A:Â You certainly can mix it in, it will help make the soil less heavy and help drainage. I myself prefer to mix it with potting mix for containers. I find potting mix works better in containers. Garden soil can be too heavy and hold too much moisture.

Perlite is a critical non-organic component in soil for succulent keeping. It adds airiness to prevent compression yet the roots can break it down to make room in the pot as the plant grows. It helps a lot with the soil be well draining so it doesn't rot out the succulents when watered. The current succulents being stocked at my local stores comes in soil not suitable for long term keeping as it stays way too soggy and dries too hard, but a mix in of perlite helps with the moister regulation while transitioning the plant from starting soil to something more supportive for long term care. There is never enough perlite in bagged potting soil, so being able to add my own has helped the quality of life for my plants.

Mineral vs organic
Combine with all purpose soil do Great for my cactus and succulents. I have been using it for years. But now when I look at the labeling it says it is organic. When did a mineral became organic? It may be use in organic gardening, but it definitely is not organic.

I needed this perlite to transplant a banana tree into a larger pot for our patio. It makes the pot lighter in case it has to be moved and also keeps the soil from getting compacted when our cats sleep around the base of the banana plant. For some reason it has been hard to find this summer, so when I found a couple of bags listed at a local Home Depot I purchased it online to make sure it was there when I went to pick it up. Score!

Vermiculite is an organic, asbestos-free soil amendment that promotes faster root growth and gives quick anchorage to young roots. Vermiculite helps retain air, plant food and moisture, releasing them as the plant requires them. Mixing vermiculite in flower and vegetable gardens or in potted plants will provide the necessary air to maintain vigorous plant growth while reducing watering frequency and allowing roots to spread . To care for plants and lawns - where soils are sandy, mix vermiculite into the soil, as this will allow the soil to hold water and air needed for growth. Vermiculite can even used alone or with soil for seed germination.
