This will help. Key Word .......Help. It really depends how much splash, what the cabinet is made of, If the cabinet is made entirely of wood it would be best if the cabinet is coated completely inside and completely outside.

Jusr Beautiful.
This water based polyurethane is simple beautiful, super easy to apply and I am just excited now we can get professional finishes on a can!!!! No expensive equipment or booths. The key is how well prepped your surface is and FOLLOW THE INSTRUCTIONS! Spray no closer than 12" and light mists on the 1st coats, start spraying outside the object move in a continuous line and finish or release the valve outside the object, Wait 40-50 min and repeat... look at the guitar I applied the satin finish...

Varathane Polyurethane on Red Oak stained with Light Walnut
I read several negative reviews about uneven or difficult application. The trick is in the technique, which I was careful with. 1) Hold the can 18" from the target, start the spray and then carefully move closer, while moving the can left-right or up-down gently to evenly spray. 2) Make several passes, waiting between each coat to dry. Don't soak the wood with one pass. Instead try to have light coats, even if some spots get little coverage. You can come back and do it again. 3) Don't spray too long (not more than 30 - 45 seconds at a time). Aerosol cans get cold when the pressure drops (laws of physics) and that causes the air pressure to further drop and the can sputters large droplets. Wait between applications for the can to warm up again, then spray for 30 seconds. 4) The last 1/5 of the can will not have enough pressure to produce a fine aerosol. Use that for areas that are not visible, so uneven application won't be visible. I used the last 1/4 of the can for the bottom of the shelves of the rack I built that would not be visible. The spray can costs more, therefore I rated it lower in value, but certainly did a good job on my workpiece.

Varathane h2o based Poly Spray-Gloss
If you paint anything white this is not the one. It will turn light yellow. For white color - pricey Enduro is the one which you will not find at HD. For ultimate can spray nozzle mechanism go with superior MINIWAX which you will not find at HD.

We understand your frustration, Benny. For the best results with Rust-Oleum Varathane Water-based Polyurethane Spray, make sure to not over apply the product. Apply light mist coats, holding can 10 to 12 inches from the surface and spray with a smooth sweeping motion to avoid runs and sags. Several light coats provides for a better finish than one heavy coat. - Rust-Oleum Product Support 5 Rustoleum

Dries fast but very granular as the spray spits droplets no matter how well agitated. The spray nozzle is not adjustable and does not come out very evenly. Applied 4 coats on clear dry cherry with #220 sanding between coats but still very thin and bumpy. Going to try the oil based version for the final coat.

That's not what we expect, Dave! For the best results, we recommend applying several light coats of Rust-Oleum Varathane Water-Based Polyurethane Spray. When possible, we recommend applying to a vertical surfaces, so that larger drops fall to the ground and not on the surface.

After trying 3 different cans of this spray and yes I shook them very well. I have come to the conclusion that there needs to be some serious upgrades on the spray nozzle. The nozzle sputters and spits a very thick uneven flow of product. I have more than a fair amount of experience with furniture refinishing and other wood projects, so I'm comfortable with this assessment. Two of the cans I bought a week ago and the other one approximately 3 months ago. However surprisingly, the actual finished result came out very nicely. The splatters and unevenness seem to level themself out, giving a nice thick smooth to touch finish... So once there's a improvement on the nozzle, the product would deserve a straight 5 stars...
