Questions & Answers

Can this be used for seed starting? If not, which soil should I use? Last year I bought a "garden soil" and no seeds came up. :(

Asked by: px
A SEED STARTER IS A MUCH FINER SOIL AND A BETTER WAY TO START YOUR PLANTS, MAKE SUCH THEY ARE MOIST BUT NOT DRENCHED.

Can this be used for raised garden beds?

My 7 year old wants a garden, so I purchased a raised garden bed so he can plant like his school class did. Should this be used to fill the raised garden bed or do you have to specifically get dirt that states its for a raised garden bed?

Will this be ok for a potted plant? I didn't realise I bought the wrong one until I had already planted my Olive tree.

1 cu. ft. Garden Soil is rated 3.7 out of 5 by 26.
Rated 1 out of 5 by from Weed seeds I bought multiple bags of Vigorous organic garden soil in the spring and used about 1-1/2 bags for gardening and house plants. I noticed a lot of weeds coming up, but that does happen outdoors. When I went back to use more soil later in the season I noticed that the soil in the bags was thick with growing plants. As I dug through the dirt there were large clumps of BIRDSEED! The soil was contaminated with millet and sunflower seeds and other seeds for birds. And there was a lot of it. So what happened? You sweep the floor of the area used for filling the other varieties of bagged products and use that to fill the bags for garden soil? I doubt this would matter if you were using it for grass seeding, but for house plants and garden this soil is a very poor choice. And there are many, many other choices out there.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Fungus Gnats I just opened the bag after sitting in full Texas heat for 2 weeks and grabbed two handfuls (women hands) and there were 5-6 fungus gnats flying around after putting it down, counted 7 gnat worms in the soil itself just from the first grab. Hard to miss seeing that the soil is black and the worms are clear/whitish with their black head. I was hoping this would be better than buying the coir alone and having to rinse it due to salinity. Ugh... In my dreams!!! After I get my worms breeding like no other and pooping lbs, I'm going to stick with black cow and peat or coir and let my worms go at it before using it for seedlings. After all, 75% worm castings plus 25% compost does my seedlings wonders!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from The best bag of soil I've seen I have spent so much money and time buying soil. I do not know what this organic soil by Vigoro different from others by the same company- they seem the same by the title Yet this bag is more money for less product. I have bought natures choice and some others as well. I came home with seven bags of this today. It is super black super rich, pure soul. Not a lot of mulch, branches, rocks - none of those things. Just super dark SOIL.not clumpy or sandy or - anything other than the best soil that says organic I've ever found.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Now with Plastic! Bought 12 bags and dumped them into the garden. While mixing in with the other soil I noticed little junks and pieces of blue, red, and clear plastic bags were mixed in! Advertised as an Organic soil but they don't include on their label that the bags also include garbage. I'm disgusted with this product and the fact that because of it I have pieces of plastic mixed throughout my garden.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Organic Product, Great Price, Good Info I switched from MiracleGro to Vigoro Organic Garden Soil as they had better origin info. After going through over a Dozen bags, I never had any problems with gnats or trash just great results. I have had some problems with Cut Worms and Grub Worms which can't be attributed to the Product as these are just larvae of Moths and Beetles which fly in and lay eggs. By the way there is a great new product which eliminates these pests and many more called Biologic's Beneficial Nematodes available on line and in some stores.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Love this soil!!! We love the fact that it is all organic materials, no chemicals. The COIR ingredient is great for natural moisture control. Very satisfied with this product, will continue to buy.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Better than expected Much better than cheap POTTING soil... just add some Perlite to this if you need POTTING soil & $ave! Otherwise just mix in with your dirt (mine is all clay unless I've planted there before). I try to put quite a bit underneath and around the plant then mix-in with some dirt. I usually add some organic fertilizer like 10-10-10 and even a handful of clean, dried, & crushed egg shells because my soil is acidic with lots of oak trees. There's a saying the plant is only as good as the dirt :) From my experience I'd say that only a few plants thrive in poor soil, so look those up if you don't want to end up buying potting/garden soil every time you plant. Don't buy the cheap stuff - it is not much better than top soil and in the long run your plants will probably die. BIG TIP: Never EVER buy TOP SOIL - it is the worst stuff there is. Just burned -up dust with absolutely zero nutrients.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Oh my Should have read these reviews first. Bought ten bags and all of them had trash in them They do not sift the soil to get rid of this stuff prior to bagging it? Made for a lot of extra work so NO I do not recommend.
