Works good for small shop, but I made it better
I got one of these a couple years ago and it has moderate volume and vacuum that works well as I use it mostly one tool at a time. But I did find chips and debris can quickly clog the intake screen and bog everything down. I built a separator using a POWERTEC Cyclone kit, made a Thien baffle, and assembled it on a trash bin. Then I put it all on a cart to move wherever I want it. I can't post a video of it here but you can search You Tube for my HalDIY channel to see it working.

This was perfect for my small format woodshop. This dust collector was simple to set up and use. Only negative was the metal mesh right in front of the intake fan. This clogs really easily and will affect performance. Luckily, it is very easy to remove. This was my only modification to the system and it has been working like new ever since. If you are a hobby woodworker or have a small shop like I do, this budget friendly dust collection system should definitely be considered as a strong contender.

Nice and compact. Does a decent job for home DIY projects. Much better than a shop vac.

This review is for the 5.7 amp WEN dust collector. This is generally a good product for handyman individuals who want to limit dust in their workshop areas for woodworking activities where space for a larger-sized cyclone-type collector is not there. This product is not satisfactory for collecting wood shavings or even relatively small-sized wood chips as all material collected either goes through the fan or ends up blocking the screen ahead of the fan. Most everything about 1/2-inch or larger collects on the screen ahead of the fan, blocking airflow and requiring removal of the suction hose to clean the screen for the unit to remain effective. Shop vacuums and most shop dust collectors put the filter bag ahead of the fan so that is not an issue. I chose this product knowing these limitations. I use it to collect sawdust from my table saw and compound miter saw. Overall, for that purpose, I find it adequate and rate it "good". Despite the high motor speed of 4500 rpm, the product is relatively quiet during operation when compared to my shop vacuum that I had used previously for that purpose. For best use of limited space, this product can be wall- or shelf-mounted, as delivered, my choice being shelf-mounting. I purchased WEN Model No. 28221, 20-foot long hose from The Home Depot to facilitate use. WEN does a great job with packaging and overall product quality from my experience, having owned their products for decades, this product a welcome addition.

I like the idea of this product a lot. There is a need for it in garage workshops. Professionals purchase far more advanced and expensive dust collection systems. But, the average DIY person who works out of his garage or carport can benefit from a dust collector that catches a lot of the dust. Not all but a lot. This product has real potential. The motor sounds strong and it pulls the air in with ease. But, and this is a big but, it must be able to connect with your tools. This is where you will have to invest some time and effort. WEN does make a 4-inch hose that will connect with the intake port of the dust collector. However, the next issue is finding step downs to attach to your tools. This is where it can get challenging. I contacted WEN and told them that I liked their product. But, how do I use it without some sort of hose collection system being made available? I especially felt that they should make a collection system that works for their tools at the minimum. I have quite a few WEN tools and I measured the dust collection ports and they are all different. They go from 1 3/8 inch to 2 1/2 inch. WEN says that because all tools and all manufacturers have different sizes it is very difficult to make a hose collection system that is universal. However, they did say that they were working on the concept of creating one for their own tools. Home Depot does sell a WEN Universal Dust Extractor Hose for this product. It is a separate purchase and does not come with the Dust Collector motor and bag. At the very least this would be an additional requirement unless you have some hoses that will fit. Some 4-inch hoses, which this uses, are outside diameter and others are inside diameter. This is 4 inches outside diameter. Once you have the hose, it is up to you to find ways to step it down to the tools you want to attach it to. There are many online as well as hardware store options. A lot, if not most of this will be trial and error. It is my sincere hope that WEN does come out with a hose dust extraction system that can be purchased as a separate add on and that will work with a multitude of tool dust outlets. As I mentioned I very much like this concept for the DIY person. I decided to give this product an overall rating of 5 even though the hose issue concerns me. I realize that there are others out there who might not find this to be an issue at all and will easily be able to find a solution. Once operational this product can keep a substantial amount of saw dust out of your work space. It will not alleviate the need for a dust mask, when appropriate, but it will keep your work space cleaner. I look forward to the hose dust extraction system that I am sure WEN will develop. This product comes with wheels that work well for moving it around and two of the wheels lock to hold it in place.
