Hello, Thanks for your inquiry. We have designed the potting mix to be ready for use. It has proper nutrients and fertilizer in the mix to optimize your growing. We send our mixes with a lower moisture content. There should have been a just add water sheet suggesting the use of water to hydrate your mix further when potting.

No, the soil is made from organic coconut fiber. You can read about it on the Vermont Organics website. "organic blend of OMRI-certified coconut fiber, organic nutrients and other organic materials." I imagine they are "reclaiming" the coconut fiber that is a byproduct of other coconut products.
