Q:I need to reduce the thickness for an older window. Can I run the sill through a thickness planer or should I use a table saw?

Answer This Question

A:  I've had good luck using my table saw. My question to you is where did you find this PVC window sill? I'm on the phone with HD right now and they can't find it in any store near Tulsa Oklahoma and they are not sure if they even carry it anymore.

A:  PVC cement, available in plumbing. Ask an associate, IF you can find one.

    by|Oct 9, 2019

A:  I use 2-1/2" tread screws and run them in from under the nose back in to the sill. Totally hidden. I also apply adhesive caulk first

    by|Oct 16, 2019

A:  Use PVC cement, such as is sold for chemically welding PVC pipe. First, dry-fit the two pieces to assure an accurate fit. Clean any dust or grease from the surfaces to be joined. Apply the cement to the portion of each piece that will make contact, and press the two pieces into place. Use several woodworking clamps for a consistent, tight joint. The cement sets very quickly, so it is important that the pieces are properly prepared before gluing.

Q:Can the width be cut to smaller than 5.25-in?

        Answer This Question

A:  Due to the bottom profile, you are limited to how much you can trim it down.

        by|Oct 16, 2019

A:  Yes it can, but you may lose one "support leg" on it, and have to shim it in place. Look at the sectional view, and you'll see what I mean. You can always use a piece of PVC brickmold to make a shim, and use pvc cement to glue it on.

          by|Oct 9, 2019

A:  Yes, it can be cut to size.

I used this in combination with sill nosing the replace some rotting wooden sills. The finished product looked great. The only negative is that the sill wasn’t quite wide enough to give sufficient overhang for a proper drip edge. It may be okay on newer homes but older homes were built with larger dimension wood. An additional 1/2” to 3/4” width would be nice.

I used the Veranda sills and noses to repair all 28 of my old wooden windows. I wish I had discovered this solution years ago instead of attempting to patch old rotten wood. PVC is easy to work with and fit was perfect.

Generally, the product is very good and once installed with the sill noses looks like the original. the materials are a bit thinner than the original, so there was some shimming needed to make the product work. Otherwise, I have no complaints.

Used along with the PVC nosing piece, this makes for an amazing fix for rotted sills. I would never use wood again. NEVER. Takes paint well, I use fine sandpaper to rough it up. It can be hard to find, though, since The Home Depot has decided to cut the number of employees. In fact, everything is tougher to find. What's up with that?

Good product glad they decided to stock this after not having them for a while. This sill mates with a piece of nosing that makes replacing the sill on an otherwise quality window with insulated glass and rotted sill worth doing.
