Q:Can I sand this product (after it has dried up and hardened) on a rainy or lightly rainy day?

    1 Answer
    Answer This Question

A:  Hi Jeremy, once our Varathane Wood Filler has hardened, it will sand to a powder. If sanding when the surface is damp or wet, just sand and then wipe the surface with a damp rag to remove any sanding debris. - Rust-Oleum Product Support 2

          Messy but works well
I used this with their wood hardener also. Needed it done, new flooring coming in. Fixed a small area of stairway skirt with old termite damage. Wasn’t practical to replace the wood. Clean out as much of the damaged wood as possible. Must work quickly, dries rather fast. It is messy. Work in thin layers and give a little time for each one to firm up. Have acetone poured and ready to clean putty knives. I gave it an hour before sanding. Used joint compound to fill in divots.

            Totally useless crumbly garbage
I followed the directions for mixing and application. Within about 2 minutes the stuff was hard and crumbly, and the part I applied to my project was not filling properly. I took several passes at this trying to mix less at a time. Same results every time. I’ve been woodworking for over 35 years and this is just junk. I bought it because it was more expensive than the rest on the shelf and I thought that would translate into better results.

              ruined multiple projects
This stuff has ruined multiple projects of mine now. It is not stainable whatsoever. I followed the instructions extremely carefully and still got horrible looking splotches all over my projects. Do not use this product.

                Unusable product
Based upon previous poor ratings, I performed a test of the product before using on my job. As directed, I VERY accurately measured out 1/16 teaspoon of the catalyst and 3 teaspoons of the wood filler (the 1:50 ratio specified on the can label). A timer was started. The outdoor temperature was 57* F, the sky was very cloudy, and the test was performed in the shade away for the sun. The mixture was thoroughly mixed for two minutes. First, the wood filler is too thin and soft to fill a large vertical defect in lumber. I think it will slump and slowly fall out. It is not stiff enough to stay put in a significant hole - only a narrow crack. Second, at seven minutes the wood filler suddenly seized up w/in seconds and turned solid and chunky. The instructions note a 15 minute work time. This product was a total failure and unusable. Do not buy, IMO.

                  Soul crusher!
This product is total garbage in a can. This product completely ruined my day. As Someone Who is new to home repair, it has shaken my confidence to The core. I tried to mix according to the instructions, but it was impossible to get the right mixing ratio. I mixed in the lid as suggested on the can, but it says not to mix what can’t use in 15 mins. It dried in about a minute and a half and it was a total clumpy mess. This product is BAD!!!!!’

It dries real grainy. Not like Bondo filler but you were out and I needed it the day I bought it, as I was out of Bondo filler. Harder to sand out too.

                    Garbage
They don't put enough solvent into it, so no matter how you mix it, it never gets creamy enough to work smooth. Since Home Depot doesn't carry the old MinWax variety, I guess I'll have to make my entire purchase at that other box store whenever I (also) need any wood filler.

                      Two-part resin-hardener = small batches, work fast
I've used Bondo and Varathane to reinforce existing wood after digging out bad wood due to termites or wood rot. What you have to appreciate is that this is fast setting two-part filler. Mix in small batches and WORK FAST! I take no more than one or two minutes at a time to use it so I mix amounts accordingly, only what I can lay in within two minutes. That it is fast-setting is useful. The first 30-60 seconds it's creamy and spreads well, after that it starts thickening quickly.
