Seems that with 3 gears you would need to use the low gear during roughing, and then would need to stop change to say the midrange gear?

I've only needed the default gear range so far which allows 500rpms to 1700 rpms. For heavier or odder shaped pieces the 500rpm setting has worked fine for the initial roughing. Althought, switching gears to the lower 250rpm doesnt seem like it would be too hard to do if needed.

Does Wen make a bed extension for this lathe? Or is there an after market product? Part number?

Asked by Steve June 3, 2020

No, Wen does not offer a bed for this. I actually called them this morning asking about it and was disappointed. They offer a 23" extension for another model.

For a personal shop, the machine is pretty good for the price. My complaints are that trying to find all of the typical tools needed for it instead of having them included was a little pain. If you don't have a lot of pressure coming from the stationary end, the chuck tends to slip. Other than those things, it is a good machine.

Works great so far. I used it daily for about 2-6 hours for the last 3-4 weeks. Arrived missing a foot pad but a quick call to Wen support resolved that. The tail stock quill pin was also defective in that the exterior screw that allows the handle to spin or tighten didnt fit into the metal portion of the handle. Looks like the interior threads of the piece we're drilled or set correct. I adjusted by using a extra larger bolt I had around the garage. Also called Wen Support about it and they immediately shipped a new quill pin. Overall, very happy with the lathe. This is my first lathe so I'm still learning but fits my needs so far. Only con I found so far is that WEN does not offer a bed extension for this model. Being able to push the tailstock back further would be nice. I have found my larger chisels are obstructed by the tailstock when gouging bowls. Also, using a drill head and extension on the tailstock to drill out the centers of pieces can be challenging on deeper pieces. I can easily add a 4" extension to the drill bit but anything longer becomes a challenge to mount if the wood piece is longer.
