Questions & Answers

Is there give between the wires? Building inspector said if any movement then it would not pass. Can the wires be put closer together?

Asked by: Snapper
Cables can made closer by drilling additional holes. But you will need additional material. Horizonal and verticle stainless steel cable systems have been installed around the country for years. Check with your building code department.

Asked by: Tiger82
Yes you can, just have to make sure you cut the pieces the same for the top and bottom. Spacing of the cables is important so take your time and measure it out.

How do clean when it start to rust or what can you do, so it won't rust?

Asked by: Jackie
There are several rust inhibitor products on the market. Most often any rust is just a surface rust and can be cleaned with a mixture of baking soda and water. this is a 306 grade stainless steel and should avoid direct salt water area.

It looks great. Watch the installation video prior to installing. The distance between your top and bottom rails must be precise. I strongly recommend that you add 1/4" inch to the instruction's stated distance between the rails. For the 42" railing system the instructions state the distance between the upper and lower rails is 30.5"(30 1/2"). I suggest you make this distance 30.75 (30 3/4") in order to put sufficient tension on the cables when tightening them. Otherwise at 30.5" the cables snug up and bottom out but are not taut. The extra space give you extra tightening capacity on the threaded studs. Also the recommended 7mm open end adjusting wrench will not fit on the wire's barrel (female) threaded end, is slightly too small, and 8mm is too large. You will need to file down the wrench's 7mm opening and I also had to file down the wrench end depth to fit into the groove on the wire barrel. This wrench is a must for adjusting the wire's tension. I also suggest a small needle nose visegrip wrench to hold the threaded studs from turning when adjusting the barrels. You would think Dolle would supply a proper sized adjusting wrench with the product as you can't find one in the USA. Otherwise I like it very much, looks great with many compliments and meets my expectations. I used it to replace a plexiglass interior balcony railing so that there is still an unobstructed view to the room below and it also provides a contemporary style. I used 5/4" X 4" wood rails.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great product. about 1/3 the cost of doing horizonal! Easy to install. Allowed for full view of the lake that i live on. I recommend the 42" kit for 36" height also....just mount the bottom to angle iron instead of a 2x4

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Wood Balusters Goodbye Wanted to improve our backyard view but other horizontal systems were much more costly. Removed wood balusters, added horizontal 2x4s to attach lower cable base. Project was 60 linear feet that consisted of runs as small as 27" up to runs of 90". Removal of old and installation of new took about 20 hours. Using wood clamps, was able to complete the job by myself. Only weakness in the materials were the phillip screws for upper and lower cable bases. I purchased several new titanium bits and still had problems "rounding out " the head of screws. Love the final results. See picture

This product was looks nice and was installed by my contractor however, it did not pass inspection in Macomb Michigan . It does not meet Code of maximum 4" gap between balusters. I am going to have to install something else....I'm not happy. And it is rusting already.

I added a horizontal cable and tie wrapped it in the middle to each vertical cable and still had too much slack. I'm just waiting on whether the inspector will turn an eye or else I have to re do the whole rail system. If you need to get inspected, don't use it.

Bought several kits to redo my deck railing. had to make some adjustments to my deck rails to allow for the proper distance to fit the system. I recommend going a good 1/4" bigger space than instruction - it will give more tolerance for tighter cables. Easy enough to cut down to fit odd spaces at each end of deck run. Very easy to install and quick once you do the first one. Much better price compared to doing a horizontal cable and a fraction of the effort to install. Overall I really like the look and the price cant be beat. DIY level is easy - there is a video on youtube under insta-rail. I called manufacturer prior to install to get some questions answered and they directed me to video and answered my questions.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from save your money if you are buying this product to meet code requirements, don't bother. different cable lengths and insufficient adjustment prevent tightening cables to maintain required code spacing.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great views Purchased his for our cabin in northern Minnestoa, used 10 kits. Had to do some adjusting on my deck rails to get to the 24 1/2" required. Once that was done it went in really easy. Some cables seem a little loose but no different than other cable system I have ever seen or worked with. Love the vertical feature of this and the ease of installing it. Very pleased, far cheaper than horizontal systems.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Insta rail not marine grade stainless steel. I purchased 9 boxes of Dolle inta rail 72 x 24 1/2 . We live on a lagoon at the Jersey shore. My contractor installed them in the spring of 2016. End of summer 2016 the connectors that hold the cable and plates that hold the connectors are rusting. It is stainless steel but not marine grade stainless steel.

Just make sure you follow the height requirements for the span between bottom and top rail. There is spring tension in the cables that offer a bit of forgiveness. I gave it 4 stars as the stainless screws are Philips bit and can strip easily so maybe the makers of this product will read this and switch to a star bit screw.
