Q:What is the sheen when it dries? Matte or shiny?
by|Nov 13, 2022

Answer This Question

A:  Happy to help! Rust-Oleum Varathane Fill Stick will not have a set finish, as it will be dependent on the condition of the repair and how much it is worked into the surface. If needing to achieve a certain finish, you can apply a thin coat of Rust-Oleum Varathane Water-Based Ultimate Polyurethane. https://www.homedepot.com/s/Varathane%20Water-Based%20Ultimate%20Polyurethane?NCNI-5 - Rust-Oleum Product Support 3

    Answer This Question

A:  We can help you! Rust-Oleum Varathane Wood Fill Stick is best for filling nail holes, scratches, and minor imperfections in the wood. It would not be able to work well with larger gaps. For that purpose, we recommend using the Rust-Oleum Varathane Wood Filler instead. https://www.homedepot.com/p/Varathane-12-oz-Wood-Filler-340228/305626726? - Rust-Oleum Product Support 5

A:  We wouldn't recommend it, better for scratches on furniture and that sort of thing

      Answer This Question

A:  Glad to help out, Maya. After allowing the Rust-Oleum Varathane Wood Fill Stick to completely dry, you can certainly paint over it. We suggest applying it to a test area first to ensure the desired results. - Rust-Oleum Product Support 5

I used this Varathane Fill Stick on a nearly 30 year old chest. There was a large chunk of wood missing on the top area. This stick says walnut for the color but like others have stated, it looks grey more than anything else. I'm sure a small nick in wood would be easy to fill but this large area took some work. I had to fill the area then contour the fill to the right shape. The finished job didn't look the best due to the color mismatch but once dry, I used a touch up pen and colored the fill and surrounding area. It's not perfect but it looks much better in my opinion.

A bit hard to match color but definitely a solid fill. I did not expect a perfect match because of how wood is. Natural wood product is multi-colored and hard to match. You'll want to go over it with a stain or varnish especially if the area is big. I got this to help out with some nicks along the edge of my table. It did a good job filling the crevices, but I feel I should have gone with a darker color to match some of the darker grains. I'm familiar with art supplies and noticed this behaved very similarly to a pastel crayon. It's a bit of a pasty material. To fill the wood, rub it over the blemish several times. Take a damp cloth or wet finger and rub away the excess around the edge of the blemish. You'll be left with a fill in the blemish. The fill is a matte sheen, so if you have varnished furniture you'll need to touch up after that. It's about as easy to use as a pastel crayon too. No messing with brushes or putty knives. I recommend getting a couple different colors so you can be sure to blend into the grain well!

Reminds me of a hard crayon. The fill stick is harder than I expected. It is not as pliable as wood putty. I used a small knife blade to cut into it and found it surprising thick and hard to cut through. I wonder if mine has dried up more than normal. It does however spread with some effort when used as you would use a crayon. The Varathane fill stick is part of a well respected corporation Rust-Oleum. We use many of the Rust-Oleum products especially their metal paints and have always been satisfied with their quality.

Varathane Fill stick Natural, This is a fill stick for filling small holes cracks scratches in wood. works very easy by passing the stick over the crack with some pressure and use a puddy knife to level or remove excess material. I usually use a straight blade razor. There are many color options to choose so matching your woods details blend right in . You can also seal this with a thin coat of polyurethane. Easy to apply and works well.

Perfect for filling minor imperfections. This is a wax like product that has the consistency of a soft crayon. I trimmed a bunch of windows and doors in red oak with an English Chestnut stain and even though my nail heads are small, there were a lot of them to touch up. This stick worked really well. It is just the right consistency for filling nail hole countersinks. I just rubbed the stick over the nail hole with firm pressure and scraped any excess away with my thumbnail. I am not sure I would want to use this on a large defect in the wood - and its too soft to stand up to traffic and wear although it can be coated with poly if you need more protection. But for small touch ups or defects that are not at eye level, this is perfect.

The Varathane 3.5 oz golden oak wood fill stick is similar to a crayon and is so easy to use. Simply open the package and follow the instructions on the back. I have ash cabinets which are the color of golden oak. The product filled in small nicks and scratches quite well and the color blended smoothly as well. The stick I have says it is for use on golden oak, golden pecan, and Ipswich pine. I tried using it on some areas which had more severe damage and it did not work ,but then that is to be expected, as refinishing is probably needed. I am not giving this item five stars because I do not like the fact that both ends are usable, which is not a good thing because after using one end pieces flaked off and the other unused end got on my hands. There is also no cap. I would have preferred a design with one usable end with a cap.

          Varathane white wood fill stick
Purchased this white fill stick to cover all the nail holes after installing the white pine moldings around 8 windows and the entry door in the sunroom at our new house. I had miter-cut all the moldings after painting them, and installed them on the window frames using a Ryobi brad nailer. This nailer left very small holes to fill. I found that the best/fastest way to apply the white filler was to use a 1-1/2" plastic putty knife. I used the sharp edge of the knife to cut small pieces of the filler, then press it into the nail holes. Then I used the edge of the putty knife to scrape off the excess filler. After doing a few holes, the hole-filling process went very quickly. The color of the filler was a nearly perfect match to the white semi-gloss paint I used. Very satisfied with the results.
