Are these food safe? can it be used to grow vegetables?

Asked by sg0014 April 17, 2021

Answer

Not sure what you mean "food safe", but yes, you can grow vegetables in them. I do it, but they are not sturdy enough to last outside in the weather for longer than a year, I think the UV will break them down. I stopped using totes for just this reason, UV breaks the totes down making them brittle.

can i plant vegetable in this pot is it safe for edible plants ?

Answer

First of all, these are made in the USA. As such they're not made of anything that'll harm you. Next, you're going to have to partially seal the knockouts on the bottom of the pots to plant veggies. I tried this and planted 1 (one) zucchini plant per pot and scratched the pot and contents into a shallow hole in the ground about 2 inches deep to stabilize the pot. Big returns on the plants. Good soil and fertilizer produced large amounts of squash per plamt. I got 2 plantings per pot as I watched the fruiting and ripped out and replanted for a second crop. Don't hesitate to use them as long as you're willing to tend and maintain your plants.

Can I paint these pots without the paint peeling off soon after?

Asked by InnovativeGardener August 1, 2018

Answer

I suppose they could be painted with a little prepping. Keep in mind that they are plastic and subject to a little give and take. I would say that the more they are moved the faster the peeling.

How sturdy are these pots? Can I put cement in them and put a pole in the middle?

Probably not, but try one to see, they have holes all around the bottom base. I think they may be too flexible for cement

Picked up at home depot. Fast delivery to store approximately 4-5 days. The pots are sturdy and have good drainage. Label on pots reads viagrow BPA free and etching on plastic reads made in China #2 recyclable. Has a plastic smell at first but dissipates with time. Placed them outside and planted perennial herbs. Not too heavy when soil wet and convenient to move around.

These pots are advertised as 5 gallon but are actually a bit smaller at 4.2 gallons. Their shape is rather short and fat which gives the roots more room to expand outwards rather than deeper like you would get in a tall skinny pot. I think these are perfect for smaller tomato varieties, peppers, and other plants of that size. The pots should last several seasons if you are careful not to drop them when full of soil.

I got these to grow smaller tomato varieties like cherry tomatoes. I had also ordered some of the smaller 3 gallon ones made by the same company for smaller plants. A couple of the 3 gal ones were damaged in shipping. The pots are plenty durable enough to last several seasons but they may split if dropped from a height when full of soil. Overall, I like these pots as they work fine and I like the side drainage holes better than the ones on the bottom.

I'm reviewing the 5 Gal. Heavy-Duty Round Nursery Trade Pot (4.2 Gal/18 l/0.56 cu. ft. 10-Pack). I got these mailed to me and they came right away and in good shape. I use these for tomato plants that I can't plant in the yard because of the local animals. They are heavy duty and have 4 drainage holes at the bottom. The measurements given are right on point. Pictures included.

These 5-gallon heavy-duty nursery trade pots are perfect for potting flowers that are going on your porch or deck. They are the perfect size for job. The flowers fit in them with a little room to grow and still look filled out. We have wrought iron in the front of the house and wood in the back. They look good in both locations. There are six of them in the package and they are reasonably priced. They don't include the bottom tray that you may see in my pictures...we bought those separately. They have four 1/2" drain holes on the sides at the bottom. They look great and we didn't spend a fortune on them.
