I don't have it next to me but I would say 5-6 feet I use it with an extension cord most of the time.

What is the height of the belt assembly? I need to know how tight space it will fit in. I’m sanding the adjustable louvers on a shutter.

Hi Rod. The fattest part of the belt assembly measures 3/4" in height as seen in the pic below. If you only need to access the very tip of this sander, that tip measures 5/8". Have fun on your project!

I have had mine quite a while and really like it. I does NOT have a grounded plug. Just a two prong plug.

I don't think you can. Plus, I don't see any way to attach it. You might call Wen directly, I got good results from the service center. I needed a quill-return spring for a drill press at work, and they sent one free. They can help, if a solution exists.

I have 3/8" slots to sand. Can I use a 3/8" belt on this unit?

1/2 is about how wide the belt is not how tall it is. But no it will not fit into a 3/8 tall slot.

Does the file Sander work on metal if so does it have the same life time as if it were used for wood

No, but I use a similar tool to deburr sheet metal at work, and the belts last longer than you'd think. At least, I was surprised.

How well will this sander work on wood? How many RPMs? What is the tool made of?

It works on anything in my experience. Metal, plastic, wood, masonite. No idea what the RPM is, or the belt speed in inches-per-minute. The arm is metal with plastic rollers

Anyone used one of these for sharpening electric hedge trimmers?

Asked by Nickster June 3, 2018

Answer

I use mine to sand in tight places, as for which it was designed, I doubt it could be used to sharpen a hedge trimmer, I would suggest maybe a fine small triangle file, not sure if that would work, I don't have a hedge trimmer, if I did, I would take the blades apart and use a fine small flat file. Hope this helps.

I needed to sand through multiple layers of cracking paint around 12 window casings. These casings consisted of multiple tiered layers of wood, giving it a detailed touch. However, sanding these down to wood proved to be a challenge. This WEN sander made the job super easy by quickly removing ALL the layers of paint. This sander was also able to get into tight corners and spaces. Lower grit sandpaper allowed me to shape the wood where needed. I really like the fact that this is a corded sander, so I didn't have to worry about running out of battery juice, since I had SO many windows to do in one sitting. If not for this WEN sander, sanding all this down by hand would have been tedious and pain-staking. With the WEN sander, I got the job done in record time. Also, changing the belt is super easy. Just press the tip in and it locks in place. Replace the belt and press the release button and you're back in business. This WEN sander is amazingly light and had no issues using it all day long. The variable speed setting is nice because you can set it to the speed you want, then move the sander along the areas that need sanding, without worrying about how deep to press a trigger. Very handy tool to have around!

As a career machinist using proper air powered Dynafiles costing hundreds of dollars; I really was not expecting much from this thing. I really was expecting it to bog down but, turns out, the weak point is only the included belts. In fact, it seems to maintain speed better than the Dynafiles. And I’m very impressed with how easy the belt changes are, very well thought out design. It also stays put even when you catch the side of the belt on something, I’ve yet to pop it off track in the past ~month or so I’ve been using it. The only thing I wish this had was a trigger controlled speed control, the switch and thumbwheel make it a two-handed operation. Other than that, it’s about as good as it can get. Totally unexpected.

WEN Variable Speed 2 Amp Detailing File Sander with 1/2 in. x 18 in. Belt fits a definite need. I have a collection of sanders and one would think they can do the job. In spite of that even with my small detail sander I still have to get out the sandpaper and block to get into crevices and odd shapes for sanding. This belt sander helps in that regard. It has only a half inch wide file sanding belt that's controlled with a variable speed knob that goes up to 1,800 feet./ minute. The handle is comfortable and has a locking knob so you can rotate the sanding belt rod up, down and horizontal. I'd say the range of movement is about 25 degree's from horizontal in both directions, up and down. This allows you to hold the handle at a comfortable place while the sanding end does the work. The tool comes with a dust port which is good at collecting dust. My 1 1/4-inch small shop vac hose fits easily and taped it for a secure fit. Changing belts is not a problem, the unit comes with three different grits, from 60 to 320 grit. Just push on the head that is spring held it loosens the belt, slip it off and put on another one. Slip the dust cover off, its held by plastic clips, and adjust the tension lever, if needed. That's it no big deal at all. It runs fine, not too loud, but it does get hot fast. Its a small unit blowing a lot of air to stay cool. The way its designed you are really using the end and going back an inch or two up against the work. I was using the low grit and it was fast. Don't apply much pressure let the sandpaper do all the work. Small point, they recommend you use separate belts for wood and another one for metal work to prevent metal filings from later scratching the finish of any wood work. I already have a couple of WEN sanders and they hold up just fine. This one seems a little delicate, but it should be as dependable as my others. Its really for close up detail tight work and for that purpose its well suited for the job.
