Product Overview

  • Helps curb climate change
  • All-Natural and organic, low carbon footprint
  • 3 lbs. of biochar blended into 9 lbs. of coffee skins
Biochar is a type of charcoal or activated carbon that is especially good at supporting plant growth. Ours uses invasive buckthorn for feedstock and our biochar kiln is fired without the use of fossil fuels. We add our organic fertilizer, coffee skins to charge the biochar with nutrients and add bio-available carbon to the soil. This results in a product that is ready to be added to your soil without mixing biochar and fertilizer yourself.
  • Holds extra nutrients and moisture
  • Helps curb climate change by increasing carbon content of soil and sequestering carbon for hun-dreds of years (Remember: Keep carbon in the ground, where it belongs. )
  • Protects watersheds by retaining your nutrients and reducing their presence in runoff
  • Encourages growth of mycorrhizae
  • Lightens heavy clay soils
  • No animal manure used in this product

Questions & Answers

What kind of fertilizers are used in this biochar to charge it up???

Asked by: Jorge714
The fertilizer used in this blend is coffee skins, NOT chicken manure. The bag is comprised of 75% coffee skins, 25% biochar, by weight. This product is designed to prevent the need to mix biochar with a fertilizer prior to adding it to your soil, it can be taken out of the bag and spread as per the instructions included in the package.

I have a five gallon bucket of worm casting. Can I simply blend in biochar, and if so how much, and use it as potting soil? If there is more to it than that to making good potting soil, what is it?
Asked by: Peter62
The home depot guy answering on feb 29th couldnt be more drunk, the question was about inoculating raw biochar with worm CASTINGS, not live worms, besides the worms wouldnt eat biochar anyway, its void of any nutrient BOOOO "MIKE "

I did use it for parts of my backyard that needed to have the ph raised. Biochar achieves this plus more. The Vermont Biochar Blend didn't have any instructions. I didn't activate it.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from 98% dried chicken manure The chunks of biochar are scarce and too big. I can tell this is not quality char because it smells too strong of burnt material. Properly ground up & matured char should not smell like this. Highly likely it will need to be matured & inoculated with beneficial fungus & bacteria before it goes into my garden. So disappointed. I bought 10 bags. Don't waste your money!!

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Too much chicken manure, too little Biochar Having closely followed the development of Biochar for a long time I am well aware of what it should look like in terms of color, texture, and consistency. Most of the product in this bag was *NOT* Biochar-Biochar- it was chicken manure, with *just a little* Biochar mixed in. This may not be the case with every bag, but indicates poor quality-control.

It provides a home for the beneficial bacteria and fungi while absorbing nutrients that plants can retrieve as they need it. Long story short, it holds the nutrients in the ground instead of washing away every time it rains or when you water. If you are an organic gardener, this is your secret weapon. I soak my homemade bio-char in compost tea for 24 hours, drain, then mix it with worm castings and compost. I also add bio-char to the bottom of all of my pots.
