I am not sure of the density difference between the asphalt and joint compound. But, as inexpensive as this tool is, I would try it.

I never intended to mix joint compound with the gizmo I needed it for a project in my After school class. We used it to mix up shredded paper into a fine pulp so that they could make recycled paper as one of the activities for Earth awareness month. The took worked wonders and if it can mix up shredded paper that well I have no doubt that it will make short work of mixing joint compound or even tile grout of any other similar project. I can see the one I bought being used many more times. Making the paper was great fun, playing with the pulp pushing the excess water out once the new page was formed. The kids loved it. Unfortunately when we tried to carry the newly formed pages inside where they would be safe until they dried the wind lifted the sheet they were on and most of the pages were ruined. we'll do something special with the pages we managed to save and come up with a different method of transporting the finished but not yet dry product the next time we try it. I'll accept any suggestions that will fit in our, $20.00 a month for 20 students, budget.

Do not use with a plastic container
This will shred a plastic pail/bucket leaving small plastic shreds in your material. I ruined a bucket of taping mud with this, very frustrating to try and do a final coat with small plastic pieces dragging on the wall.
