What is the THD of this generator? Is it suitable to run a DirecTV receiver and LCD TV?

What is the THD of this generator? Is it suitable to run a DirecTV receiver and LCD TV?
Asked by: CraigJB
It's not about THD as much as it is about voltage regulation. Every time a new load comes on, the gen will slow down for a second as it picks up whatever was just turned on. As it slows down the voltage will drop for a second until the gen catches up. These dips over a period of time can damage things like TV's, receivers, and any kind of electronics. Tripp Lite makes a small "Power Conditioner". This is what you need between the gen, and your electronics.

Which fuel is more efficient, propane or gas

Asked by: Larry
By price, gasoline is cheaper. Where I live, gasoline runs out first in the event or a hurricane so its nice to have dual fuel options. LP is more expensive but if it is all that is available, its nice to have a back-up source.

Im not Hank Hill, and dont have much knowledge regarding propane. Saying that ....- whats the required propane (regulator) psi to run this generator

Asked by: NC10735285
The generator comes with a regulator (mounted to the frame) and a short hose is included to connect your BBQ Grill tank, or something similar. There is a valve on the control panel you rotate and the generator does the rest. The regulator atomizes the fuel and as it enters the carburetor "most" of the work is done. With gasoline, the carburetor does the atomizing of the fuel. Hope this helps. - Hank Hill

Will this run the whole house for a 3 or gor day period

Asked by: Sopani57
Edit: I was going to delete my "life span" comment but missed it when pasting in the text. This generator has a 2 year warranty. But the manual (go WEN website to download) doesn't mention a "life-span" for the engine or other components as far as I can see.

11,000/8,300-Watt 120V/240V Dual Fuel Gasoline and Propane Powered Electric Start Portable Generator with Wheel Kit is rated 4.7 out of 5 by 312.

I have only run it on propane as I will only use gasoline if running out of propane. It starts and runs my 3-ton central air conditioner and anything else that we use in the house on propane fuel. The lights do dim briefly as the air conditioner compressor starts and the generator throttle opens up to handle the load, however I could not be more pleased with this generator for the cost. Every feature of this generator appears to be a cut above the competition. The voltage is very stable, I noticed a few volts difference between each 120 leg, but that is due to unbalanced load on each side of the generator. The frequency of mine runs a bit high, between 60 and 61 hertz, but no small generator is going to hold stable frequency of less than about 3 cycles per second unless being an a very expensive inverter model. Overall a great generator and a great buy from Home Depot. If purchasing, do remove the red shipping brackets before use.

I used to service generators for a regional company, so I got to see a lot of "engineering failures" in this industry. This one has not been put to the test yet, but I have a strong feeling it will work well for our needs. The output meter is a nice feature. This will help users from overloading the unit. Key start is always welcomed when it comes to small engine devices, especially when you consider the circumstances for which it is intended to be used (no power). A downfall for this piece of equipment would be the pull start. If you look at the file photo, the handle for the pull rope is blocked by the ignition switch / display panel. To pull start the engine, you have to bend over and pull at an awkward angle. The port for the rope points towards the fuel tank and the handle must be pulled at a 90* angle to that opening. A small relief in the panel or a different angle on the pull cord housing would have been a better way to go, but when was the last time any engineer ever listened to someone that has actually worked on the equipment they design? "Mechanics were created because Engineers need Heroes too." Pulling the generator out of the box, you will need two body builders, or just cut the sides of the box at the corners and slide it off the pallet. You will need 6 different wrenches (for three different bolts). Again, a little courtesy could have been applied towards those that will have to put this machine together on "the other end". Two red shipping braces must be removed from the rubber engine mounts before the rubber feet are mounted, the tires / wheels installed (no tools needed) and the moving / lifting handles must be installed (two inserts, a bolt, a nut & a washer for each side). There will be some frustration in finding the right sizes of wrenches / sockets. All of them are metric and all of them are different. This put me off a bit. (FYI: To save costs, you could use the same bolts for the engine shipping braces as needed for the rubber stands and eliminate some confusion by using the same size hardware for all hardware that needs to be installed by the buyer.) On the plus side, the additional outlets are a nice feature. We have a generational home with a built-in 1 bedroom unit and the ability to split the power source in more ways is a plus. On the negative side, the fill neck for the (gasoline) fuel tank should be off set so any spills potentially go directly to the ground and not on top of the fuel tank itself. Large spills will run onto the (hot) engine, muffler or stator / rotor assembly. The fuel gauge is a nice feature. Another reason we bought this particular unit is the LP option. "Maybe the regulator could have been mounted at a higher point on the frame?" The choke could have been made a different color so it is easier to find in the dark. I do not care for how the positive battery cable was routed directly in front of the oil fill / oil dipstick. A few more inches of battery cable would have made that problem go away. I have worked on different brands of generators that had worse locations for the battery. I would add that a little Di-electric grease will help prevent corrosion on the battery terminals. I saved the oil bottle that came with the generator. When I change the oil, I plan to fill the bottle, then use that bottle to fill the engine crank case. I get it … size and capacities of small engines are always odd, but when everything is so small or hard to reach (or BOTH) making it harder to fill the engine to the oil level right is not the answer. I know .. I am nit-picking this thing to tears. Its a great generator and I plan to use it for back-up power this Hurricane season, maybe even for some remote worksite jobs. For the money, we got the better deal when you count kilowatts and size vs. availability and affordability. I don't love everything about it, but I don't hate it either. There are some small changes I would make if I were on the design team, but I am not on that team. Last year we did not have a generator, so if nothing else, this was cheap insurance for not having one this year. Lastly, choose the SHIP TO STORE option. There were some issues with shipping and this was delivered (to our home) a week after it was promised. Not a Home Depot issue, but if I mention it, this may save someone else a headache.

Easy to assemble (install wheels, handles and feet, add oil, connect battery and you're up and running.) It comes with 30w oil, which is nice, though I'll probably change to 5W30 since cold weather is on the way (the manual suggests 5- or 10-W30 for cold weather use.) It has enough power to run my entire house through a transfer switch. The 240V outlet is an unusual size- requires something like a dryer plug- and it's hard to connect (the wheel seems to get in the way.) That's really the only negative I can say about this machine at this point. I really like the fact that it can run on gasoline or propane, in case I'm out of one I probably have the other. It seems well built- we'll see how it holds up over time. But, I upgraded to this from a much smaller Wen generator, which I had for years with no issues. One piece of advice- always use fuel stabilizer as you probably won't be using it very often. I still intend to start it every few weeks, to ensure it runs when I need it to.

I have only had it since 11/8/18 . It has been wired into house and test fired . Handled start up loads of central air , well pump , water heater , Re-fridge all TV's , modems , routers . Receiving 53 clean signals over the air HD 5.1 surround sound TV . Running off of a 500 gallon propane tank . It handles everything I throw at it . I hope to never need it but I am all set if we have any serious days without power . The duel fuel is the key for me . No gummed up carburetors if you run on propane . I thought it would be a beast to pull start . It was not , it cold started on 2nd pull . I don't know if it has a compression release but it pull starts fine at 58 years old . The internet says Wen has poor warranty support . I am taking the chance that I won't need it . I hope that gamble pays off .

I researched the company first, finding out they have been around since 1951, and are headquartered in Illinois. The products was shipped with solid packing material. All the parts listed were in the box. The wheels, handles, and feet went on in about 15 mins. None of the these parts were bent or misshapen as I have seen with other products needing some assembly. I then only needed to connect the battery terminals, load the 37.2 fl oz of oil (the exact amount was included), and add gasoline(it could also have been propane, as it is dual fuel(the hose was included)). I adjusted the choke, inserted key, and it started right up. I ran the generator for about 30min then shutdown. I am confident it will be ready to power our home when needed. I will update as soon as I have the opportunity to use the generator during an actual power outage.

I tried to install the feet. Everything ok for the first foot. The second foot the holes on the frame don't line up; they're too far off to try to drill - at least 1/4 inch - maybe a little more. It might be a good machine but I've been burnt before. If they can't get the hole drilled right I'm not taking a chance on having something else (maybe something more significant) be off as well. So I'm sending this one back. Not sure if I'll buy another one or switch brands.
