you should face your fan away from the prevailing wind in your area , it can blow across the fan but not into it , if you dont know the direction of the prevailing winds then either ask a neighbor or look at the trees , they usually lean away from the prevailing wind

Cool Attic 1600 CFM Power Gable Mount Attic Vent is rated 3.9 out of 5 by 125.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from so far, so good! Although our new attic ventilator fan has only been installed about 6 weeks, it has run almost constantly due to the heat. It hasn't failed, slowed down or caused any worries. When I installed it, I made rubber gaskets to use with the installation screw so you barely notice any noise. It sounds like a fan running if you do notice! We are counting on this fan to last. So far, it's been hot, real hot. So far, so good.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Why'd I wait so Long I just purchased and installed this attic fan, so I can't comment on the longevity, so I'm hoping it will last a long time... I installed this per recommendations. I sealed the edges of the exit so to have a maximum draw of airflow from my attic and exit out a side wall vent. I don't have air conditioning in my 1200 sqft. house located in the San Fernando Valley. It gets hot here. The 1600 cfm unit I purchased has a thermostat. At this point I can only ask myself... Why did I wait so long to purchase this thing! The house is so much cooler. I maybe should have waited till the mid of summer to write this review, but I can truly feel a difference already. Yes I have already recommended this unit to a friend of mine who does have central air conditioning in his house that's about 1100 sqft. I am convinced that his house will be cooler and cost less money and use less energy to run his AC. Good product... worth the $80.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Very Thin metal do not buy I purchased this item thinking it was the same as the one I had installed some years ago. The product arrived with one box inside another box. This was to protect the item but it did not work. The fan and the mounts are very thin metal. The item was so damaged the fan blades would not turn around even right out of the box. Spend a little more and get a quality product. I had no problems returning the fan to Home Depot. I then purchased a Master Flow fan for $112 that has much heavier metal and I love it

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Returned mine yesterday The housing and blades are so flimsy that it could not hold the motor in the center of the opening. I could not rate the motor because the whole assembly shook and vibrated so much that the blades hit the housing and locked it up. This was the first day of running. I am very disappointed in the quality. My last one lasted 30 years without missing a beat. Watch your hands, the metal is thin and sharp.

Therefore, it has not gone on much. I had to make some adjustments for it to work in my original housing. And I had to set the thermostat up-side-down so as to reach the existing electrical supply. The current design has 4 blades. The older model had 6. Until the weather is hot, I will not know if this has any negative affect. Price was right. And doable for a older homeowner.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from In my opinion a good investment Before buying this fan last year I checked the reviews on it and although there were several that were not happy with it I felt that there was not enough to make me not make the purchase. I am now going into my second year of using this fan; and so far it has performed very well for me hopefully I'll be in a position to update this review with a added positive comment next year.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from thermostat switch worthless It's a cheap fan but moves a lot of air and that's what I wanted. Unfortunately the thermostat switch is so insensitive that the fan will not turn on or off without me manually turning the dial on the thermostat. And since it is located 12" from the fan which is installed in the roof gable, this is very inconvenient. My 'fix' will be to install a standard wall switch inline from the power source and locate that switch where I can reach it without a ladder. At least I will be able to turn the fan on and off manually.

The fan was ordered for a replacement and it looked identical to the previous unit but the blades needed to be cut down about 1/4" each to clear the dome housing from which the previous installation had been installed years ago. This was done carefully and after installation, the replacement fan worked satisfactorily. In other words, the ring around the new fan was not used to avoid cutting and fitting a new hole into the roof. We used the existing ring which had been mounted and which had worked perfectly until the old fan (30 years) failed; The decision involved some head scratching but had a satisfactory ending. The fan unit works, it's solidly mounted in the old ring and does not vibrate. The blades were marked and cut carefully with tin snips so all things considered, price, delivery, etc. I am satisfied that the new attic fan will do the job.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Don’t listen to the haters. Just put this in... Don’t listen to the haters. Just put this in with knowledge that some minor adjustments are needed to position all the parts before setting all the mounting hardware. Carefully tweak the blades so they’re “even” so to speak (balanced) and it’ll perform very well. Quiet and effective. Note: not mentioned in the on-line descriptions is that this will NOT be effective if the roof only has roof mounted vents. Plug them, if there are any, and install a gable vent at opposite end of the attic to get good cross ventilation thru the entire attic. Our vent fan volume was a little overkill and not plugging the last roof vent at the opposite end of the attic was required to provide enough air intake flow. Otherwise it’ll start sucking a lot of expensively chilled air from the house thru all the holes at outlets, switches, ceiling lights, plumbing penetrations,... Just Do This! And follow instructions! Don’t be a wussy and expect it to just snap into place. You’ll get more personal satisfaction that you’ve succeeded in doing something right. And probably have more insulation blown in the attic too while you’re at it. Only about $600 for a 1300 sf home with attic access.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Loose fan blades rattle when in use! When the fan spins, the blades created an extremely loud rattling noise. Upon inspection, the rivets used to anchor blades at factory were loose allowing blades to chatter when spinning.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Very poor quality Even though the reviews on this fan were bad I went ahead and ordered this fan. The poor reviews were right. The fan arrived with bent blades and it would not even turn in the housing it came with. So I did what others have done I removed the motor and thermostat from the housing. I threw all the other parts away and used the housing and fan blades that were with my old burnt out fan. After about an hour I had everything reassembled and running. So far the motor is good. So I would not recommend anyone to buy this fan unless they have an old fan housing with thick rigid metal parts.
