Enhancer adds a weathered look to dark, grainy, and highly figured woods. I tried this on a variety of woods to see how it would absorb. These woods included Dark Walnut, Mayan Walnut, Chechen, Red Oak, White Oak, Soft Maple, Okuomo, and Poplar. All of these are hardwoods of varying grain patterns. I found the best result on dark walnut. It looked very weathered after the white had absorbed into the grain. I applied several coats to get the result and it took some stirring to get the liquid uniform (it has a grainy feel to it). After applying the coats I let it dry and then lightly sanded with 150 grit to remove the white grains that were on the surface and not in the grain pores. I really like the look and I hope to have a large project using Dark Walnut as an excuse to use it. I gave it a 4/5 because it is limited to woods with specific grain patterns and natural color.

The 1 QT.WHITE WOOD GRAIN ENHANCER (CASE OF 2) by Varathane is an excellent product to add to your wood staining projects. This Wood Grain Enhancer is best mixed by stirring thoroughly before and occasionally during use. Prep your wood according to the easy to follow directions for best results. As with any paint or stain, read the directions first before starting your project as they will have "Tips" to enhance your efforts and are very much worth the time invested. Varathane White Wood Grain Enhancer cleans up very easily with soap and water. If you enjoy you finished project as much as I have with this White Wood Grain Enhancer you will have another wood project to be proud of! I highly recommend this product for the Professional and the Do It Yourself folks!

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Might be OK in the right application. I received this product to evaluate/review it, and it seeme... Might be OK in the right application. I received this product to evaluate/review it, and it seemed like a good fit. A number of my customers have asked about projects using reclaimed lumber or items that have a distressed look (i.e. restoration hardware). So this product piqued my interest because I thought it might give me a similar look. Overall I was disappointed. I chose to try the varathane wood grain enhancer on a scrap piece of white oak. I chose the oak because it has deep grain pores, as suggested by the product instruction. I first sawed the scrap using a rough cut band saw blade to give it a rustic appearance. I then applied 3 different base stains on the scrap (see photos). An ebony finish, java, and then some light grey paint, which I applied and wiped off before it cured so the grain came through. After waiting 24 hours for the base to dry I applied the wood grain enhancer using a rag wiping across (perpendicular) to the wood grain. On one side of the scrap I wiped off immediately (across grain) to see what the results would be. On the other, I let it sit for about 5-10 minutes before wiping excess. I found waiting a bit provided a look closer to what the manufacture advertised on the label. Then let it dry for several hours. Buffed it again to remove any loose product (next step would be clear topcoat for protection). It came out the best on the java stain. The ebony did not take it as well. And on the gray base paint it was too light to make any difference unless you did close inspection. The black grain enhance color would perhaps have been a better choice on light base stains. Bottom line it is not a look that I would get excited about and it does not look like a reclaimed lumber look like I was hoping for. That said it is a unique look and might appeal to some people. Or even a unique look for a small craft piece. I would be hesitant to use it on something more permanent like a bathroom vanity or flooring...I'm afraid I would quickly tire of the look, it appears trendy. Still it does what it says it will, deposit white into the grain of the wood. You need to choose wood that has a prominent grain pattern like oak or perhaps ash for domestics. Imports such as mahogany, wenge, or bubinga would be others that also have very open grains (but why would do such a thing to these beautiful natural grain woods). and would take this product well. Woods like typical pine, doug fir, or poplar would likely not work and be difficult. Might be a fun product to try on some craft pieces. Hope this helps.

I do a lot of woodworking and I am always looking for different "looks" I can give to a project. And now I with Varathane's Black Wood Grain Enhancer I have another "look" to add to the ones I already have. This grain enhancer is very simple to apply and can be used on any type of wood. To apply all you need to do is wipe the wood down with a water dampened cloth. Then using a wire brush run it across the wood with the grain. Let the wood dry and remove any dust. Then apply a liberal amount of the grain enhancer going against the wood grain and then remove the excess with a clean dry lint free cloth, again, going against the wood grain and your done. The grain enhancer can also be used even if you are going to use wood stain.

I received this product to try and evaluate it based on how well it achieves the results that Varathane claims. I could not be more happy with the results. The enhancer works by highlighting the grain of the wood white, just as advertised. It very well may or may not be your cup of tea in terms of overall effect but that is personal opinion and I am not going to enter that debate. That being said there is a market for this and if that is the look you are going for then I will definitely recommend you try this product. I have used numerous Varathane products for many different projects and can attest to their quality and durability.
