Product Overview

The ViaVolt 150-Watt Grow Light System is an enclosed ballast and reflector system perfect for primary or supplemental lighting. Each fixture includes a 150-Watt High Pressure Sodium bulb with a built-in socket, power cord, and hanging hooks. This grow light is perfect in applications where there is either no naturally occurring light, or where supplemental light is required. For example, in the winter months when the available hours of daylight may be insufficient for the desired plant growth, grow lights are used to extend the amount of time the plants receive light. The ViaVolt 150-Watt grow light plugs into any standard grounded outlet or timer.

What kind of ballast comes with this lamp?

The type of ballast is not listed. It only says that it is an enclosed ballast.

What is the Amp rating for this light and the foot print?

Asked by SDogg December 9, 2017

Answer

I didn't pull an amp load, or check nameplate, but P=IE will answer, where P is power, I is current, and E is voltage. 150 watt lamp plus assuming a 10% loss for the ballast means 165= I(120). 165/120 = 1.375 amps. This should be close even though the ballast losses are an assumption. Footprint is 15" L X 7.25" W X 4.25" H.

can a 150-watt metal halide bulb go into this fixture?

I can't find the answers on the site, but if I remember correctly, there is no difference in the ballast except the wattage, so yes if you match the wattage of 150w then I would think any bulb that matches could be switched and it should work. The bulbs are cheap, I would try it; but studies have shown that plants grow well through all stages with the HPS. You do want that one for flowering.

You need to get 250 watt metal halide grow light for indoors

You are correct. That means you buy two. It's only supplemental so you need the other bulb too if it's going to be a solitary source or sunlight.

is this for flowering or vegging

It works OK for both, however, after buying I found out HIgh Pressure Sodium (HPS) is best for flowers, while Metal Halide (MH) is better for maximizing plant growth. It works fine for me as I use it to start tomatoes here in Wyoming. I can get the seeds going April 1, and by mid-May I have foot tall plants ready to go gangbusters outdoors. I am seriously considering adding a winter crop grown to maturity, and if so will add another fixture in MH to "balance" the plant needs...vine ripened tomatoes are that good!

Where can I buy replacement bulbs for this light. I have looked all over and can't find them.

Can a 150W Metal Halide bulb be used in this as well or strictly HPS?

Typically magnetic ballasts are temperamental, and this one is no different in that respect...HPS lamps only.

Can I use a 400 or 600 watt bulb in this? It came with a 150watt bulb but I need a higher watt.

Growing plants a single bulb does not make. You need multiple colourations for proper depth and viteman content. You need to combine your light to fit your environment if your requirements are that high use a tube to bring sunlight in to supplement the grow lights you need. You'll find natural light easily will outshine a man made single six hundred watt light source.

I'm currently using this for tomato and pepper seedlings before they go outside. I would describe its light as more intense than bright. Its far superior to flourescents and other forms of lighting and is very efficient for lumens per watt. If I was using it for a full grow I would get a higher watt system but this one is perfect for my usage. My seedlings are growing so fast that I have run into the problem of them reaching the size I wanted 6 weeks before I can plant outside. The other good thing about high intensity lights is the plants grow thick and sturdy not long and stringy. As for area it does well over two of the rectangle seed trays so about 2x2 ft. The unit is built very well and the cord is thick.

Works well. We are hard on our lights. Use it as a side light for a variety of plants.
Works perfectly. Easy to mount. Switch wasn't seated completely but that was easy to push in. Two of these on three plants works like a dream on 300 watts! Add another overhead and you can't get more light than that. Then sit back and realize plants only use 3% of the available light!
