Q:Can the Watco oil and finish be used over a prestained butcher block countertop?
by|Sep 14, 2023
1 Answer
Answer This Question

A:  Hi Ronnie, thank you for reaching out! Our Watco Butcher Block Oil & Finish is a standalone wood treatment, and must be applied to bare wood only. We do not recommend this product for countertops; it is designed for use over butcher blocks, and other wood items such as wooden bowls. - Rust-Oleum Product Support 2

    Q:Is this product water resistant?

    Answer This Question

A:  Happy to help! Rust-Oleum Watco Butcher Block Oil and Stain does provide a protective finish that will withstand typical use and is water-resistant. If using on smaller items, they should be handwashed for full longevity. This is a treatment, and this product will need to be reapplied over time to ensure full protection. Heavier use will require reapplication more often. - Rust-Oleum Product Support 3

          Love this stuff!
[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] Used this after staining a piece of butcher block to use as a countertop in my washroom. It is very simple to use. I ended up applying 2 coats, but should have done 3 just to be on the safe side. However, definitely apply in a well ventilated area where your project can sit while airing out. It took a couple of weeks for the smell to die down.

            Great product!
[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I’m really enjoying using this. We usually just use mineral oil on our cutting boards but this product lasts much longer. It’s very easy to apply and covers well. The clean up was easy and most importantly, the finished product looks great. Highly recommend!

                As expected
[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] This worked as expected for me I have a small IKEA kitchen island/cart that is birch wood and came unfinished. I wanted to stop the top from absorbing stains but still have a food-safe working area. I finished the whole thing using this oil and finish and it looks great. It looks natural and not thick and shiny like a polyurethane. It brought out the natural color of my island and I love the look. I had previously been using butcher block mineral oil on the island but that just wasn’t feasible for the whole piece long term. This looks as if it’s only been oiled but will last long term. It was easy to apply with a cotton cloth, just wipe on. Takes 6 hours to dry before recoating but it was dry to the touch within around 30 or 40 minutes. The odor from the finish is sort of like polyurethane but less strong. I would recommend using this in an open garage or outdoors. however if you have a very small piece that you are finishing like a cheese board, doing it near an open window would be fine. I included pictures to show the difference which is difficult to see in photos except on the bottom section where it really brings out the tone of the wood.

                  Color is NOT dark
I was expecting a dark/darker color given the name and shade- Hazelnut. It basically made the butcher block the shade of wet wood.

Thank you for reaching out and sharing your experinece. Prior to each use, it is essential that Rust-Oleum Watch Butcher Block Oil is thoroughly stirred. We also recommend stirring often during application. The final color will also be heavily dependent on the condition and type of wood used. Additional coats can be applied to help deepen the color.

                    O M Gosh!
I already did a review and as promised here is my follow up picture. I did 2 applications followed up by a satin clear top out and it is exactly what I hoped for! I did a light sand between coats per the instructions and followed the drying times as well. I am sure it would have gotten a lot darker with more coats but this was the effect I was going to for. Absolutely love it
