Questions & Answers

Does a vent to cover the blades come with the fan? If not, what should I use?

Asked by: Wesson
Simply measure the diameter of the "inside" of your fan enclosure and cut a circle out of a piece of 1/4inch plywood to fit. Next, screw an inexpensive cabinet handle to it and slide it in during the winter months! Make sure you unplug or, put an off/on switch on the solar panel or you'll burn up the motor!

How many hours of sunlight are required, and can this operate without direct sunlight? I am looking for a fan to use in the winter to prevent ice damns and need to know if this is an option.
Asked by: Kris
It will operate from sun up to sun down. will just run slower as the light dims down. I use mine during the summer to help cool the attic by pushing out the hot air through the gable on the east end while pulling cooler air from the west end. Hope this helps.

My house ridge line runs north/south. With only one panel, which side of the house should I install the solar panel, or can I buy an additional panel to cover both sides of the roof ridge line?
Asked by: Lee
Hi Lee, The best location to place your panel is either a southern or western exposure if available, away from trees and afternoon shadows. This panel has a 25-foot wire to allow for placement in an ideal spot on your roof - we do offer additional solar panels for purchase if you'd like to go that route; your local Home Depot store will be able to assist you, or you can call our customer service line at 800-433-1626 for more information.

Customer Reviews

433 CFM Solar Powered Gable Mount Power Attic Ventilator is rated 4.0 out of 5 by 27.
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Free Solar Cooling The product arrived in good shape and on schedule. The instructions were clear and adequate for the installation. Installation took 4.5 hours, including a trip to Home Depot for a sheet of OSB and a sawcut to prepare it for installation. When attaching the L brackets to the housing, be sure the bolts are pulled well down the slot toward the edge so the fan blade won't hit the heads. The wire on the solar panel is very long, which allows a lot of options for it's location. Knowing I would later shorten it, I didn't hesitate to clip off the spade lugs to facilitate poking the wire through the ridge vent into my garage attic. After installation, I covered the gable vent on the opposite side to draw more air through the house vents. Before winter, I plan to add a thermostat to keep from chilling the attic too much in cold weather. The fan is located over the garage, though I don't believe it would have been a problem over the living room as it is very quiet. I can't produce fact & figures yet, but our impression is the AC is running less, and the garage & kitchen are certainly cooler.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Works according to spec, well worth the money I've had this for a year now and it works very well. I am surprised about how powerful it is. I have it in my solarium and got a thermostat to control it. I wait for it to fail someday but am pleasantly surprised that it keeps on ticking. I am thinking of getting another. The solar panel is well worth the money hands down. The solar panel installation bracket needed modifications since I have it mounted on a vertical surface and not a horizontal roof which is what it's made for.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Works perfect! I had to adjust the fan shroud because one of the blades was hitting the bracket but, after a few minor adjustments, it worked well. Installation was rather simple, even though I have a Terra Cotta Tile roof and had to make a free standing platform to mount the solar panel. I also placed an off/on switch in line, so that I could turn the fan off during winter months! My only negative comment would be, the price is a bit steep for the quality of the fan and it's parts but by the same token, living in Arizona with the outdoor temperature getting upward of 120 degrees, the attic gets over 140 and it's a good place for a fire to start and with that in mind, this fan is priceless if it saves lives!

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Not worth the money or your time The first fan was delivered and the hardware was falling our of the box and most was missing. The second fan didn't work when I checked it before I installed it. I called their tech support and found I had set it up right and the fan was broken.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Nice Solar Fan , Moves alot of Air All in all this unit would have gotten 5 stars from me if they had put a little thought into the hardware supplied. I mean R56 cable clips for 18 gauge wire ? tall headed machine screws instead of pan or carriage bolts inside the fan housing very close to the fan blades and I tapped and used machine screws in the heavy aluminum solar panel frame instead of using the supplied sheet metal screws. but I would buy it again ,and recommend this unit., even if means you may find yourself taking a trip to Home Depot for better hardware.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Has quality control issues. When I removed the fan from the shipping box I noticed the fan didn't appear to be tight on the motor shaft. After further investigation I discovered the motor shaft was smaller that the blade assembly center diameter. I had to place some thin metal sheeting around the motor shaft to get it to fit properly so I could tighten the allen head retaining screw. The dynamic balance of the blades, when the is fan running, is still slightly off but it works.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Just note doesn't have a bracket for solar panel Haven't seen it work yet but one problem is i have to make or get a bracket to install the soar panel. Unless I am missing something is will be a pain. Mastercraft panel came pre-installed with a bracket on its panel
