Questions & Answers

can melamine be used for kitchen counter top.

can melamine be used for kitchen counter top.
Asked by: cliff
Cliff: Yes, for a temporary countertop - for a permanent, long term solution, unlikely...but if you're very careful and diligent using cutting boards to protect the coated melamine surface and careful not to throw heavy objects on it when unloading groceries. In all fairness, the same advice holds true for even the most expensive high-end countertops, including Granite, Solid Surface, etc. Until I can afford buying a white Quartz countertop, I'm currently using white Melamine as a temporary countertop as I'm removing old counters section by section that have (circa 1980's) tiles, grout and wire (they are a total pain to remove) . One thing I have discovered, using the melamine boards as a temporary countertop, is their resiliency to staining from fruit juice, etc. and I've moved my coffee maker, ceramic coffee cups etc. - sliding them on top and still I have no scratches (and the board's been on one of my base cabinets for a couple of months now). This sparked my interest in the product and did some about Melamine vs Laminate/Formica, this is what I found out: "Melamine is a laminate, but not all laminates are melamine some are called Formica. Melamine is considered, and often referred to as, a direct or low pressure laminate (LPL) because it is manufactured with a pressure of 300-500 pounds-per-square-inch. Layers of paper are saturated with a melamine resin until they are converted into a solid, plastic surface via thermal fusion. The melamine sheets are molded together as one of the layers of plastic laminate, which is then bonded together with particleboard. Whereas plastic laminate, (like Formica) comes in a variety of colors and textures, is made from multiple layers of kraft paper soaked in plastic resin and placed into drying chambers. The material is a high pressure laminate (HPL), manufactured under 1,400 pounds of pressure per-square-inch, more than three times over melamine sheets and more durable.

Can I use the entire sheet as a closet slidding door? Would it warp or bend wich time?

Asked by: Gus
Melamine sheets are flatter and more dimensionally stable than veneer core plywood. If you have the same temperature and humidity on both sides of the door, I can't see why it would warp. Furthermore, you could edge band all four edges to keep the humidity out totally.

Bathboard works better; it's thinner, lighter, cheaper.

Customer Reviews

Melamine White Panel (Common: 3/4 in. x 4 ft. x 8 ft.; Actual: .750 in. x 49 in. x 97 in.) is rated 4.3 out of 5 by 239.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent materiel I have used this mel board for decades both black and white to make cabinets, desks, office counters, computer work centers, and shelving. I even used it in my kitchen as a temporary sink counter for four years until I could replace it with the real thing. It held up very well for being in a wet place but I don't recommend it for that. The desks and counters I made for commercial offices were heavily used and lasted for 15+ years until the warehouse was totally rebuilt. You can edge it with white edging tape or use solid hardwoods. You can also use vinyl Tee molding (commonly called "slap" molding. It is best cut, in my opinion, with 1/4" carbide tipped router bits. I am currently making a sewing room for my wife and I will use this materiel for a sturdy sewing table, extensions, and work area.

I started quilting, and needed a good work table, so I bought a 4x8 sheet and had them cut it to a 3x6 foot, then I put some homemade saw horses under it. This made the table up to the right height, the material slides on it, it is strong enough to cut, sew, iron on it. This was a great investment, Stan who works in Hardware at the West Mifflin store got me some iron tape that finished it off great. You can lean on it, and if need be, I would stand on it if I needed to.

It helps to use a fine tooth carbide blade after masking taping the cut line first. Hole saw works better than drills with fewer chips. Lightly sanding cut edges in an angle reduces appearance of any small chips. Using for long sewing machine(s) table. Put white plastic 3/4” screen mold on exposed edge with nail gun, filled holes with white caulk

The melamine coating didn't even cover the whole surface of the board and an edge needed to be cut off, they are oversized for this, but it is still a pain. The quality of these boards are no where near in comparison to their smaller shelf boards. It gets fair over poor because I was able to use it.
