Answer This Question

A:  Hi, Wolverine - Yes, this fabric is kinda papery, more so than fabricky, but that should be about what you'd use for your project. There are perforations all over so water should drain just fine. We have used it in a number of applications, and I can testify that it is a long-lasting material, and works well in just such an instance. Good luck!

Q:Can this be placed under 3/4” sharp gravel?
by|May 1, 2019
1 Answer
Answer This Question

A:  Generally speaking the rock will not tear or piece the fabric unless you really stress it (jump on it or try to lift the fabric with the rock still on it).

The barrier is not water permeable. According to the description, the fabric allows free flow of air and water. Based on my test, is is complete impermeable to water, it did not drain even after more than a day. Instructions specify to install shiny side but I did not see any difference whatsoever. I did test both sides with water but it seems to be impermeable on both sides. Otherwise the fabric is easy to work with, easy to cut and easy to stake with garden staples. It looks interesting, with 'bumpy' surface that is different. I am trying to think of a use where the impermeability would be an asset but weed suppression does not seem to be it since it would keep standing water. Otherwise it is good looking and easy to use.

Vigoro’s lawn and garden fabric and fabric staples are convenient, easy to use, serves my purpose...
Vigoro’s lawn and garden fabric and fabric staples are convenient, easy to use, serves my purpose perfectly. I’m reviewing both Vigor’s lawn and garden fabric and the staples in this review. Finally! Spring is here! Yay! I can finally lay the fabric and start planting for the spring! I’ve had the landscape fabric and staples for five months now; unable to install them during the winter, cuz yeah, 2 feet of snow, lol! Oh how I love the spring! So tired of the snow; especially this past winter here in upstate NY and the east coast - we’ve had multiple whopper storms and snowstorms - ugh, bring on the 90 degree weather! Anyways, I’m planting willows (a hybrid variety) that will be my living fence around my farmhouse to keep the deer critter outside my zone. Granted this is deer country, but that doesn’t prevent me from building a “deer exclusion zone” where I can actually plant things that won’t be browse down to a nub. Ugh, too many deer, not enough natural predators to control their population explosion. I staple the fabric down and use the staples to hold down the fabric; I’m glad the staple pack comes in a 500 staple count; I’ll be using tons of it since it gets pretty windy up here at times. After that, I use a pencil-thick metal stake and pound through the landscape fabric down about 10 to 12 inches to make a hole for the willow rods that I push down into the holes. I firm up the dirt around the rods so it makes full contact with the willow rods - willows are amazing in that they root where ever dirt and moisture make contact with the rods. Then I push down two more staples right next to the willow rods to keep the fabric from flapping up and potentially scraping and damaging the bark. When the weather gets warmer; I’ll be using grass clippings as mulch around the willow to keep in moisture - willows love water and I need to keep the ground from drying out until the willows’ roots are able to grow and secure a steady water source. The landscape fabric will keep the grass from competing with the willow starts - while they’re just starting out, they’re pretty vulnerable; they need all the help the can get until the willows are settled in. After that, they take off like crazy. These hybrid willows can grow 7 to 10 feet in a growing season; amazing for a privacy fence and as a windbreak.

This Vigoro weed control fabric is easy to work with, and it has been very effective in reducing weeds. I used it under wood chip mulch, and I secured it with landscape staples I already had (see pictures). As you can see from one of the photos, my neighbor did not use the weed control fabric and he has weeds sprouting and I do not (this was taken a year after it was installed). It is well worth the effort and small cost to put this down before you put down mulch because it will save you a lot of time-consuming and back-breaking yard work later! It cuts easily with scissors, and where I already had some flowers in place, I just made an X cut in the fabric to allow the plant to come through. Mine has lasted for years in various parts of my yard. I highly recommend it because it is such a time saver in the long run!

We were really impressed with this product. We were not expecting it to be such high quality based on the price and what we could see on the outside of the package. When you open it up - you can see it's a nice thick weed-mat with added plastic chain-link on top which makes it very difficult to tear. Yet, it was super easy to cut with a small utility knife. It's dark and difficult to see through so it should work well to block out sunlight from weeds. Finally, it did not wrinkle and roll up on itself like the typical weed mat always seems to do. So it was easier to layout and get into place and cover with bark this fall. We will update this review in the spring once we can see how well it fights against weeds in this super tough area of our yard.

The Vigoro 4 ft. x 100 ft. Polyethylene Landscape Weed Barrier Fabric is a must-have for anybody ...
The Vigoro 4 ft. x 100 ft. Polyethylene Landscape Weed Barrier Fabric is a must-have for anybody that does a lot of landscaping. This size is impossible to find and really cuts down on the number of rows I have to lay. Although not stated on the packaging, I would consider this a commercial grade weed barrier fabric. I was very surprised at the thickness of this product. The fabric I normally use is easily torn and requires multiple layers to be truly effective. Based on the thickness of the Vigoro 4 ft. x 100 ft. Polyethylene Landscape Weed Barrier Fabric I feel one layer is sufficient and will be much more resistant to tears and holes. The added weight also makes it a little easier to use on a breezy day. I tried to think of something negative about this product and just couldn't do it. Recommended for anyone that has large areas to landscape.

It does not work!
First off, the instructions to this is completely useless and confusing. It states to lay the "shiny side" up, but both sides are exactly the same, so I tested the permeability first before putting it down all over the yard. This can easily be resolve with a sticker that tells you which side goes up. I have 2in of river rock on top and after 2 months weeds started popping up through the fabric. I went online to see that this product is now discontinued, adding to my frustration. If this is the "heavy duty" version, I wonder how the quality is on their lower end product. Now I have to remove 4 cubic yards of rock and replace this fabric. I bought the higher end version to avoid having to do extra work down the line but it only took 2 months and now I have to tear my front yard apart. I'm looking to get a full refund on this.
