Can this sprayer create a smooth finish with latex paint? A number of the HVLPs seem to leave a stippled surface.
Asked by: Painterly
Yes, thin with “Floetrol” per directions. Also check air flow, consistency& distance from sprayed surface.

Asked by: steve
I haven’t used Kilz with an HVLP. A personal preference as I don’t like the extra cleaning. I use all water based products.

Can this be used for overhead spraying like the underside roof of an outdoor patio
Asked by: Marcus
Yes it can, Using about a 45°angle, I sprayed my living room ceiling with this same model, with lots of plastic cover. No need to thin the paint either. You will have overspray. It did a great job!

Studio Pro HVLP Stationary Sprayer is rated 4.7 out of 5 by 28.
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Made the job easy My sole experience with spray painting consisted of using ball-bearing rattle cans. I confess that there was some trepidation in diving into a full-blown stationary sprayer. The Studio Pro is, at first, a little intimidating. Big turbine air box, thick black air hose, two different sprayers; each with multiple controls for air power, material feed and various spray patterns. However, after reading through the owner's manual and familiarizing myself with the various features, it became a lot less unnerving and it all started to make sense. Wagner provides a 'Quick Start' pamphlet but I would recommend that you take the time to read through the full owner's manual. It goes into more detail and the troubleshooting guide is helpful in sorting out the different settings with regards to how the paint is being applied. (English, French and Spanish) Also, provided is an indoor masking instruction sheet and a large, heavy, paper sheet to practice spraying with the different settings. There is a learning curve and there will be some experimentation involved with getting the right setup for each type of paint. For me, thinning the paint was necessary using latex paints and primers. With latex, try to get an eggnog or buttermilk consistency. I’d also recommend the use of disposable paint strainers. My particular use for the Wagner was to repaint my front deck railings. In the past, it would take me all of 3 afternoons with a paintbrush to cover all of those 2 x 2's. Once I sorted out the paint thickness, the air power setting and the material feed setting; it took me about ½ an hour to spray a coat onto the railings and around the base of the deck. I found myself carrying around the turbine box for most of the job. When painting something this large, the black air hose comes in a little short. I suppose that for a typical bedroom project it would be fine. Cleanup was uneventful. The owner’s manual gives complete details. There is a small parts brush included. Also included are a replacement nozzle and a small sample of petroleum jelly to lubricate the o-rings on the sprayers. An arduous project that I dreaded was truly made extremely easy using the Studio Pro. I will stop short of saying that it was fun though because I still had to do all the cleaning, scraping and other prep work before starting to paint… so there’s that. My only complaint is that the sprayers should be of the gravity-feed type. (with the paint jar on top) The siphon-type sprayers used with the Wagner are prone to leaving leftover paint in the jar and it seems that siphon-type sprayers are going the way of the Dodo. I took off 1 point for that.

I figured I'd give this unit a review since all of the others were part of a promotion and could turn people away possibly. I purchased this unit without ever owning or operating an HVLP sprayer before. My immediate need was to paint our cabinets, with other projects lined up down the road. I wanted something that could handle most paints without thinning and that would be simple to use, I believe I achieved both of those goals with this. With my cabinets now complete, I feel comfortable reviewing this product and recommending it to any homeowner. When I first received it, I was pleased to realize that the large box type unit isn't all one large compressor. The large box is actually so that you can store all of the parts to this internally and not have to have things scattered around when you're not using it. I had everything in my kitchen taped off (make sure and follow the guidelines with the instructions, when in doubt tape off a larger section) so I decided to get right to it. I did a couple test sprays on the included paper just to see how fast it came out and then went right to the cabinets. I did a 'walk through' to make sure the hose wouldn't bump up against anything and then started. I took my time and it maybe took me an hour to paint everything. I had a couple runs where I started but other than that, with my Valspar Cabinet Enamel, everything looked pretty smooth. When I went back over it with a second coat I got a nice glassy look on most all of the areas. The operation of this unit is very easy. Simply add the paint into the hopper, screw it back on, and go for it. I screwed up a couple times by hitting the trigger before turning the air on, the paint will dribble out and you'll want to spray onto something you don't care about first to get the droplets out (my bad). Turning the nozzle face will give you different types of spray options, horizontal, vertical, or spot; depending on what you're doing all of these could be beneficial. It's pretty easy to clean when you're done, I haven't figured a good way to get one of the parts off to clean it yet (little red ring on the inside of the finish nozzle), but everything else cleans up pretty fast. Pros: Everything stored in one container Simple operation Can handle paint without thinning No louder than a vacuum Cons: A longer hose wouldn't hurt Tight fit on the inside, have to have everything aligned perfectly

I have used HVLP sprayers before and this is realtively easy to handle comapred ot other units. One of the fist improvements is the tubine being located seperately, this drasticlaly reduces the weight at the gun. when you are doing a lot of spraying, I guarantee that you will apprecdiate the difference. as far as fan adjustments, you do need ot dial in the finash based on paint, humidity etc and I found this to be realtively easy to accomplish. overall the finsih was smoopth and the gun was easy to handle. cleanup was no harder than cleaning any other spray gun and is the least rewarding part of the project. i like that the hose is stored inside the unit and thought this was a very good experience.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great for Projects Big and Small I use HVLP spray guns for my autobody work and it is the way to go. With HVLP you get considerably less over spray/wasted paint and more paint on your project. The Studio Pro is a great example of a completely portable HVLP painting system, you are only limited by the length of your extension cord. The Studio Pro is very easy to use, set your spray pattern according to the instructions, fill with paint and go. It is a very good idea to clean the spray tip regularly on large projects as it can clog. I have only used it on a fence staining job so far but it will be my go to system for future projects. It is priced in the mid range and will save you time and money in the end. I highly recommend the Studio Pro.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Super small job Sprayer Got this sprayer for several smaller jobs around the house and shop. First was finishing the shop bathroom. The iSpray nozzle/sprayer layed a nice coat quickly. For me it did take several tries to get the nozzle and volume right. I reworked some old shelves using the Control Finish nozzle. It laid a nice smooth coat. Once again, it took me a while to get the nozzle volume and pressure right.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great for refinishing chairs. This is great tool for painting furniture and we have a lot of other craft projects. Wipe off the nozzle with a wet paper towel while you're painting and the spray is so consistant. It's easy to clean too. [This review was collected as part of a promotion.]

Rated 5 out of 5 by from So little overspray and easy. It wasn't until I started spraying that I really appreciated the beautiful consistent finish that I got. It's fast and efficient. I really like how you can change directions of the nozzle to get the spindles. I learned a lot about how important cleaning is but it works better if you keep it clean. After staining, I use mineral spirits after I clean out the cup and it really cleaned it in soapy water. But use the little brush that comes with it too.
