Keep your floors, carpets, furniture and decks protected from dirt and scratches with the help of these Cork Mats from Vigoro. The natural look of cork will blend in seamlessly with your stylish home or patio decor. And the natural cork pads can also be used as placements, coasters or in craft projects. The soft cork has a black plastic backing to add durability and strength to the cork plant mat. They will help protect surfaces from the rough edges of planters. Cork is naturally buoyant and will not absorb water. For this reason, it is not recommended for outdoor use and will not protect from water damage. Saturating the cork pad may discolor or damage the surface below.

Q:Can you use this as drainage in potted plants?
by|Mar 22, 2023
1 Answer
Answer This Question

A:  This may not serve as the best option for drainage in plants due to it not having any channels for water to drain from. We hope you are able to find a solution that meets the needs of your project.

I have probably 40-50 plants around the house so I have a lot of experience with these mats, as virtually all of my plants have this mat under them, in various sizes. I think they look good and do what they are supposed to do, but I have two main issues with them. My first issue is when you first get them. The label sticker is IMPOSSIBLE to get off of some of the mats. Some pull right off in a single pull, but others require almost an hour of fingernail-picking to remove the paper from the plastic, and then a dose of goo-gone to remove the sticky backing. Even one bad sticker out of 10 is enough to ruin your day. The second complaint I have is with the glue holding the cork and plastic together. The glue must be very thin or inadequate because after about 1-2 years almost 1/4 of my mats have delaminated and required me to re-glue them. Not a deal-breaker, but something that should never be a problem with a good quality mat. Overall, it does what is is supposed to do, but lacks a little bit in the quality department.

I use this mat under a glazed pottery planter that is in a west facing garden window. That area can go from 50* to 80*, which at times makes the pot and saucer "sweat". Although I have a towel under the saucer, the towel would collect the water then it would soak down to the wood platform underneath. With the cork mat in place, any "sweat" is contained and then released back to the air and the shelf stays dry.

Used as a trivet, hot pot/pan landing point. The cork is attached / adhered to a flexible plastic backing. My only complaint is the manufactures non-removable label...why? There are no 'required' markings / identification for this thing. My wife and I, tried to peel it off - unsuccessfully, it shreds. I did not soak it to soften the adhesive yet. Don't know how that will affect the cork upper. I don't know if the label will 'transfer' to a counter, shelf etc.

This is a neat, versatile product. The mat is intended as a coaster under plants but can serve many other purposes. The top cork portion is water proof or at least water resistant. That allows it to be used to protect from water staining, as a small placement or a coaster for planters, cups, mugs and bowls. Cork is also great insulator so this mat could be used to protect surfaces from hot objects. The mat is 4" wide and about .24" wide. The cork portion is slightly thicker than the plastic layer on the bottom, which is fairly stiff. The sticker on the bottom warns that 'saturating mat may discolor fabric surfaces'. I did not try that and the plastic does not seem to be too likely to discolor. Water would not absorb into the cork after 10 minutes, making the mat a good choice to protect from water damage. Overall, it is a neat and versatile product, handy for many uses.

The 6" Vigoro Cork Mat is perfect for keeping moisture that seeps through your clay pots off of your fine woodwork. It's about 1/4" thick with cork on the top and black plastic on the bottom. Also, it gives your pots a more finished look. It's really very handy to have around because it will also work as a trivet or even a coaster. It's well crafted. It doesn't feel like it will fall apart or split.

This cork mat has a thin plastic coating on the top side to protect the underlying surface from scratches and light dampness / water damage. The mat is just about eight inches across and it has some flexibility. I am using it to protect the surface of a cabinet that has my potted plumeria plants sitting on it. You will see from the photograph that the mat is somewhat larger than is required for this plant pot, however, I intent to re-pot the plants into a bigger pot in the springtime. This will give them more room to grow and, you never know, they might become as large as their recent ancestor who stood over six feet tall.

This item is dual-layered with cork on the top and somewhat flexible plastic on the bottom. It needs to be used cork side up. In the beginning, I thought it might make a nice spoon rest; however, after further consideration decided that would not be a good idea. It is best used for its intended purpose - a protection device under vases, flower pots, etc. It is in no way absorbent on either side, so it will not be helpful in case of spills. It will prevent scratches and stains when used as directed, though.
