Can I use this to cap red wood lattice

Asked by Zimi February 23, 2021

Zimi, Sure. As long as the wooden lattice thickness is not greater than the slot in the cap molding. EZ PZY. However, I guess I have to ask the question, "Why?" I realize vinyl lattice (it comes with openings in two sizes) is more expensive than sheets of treated wooden lattice but it will last much longer than the wooden variety and can be painted any color you want. Vinyl takes paint well as long as it is clean and dry. Both Krylon and Rustoleum offer a wide range of colors in spray cans. I would lay out your vinyl lattice and caps cut to size before installation, on a tarp and spray two coats of the color of red you are looking for. I've done this plenty of times over the years and the vinyl lattice looks just like the day I put it up. On the other hand, the (treated) wooden variety will splinter, come apart, shed paint and will probably need replacing before you want to.

What is the exact width of the inner track? I am going to put it inside of a shelf area to slide vertical sections of heavy duty pegboard pieces.

That should work, I would drill and put screws around it if you are going to frame it. If it is only on the bottom I would not be concerned. I like the idea and may use it myself.

do the cap mouldings fit together without cutting them

Susan, I'm not sure what you are getting at here but the cap mouldings for vinyl lattice are usually very easy to work with. If you are talking about long runs at either the top or the bottom of a piece of lattice, joining is usually done at the 90 degree corners where the piece of lattice ends. In this case, you just cut the moulding at a 45 degree angle and "picture frame" the lattice. If you are talking about using shorter pieces, sure, you can butt the two ends together. There are no fittings that come with the product that help you join two pieces together. Regardless of what kind of cut you are making, make sure you use a fine-tooth blade to minimize burrs. I always use a dab of silicone caulk at the joints to keep it in place. Remember though, this stuff, like all vinyl products is susceptible to slight heat and cold expansion and shrinkage. Not much, but just enough to cause slight openings in your joints. However, the clean, professional look you get is worth it. You'll never notice.

can these be used to secure the lattice to the inside side of two fence posts.

I believe you could do this as you described. You would have to find a way to screw , glue or nail them to your post first. Is your post also vinyl?I just used them to frame the edges of my decorative vinyl panels. Hope this helped some.

You might want to visit the store where you bought them or are thinking of buying them and measure it and get the screws to fit.

Don't know exactly what you mean. I would think it would not retain paint very well.

can you glue or bond the c channel to a concrete patio floor for support of the lattice?

I don't see why not. Use a weatherproof glue.

I used this to frame tempered glass to make self storing interior storm windows to cover the original windows in my converted school bus. I used white caulking to hold the glass in place. First I glued the glass into the channels (all 4 sides), used bungie cords to hold it all tight together and let that dry for a few days. Once that was dry, I laid the framed glass out and recaulked one side. Let that dry for a few days, flipped it over, caulked the other side and let it dry for few days. The openings where the storm windows go are framed with more lattice cap. The storm windows are hinged to the lattice cap (very carefully because tempered glass shatters, not cracks). This set up make the windows in my bus well-insulated. They also create thermal breaks because all of the aluminum framing is covered in the vinyl lattice cap. I can open the storm windows to clean the inside of the top-down bus windows. I can also open them to allow fresh air in. I made small window screens that I pop into the open windows from the inside.
