What is the actual length of the six foot sections?

I need 5 ft 10 in from wall to column just wondering if this would work or if I will need a bigger piece.

PVC versus Composite

The Veranda Traditional Pre-Built PVC railing is less expensive than the Veranda Regency Composite railing. From this pricing, is it safe to assume that Composite is of better quality/durability than the PVC? Or is there some reason to select one over the other without regard to pricing? Thanks !

can the railings be cut to fit smaller opening then 6ft?

Asked by: Luis
Dear LDrestre: With some difficulty, yes, but it is obviously challenging to get a nice clear 90 degree cut. I highly recommend the Veranda kit that is not pre-assembled, which allows you to cut the rails on a chop / mitre saw for a tight fit. The 'Pro' version of this kit also includes stainless steel brackets that hide under the rail -- instead of the 'pocket' brackets that are visible at the ends of every rail. See: Veranda Model # 73013127, Home Depot Internet # 202581596 and the matching brackets and composite post sleeves at the bottom of the web page for this product. Here are some tips for installation: (1) Composite vs vinyl: We prefer Veranda Regency composite rail kits, which are inherently much stronger, require no reinforcement and are easy to trim and install. See: Veranda Model # SEC17 RW R13 KD W/HW, Home Depot Internet #301173176 Store SKU #1002339365 The composite is coated with white vinyl, which makes it easy to wash off in the spring (use vinegar). After five New England winters, my own deck looks as good as new. Veranda composite is also strong enough to mount flower boxes on -- please post another question if you want directions. (2) Composite post sleeves: Also buy matching composite post sleeves, which are much stronger than the thin vinyl ones -- to avoid distortion. See: Veranda Model # POST SLV 48 WH VER, Home Depot Internet #205031240 Store SKU #1000044739 Use poly shims to position the sleeve and hold it tight on the post when you install the rails. See: Model # SHM1-12-TW, Home Depot Internet #202807695 Store SKU #526445 (3) Installation: You will need a cut-off / mitre saw with a fine toothed blade (60+ teeth) to cut the rails to match the distance between your sleeved posts. Install the bottom rail first. Start by installing the bracket on the bottom, 1/16" back from the end of the rail. This will allow the screws to pull the rail tight to the post. We use a small builders square with a piece of thin cardboard taped to the surface, to quickly position the brackets square to the end with the right setback. A photo is attached. Mark the holes for each bracket and drill the pilot holes, with the exact drill diameter noted in the installation instructions. Fasten the bracken to the bottom of the rail; do not over tighten the screws. Then install a supporting block of Veranda cellular PVC trim under the middle of the bottom rail, with a screw through one of the baluster holes. This strengthens the rail assembly and is particularly helpful if you install flower boxes. See the attached photo. Cut a couple of additional pieces of cellular PVC trim to help you position the bottom rail at the right height while you fasten it to the posts. Position the bottom rail and mark the holes on the post sleeve. Make sure the rail and bracket are centered and the rail is level. (The blocks of PVC trim help, as noted above.) Then drill the pilot holes with the exact drill diameter noted in the installation instructions. A note: DO NOT use a level to position the rails. Your deck surface is probably a bit off-level, and you want your rails to match. Perfection is not the goal. The PVC blocks keep the rail level with the deck. Fasten each end of the rail through the post sleeve into the post. Stainless steel screws are softer than standard steel and tend to "cam out" when the going gets tough, particularly with old and hard wood posts. That's why the pilot holes are so important. Go slowly. If a screw starts to cam out, STOP IMMEDIATELY. Carefully back the screw out and start again with a new one. Install the balusters then the top rail, following the process for the bottom rail. Measure each rail carefully; they will rarely be the same length due to distortions in the posts. Attached are some photos of my personal deck with these products and PVC flower boxes. We used the same product with tempered glass panels along the coast of Massachusetts; a photo is attached. I hope all of this detail is helpful. Mark

Can the railings be cut shorter? My post are only 60 inches in between them

Can the railings be cut shorter? My post are only 60 inches in between them
Asked by: advisor
Yes, just make sure to cut them so an equal distance from rails is left on each side. You dont want a side with only half a rail.
