Questions & Answers

How do u know how much water and salt should be in the tank

Water boss 900
Asked by: Tbucket
You add 2 gallons at installation and always keep your salt above the water level, you shouldn't need to add any water after the initial install. Simply start up instructions on the manual or online.

does the water boss 900 have a bypass valve so I can water flower and vegetable plants

Asked by: porg
Yes. There is a knob on top of the valve. There is an arrow on top of this knob. If the arrow on the knob is turned so that it is pointing at the word 'service' this means that water is flowing through the water softener. If the arrow is pointing at the word 'bypass', water simply does a U-turn inside of the valve and does NOT pass through the Waterboss. A few people suggested flushing the water through the water lines as it will already be softened. This is true. However, the volume of water stored inside of your internal plumbing is very small and would only take a few minutes to flush. In other words, this is not a problem.

do the drain hoses have to be higher than the location of the drain? what if your laundry sink or drain source is taller than the unit ?
Asked by: HouseMole
It's a gravity drain, no pump. It has to be lower than the unit to flow out.

This system was installed in my home, by a licensed plumber, less than two years ago. System's control panel stopped allowing water resetting, not long after installation. Recently I noticed that the system would not stop recirculating water and had to be placed in the bypass mode. After contacting the manufacturer, they sent me a replacement recirculating valve. The new one was installed and leaks heavily. The manufacturer has offered no correction, for this issue, besides to pay for another plumber to come to my home. This unit is not worth the nearly $500 price tag. I will never buy a Waterboss product again and certainly would not recommend it.

The first lasted 17 years with 1 control replacement and 2 brass valve assembly replacements in that time period. The cost is about one-third of many softener systems. It's expected that the homeowner will install, and my husband did so in 2000. He also installed the replacement parts. The new softener was installed by a professional who sells softener systems made by Waterboss' parent company (whose name begins with a P but I can't find it). If you can handle softener installations, I recommend a Waterboss. After reviewing various comments by other buyers, it sounds like I've been one of the lucky ones. Hopefully, this new Waterboss won't give me any problems, either.

Upon installation, the resin (or some small black material) filled the water lines throughout my house (after first manual regeneration) and clogged ever toilet, faucet, shower, washer, and water heater. It was a nightmare. Here is a video that best depicts the troubles it caused. https://photos.app.goo.gl/vpt90cI9ldRXQEvl1

Much easier to load salt and service. Easy hook up in the same place as my old one. I ordered 2 Sharkbites 3/4" stainless hoses. Just needed to shorten my 1"x 3/4" copper pipes and install the Sharkbites. Been running great so far. The only problem was shipping. It had to come all the way to California and the shipper did not treat it well. By the condition of the box I am sure the shipper did not follow the label and ship it upright as the top sliding cover and a top tank ring was broke. WaterBoss was great. They quickly sent me the broken items I need. Would be nice if Home Depot stocked the unit it the stores.

Do not heed the reviews of owners who have not owned the unit long term--I loved it for a couple of months also. As an owner for the last three years, I have had constant issues with this unit. Every 3 to 6 months the softener gets "stuck" and sits there emitting a beeping sound until the owner or tech performs a partial disassembly to reset the unit. Beyond that, I have needed replacement parts at least three times for more complicated issues that have recurred. I will complement the company on its willingness to send replacement parts promptly, but once the warranty is expired--the same old problems will recur and the part costs for those issues are exorbitant.
