Questions & Answers

Will the grass only last a year?

I am trying to choose a grass seed to fix my lawn which was ravaged by grubs and harsh sun. I applied Bayer 24 hour grub killer today to kill any gruvs and will also put down GrubEx (its May) to kill the grubs for next season. I want to seed the lawn so it will grow in the spots which the grubs killed but a few articles I read online mentioned that this Vigoro grass had a lot of annual seed in it, which only grows for the year and will need to be re-seeded next year. Is there a better seed I can buy that will not only last one season in the Northeast? (I planted Scotts last year and was very underwhelmed by the percent of the seeds that did not germinate ... and they wriggled out of their 'no quibble guarantee' which means I will never buy another of their products, so no more Scotts seeds for me). Any recommendations would be welcome.
Asked by: Dave
I had this concern but it came back beautifully even after this past, harsh Idaho winter. It even says 40% (something) like that is just an annual and it still did fine.

is this a good for pets ? i cant seem to keep grass in my yard with my dogs .

Asked by: needsgrassthissummer
Pets are probably going to be hard on all lawns but this seed mix is probably a little above average for durability, especially for a reasonably fine, tall growing grass (unlike a coarse Fescue).

How does it do in Midland TX hot weather conditions

Asked by: Sp11555
It is great for Texas winters. Will probably die in the summer.

I winded up purchasing the wrong product (for repairs only), nothing happened. So I bought Vigoro Contractor's seed and planted the grass seed on half of my back yard and within two weeks it started to germinate. Within a month, that side of my yard is full of grass. I'm pleased. The key is to keep watering it twice a day, & to keep the grass trimmed. You can see in the photo how one half of my yard looks nice. I will finish the other half shortly with confidence.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Vigaro Grass seed My one section of yard by my porch needed some healthy grass growth and this seed once set in place took a few days to begin germinating but numerous small patches are beginning to sprout up and hopefully I will finally have a nice area of healthy grass. There is more than enough grass seed to do my entire yard if I want to and which I make just to add some more bulk to my yard. So far I am satisfied.

It is an annual grass which means it will only grow for one year and then die. If you put this seed down in the fall, in New England, half of it won't come back in the spring so it's a waste of time and money. I didn't realize this so now I have to re-seed in the spring. After some research I read that Panterra rye grass was developed for Texas winters because their summer grass goes dormant in the winter. This shouldn't be sold in the NorthEast in the Fall.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Good Seed Just spread this seed in a heavy traffic area that the doggies love. Too early to tell results and will update review after a month. I have always had good results with Vigoro products including their fertilizer and seed.Last year added some fill to low areas on my property and then Vigoro starter fertilizer and seed.As usual happy with results. Its nice to save a few bucks and get a good product.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Definite Thumbs Up About 5 years ago, we bought a 120 year old farm house. As you can imagine the weeds that filled this lot were unsurmountable. I began stripping the so called "sod" (weeds) at about 1" per section of the yard, which varied in size from 100x100 feet to 40x20 feet. I've tried purebreed varieties, I've tried the standard contractor types for other areas I don't see in day to day inspections. To date, I've tried 11 company products of varying blends and varieties. I have to say this is the best product I've used so far in terms of product and reliability. The grass is a dark green spreading VERY rapidly after germination. This is also at the upper end of the germination scale in terms of speed. I had sprouts in 5 days and a "lawn" in about 2 weeks. I applied a 10-2.6 fert after and it's golden. From scratch to walking, with this seed and fert, took just over 5 weeks and looks GREAT!!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Fertile Seed - you will not be disappointed in this product...no filler!!! I don't usually leave reviews but this grass seed is better than ANY I have ever put down during summer. Spring and fall are when you seed but I had some areas that I was really working on converting from a garden to yard....granted the soil content was prime but this stuff came up in a week! Sprouted in a few days. Give it water and it will come through for you every time. Getting more now for my fall seeding...not wasting time or money with the other seeds that grow grass that dies out. This is for real! No need for all of that filler that other companies use to say the seed will sprout....this does without any of the science....all natural!

In fact the 3rd planting was in late October in Idaho and both plantings (the other in mid-September) were successful. Even before Winter the September planting was lush and beautiful. I had lots of people ask me how we got our lawn looking so nice so fast. I purposely waited a couple of seasons to review this because I was concerned about the percentage of seed that was not perennial. As it turned out both years the lawn has come back great in the Spring and this past winter was unusually hard on lawns. We continue to get comments about how well "we" grow a lawn but it is mostly the seed.
