Can I use it on these shaker style oak wood cabinets without sanding/adding any other products? Will it turn out the proper color? I already bought it

Asked by Jen June 5, 2021

Answer

Happy to help, Jen! Rust-Oleum Varathane Classic Wood Stain must be applied to bare, sanded to wood to ensure proper penetration. We also recommend applying in a test area first to ensure the desired color, since the wood species used can affect the final color. - Rust-Oleum Product Support 3

Answer

Glad to lend a hand, Tom. Rust-Oleum Varathane Classic Wood Stain in Weathered Oak can definitely be applied pine wood. We do recommend with softer woods such as that be conditioned to ensure a uniform finish. For that, you can used the Rust-Oleum Varathane Wood Conditioner. https://www.homedepot.com/p/Varathane-1-qt-Wood-Conditioner-342087/305704375 - Rust-Oleum Product Support 5

Answer

Thank you for reaching out! Our Varathane Wood Stains work best for interior wood surfaces. For an exterior fence, we recommend using one of our Wolman Wood Stain coatings: https://www.homedepot.com/b/Paint-Exterior-Wood-Coatings-Exterior-Wood-Stains/Wolman/N-5yc1vZbbbmZ5ep - Rust-Oleum Product Support 2

Answers

Thank you for reaching out! If Gunstock is the color you would like, we recommend applying the Varathane Classic Gunstock Wood Stain, then polyurethane in the sheen of your choice. We do also offer our Varathane Oil-Based Stain & Polyurethane, which is a tinted polyurethane coating: https://www.homedepot.com/p/Varathane-1-qt-American-Chestnut-Satin-Oil-Based-Interior-Polyurethane-and-Stain-2-Pack-339613/305535877 - Rust-Oleum Product Support 2

How do I care and clean any future stains or spots after this stain is applied on my furniture?

Asked by Danielle April 17, 2021
1
Answer

Happy to help, Danielle! Rust-Oleum Varathane Classic Wood Stain is a penetrating product that dries and hardens inside the wood. To protect the finish on interior furniture, we recommend finishing with Rust-Oleum Varathane Ultimate Polyurethane. Once the finish has cured, the surface may be cleaned with standard nonabrasive household cleaners. https://www.homedepot.com/p/Varathane-1-qt-Clear-Satin-Oil-Based-Interior-Polyurethane-341720/305583791 - Rust-Oleum Product Support 4

If it was aged completely I personally would not have an issue with using it.

What kind of seal do apply after i stain my doors?

Answers

Great question, Jo. If the Rust-Oleum Varathane Classic Wood Stain was applied on an exterior door, then we recommend using Rust-Oleum Varathane Spar Urethane. For inside, you'll need to use an interior polyurethane. https://www.homedepot.com/b/Paint-Exterior-Wood-Coatings-Exterior-Wood-Sealers/Varathane/N-5yc1vZaquxZ641/Ntk-EnrichedProductInfo/Ntt-spar%2Burethane?NCNI-5&storeSelection=1950,1912,1986,1976,1961&experienceName=default - Rust-Oleum Product Support 5

We can help! While our Varathane line does not offer an exterior stain, Rust-Oleum Varathane Classic Wood Stain can be topcoated with a suitable spar for durability on exterior surfaces. Answer

Thank you for reaching out! An exterior wood stain such as our Wolman DuraStain is a better option in most cases for exterior wood surfaces, however, our Varathane Classic Wood Stain may be applied to exterior wood surfaces if our Varathane Spar Urethane is applied over it to protect the finish. https://www.homedepot.com/p/Varathane-1-qt-Clear-Gloss-Water-Based-Exterior-Spar-Urethane-250041H/100162024 - Rust-Oleum Product Support 2

Excellent color match for the door I needed. This was the best stain I have ever used. It is very watery but covers like a champ. Just a little bit is required. If you have a small project (like a door) I recommend buying the smaller can. This covers a lot.

I used two coats and I achieved the color I was hoping to get. I used Dark Walnut over red oak hardwood. Then I gave it two coats of Varathane oil based polyurethane in the satin sheen. I will be redoing all my floors in this color.

Step upgrade
I was very pleased with the outcome of the Early American Varathane Stain. I was in the process of installing a new set of oak steps to my basement and did not want something dark going down the steps, but not something really light that it would show every spot of dirt. I ended up only needing 2 coats of stain, but applied 3 coats of polyutherane so it would hold up to my kids running up and down them constantly. I think they turned out great, i even ended up staining my hand railing to match.
