Questions & Answers

Can you burn anthracite coal in this stove?

Asked by: mike
Anthracite is better. This stoveis designed primarily as a coal stove, but it burn wood as well. New regulations in 2015 (ahem) forbade describing it as a coal/wood stove unless it had EPA certification, which it does not.

Can wood be burned in this stove, or is it recommended to use only coal. This looks like a great stove but I'm only burning wood.
Asked by: Johnny57
I burn wood and/or soft coal in mine. DO NOT burn hard coal in this model, you will crack the stove as hard coal burns very hot.

Asked by: waterbaby
You're allowed to use small amounts of wood to get the coal started. This explains the large pile of cord wood you have stashed in the back yard. Lol - it's prettysmall for wood. Some people burn "Wood Bricks" in it. More efficient that way.

can I assemble the bottom half of the stove backwards to face the outside wall? I want to add a pipe for outside air combustion ? This way it won't pull air from around my Leakey windows and outlets... Or is there another coal stove that has this outside air kit
Asked by: cold3
Thanks Chuck, But your answer defeats the purpose of outside fresh air. The whole idea is so it won't burn up the oxygen inside the house, and pulled cold air through all the cracks and windows in your house. If you have fresh air from outside. If you open a window in the middle of winter that defeats the whole purpose. If you have an outside air kit installed when you open the window the air will blow out of the window not in from the window. if you don't have an outside air kit you open the window the cold air will come into the house. Does this make sense? It's nuts to open a window anyway in the middle of winter. Unless maybe your name's Rockefeller. LOL.. sorry if this came out weird I'm typing this on my phone

Customer Reviews

Rancher 1,000 sq. ft. Coal-Burning Stove is rated 4.1 out of 5 by 8.
Rated 3 out of 5 by from It serves the purpose I guess it was the name that attracted me. (Rancher, not Vogelzang). Cookie wanted a small stove to cook on in case the electric went out. That happens frequently out here on the ranch. It will serve the purpose. I took the advice of another reviewer and plopped the stove out in the middle of the north 40 and lit her up. The stench that came off the unit kept all the varmits away for miles. If I had burned off the paint in the cookhouse, I'd a been in the doghouse for a long time. Now this here stove has a way of warming you twice. The first time is splitting up that tiny firewood that you have to squeeze through the lids. The second is when you burn it. Wish I had better access to soft coal. As far as quality goes, it isn't half bad. Those Chinese must be still pretty new at casting so they build it with a lot of slop in the joints. It is like a coat that fits but only because it is one size too big. Overall, we really bought it for the looks, not for serious heating.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Quality Construction. Could use some improvement in casting legs to fit. Product could be greatly improved if equipped with hinged door on the lower ash compartment and a back in the ash pan. Legs did not fit properly and were difficult to install. Grinding edges of some legs and reaming bolt holes was required to get proper alignment and fit. Lid lift handle does not fit slots in lids.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from BEST STOVE EVER I will admit the legs were troublesome getting on but we did get them on. We purchased a round cast iron flat skillet and drilled holes in it and cut the handle off and set it in the bottom of the stove to make it a wood stove only. We also drilled some holes in the top of the right front lid to create an air supply and used a pretty glass candle holder to limit the air intake at night while we slept. 98/100 we had coals in it when we got up and did not have to relight it in the morning. We LOVE this stove so much we bought a second one for our new home. The paint does burn off quickly and it will need a new coat of paint after the first year of use. Just buy good quality high heat stove paint and you wont have any trouble making her look wonderful again. This is the best stove we have had and believe me, we went through MANY before finding the right stove for our small home. And I love the fact I can cook on it when the power goes out even in the summer. We simply opened the windows to let the heat out during and after we were done cooking with it. Cant say enough about this wood stove ! Its perfect.
