Questions & Answers

will this plug work with my smart phone

will this plug work on a 5g wyfi setup
Asked by: misterbig2489
Yes you can control with smart phone. If memory serves it looks for a 2.4g network, I don’t think it connected to the 5. Overall it works fine when connected using the app.

Mini Smart Plug is rated 4.1 out of 5 by 658.
Rated 1 out of 5 by from Simply does not work Been through all printed and online troubleshooting and community support boards. Seems to be a common issue. App keeps saying lost connection to Wemo mini. Every. Single. Time. Spent over 2.5 hours two different technically savvy people and two different devices trying to get it to work.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Super frustrating I bought this over a month ago and it worked fine with my lamp but then I acquired other cooler lights that I wanted to tell Alexa to switch on and off. That simple just move the switch to another outlet with another device. I would also like to say I am pretty tech savvy, but the struggle with this stupid plug is unbelievable. I am spending hours just trying to connect the thing and not to mention I live in town so I have at least 2 strong connections and it takes 5 minutes just to tell me it was unable to connect. I looked up what to do and it said restart it and whatever so I did so many many times and nothing works. In fact it still isn’t working. It’s extremely frustrating.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Setting up the second one was not easy I purchased two of the WEMO Mini Smart plugs. I loved the fact that it had an on/off button right on the device. I could use it immediately on a lamp. I set it up with the WEMO app and had no problems. I attached it to my Google Home App. Then I went to set up the second one and I could not get past the screen where it wanted me to set it up with the "HOME" app. I also power cycled my iPhone to try to get rid of the second one. Nothing seemed to work. I ended up deleting WEMO from the Google Home app and resetting both Smart plugs. I went through the set up again and was able to get them to work. Spending over an hour on this was not what I had planned for that time. Now that they are set up I am happy with the performance. I can use voice commands to turn them on and off through my Google Home mini's. I can also assign them to a room and they will be controlled when I say to turn off or on that room lights.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Works well, but "Gotcha" designed into it. I've had great success with Wemo switches for the most part (Their app needs some work). I bought two of these to allow me to reset my Slingboxes remotely, plus I needed the smaller size version of the receptacle switch. The switches setup fine and since I am always traveling, I thought I had overcome a major problem. However much to my surprise I found the Wemo Mini Smart switch TURNS OFF, when it loses power. This means after a power failure, what ever is plugged into this switch is turned off unless you physically or remotely turn the switch back on. Normally this would't be a problem, except as soon as I went out of town a Wemo app upgrade deleted my entire network. Naturally this can only be re-setup in network. No access until I get home. I did figure out a work around to avoid this problem in the future. You need to schedule the switch to turn off/on daily. I used a minute on/off. By doing this your switch will turn itself back on daily. I've tested this work around and it is effective.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Rock solid — very reliable The Wemo Mini Smart Plug is very well regarded by professional reviewers, and I can see why now. I have not had any issues since setting it up, as compared to the iHome smart plugs I was previously using. My old smart plugs would sometimes not work with spoken commands, which was very annoying. No issues with the Wemo. The other nice thing is that the Wemo plays nice with a lot of standards — Amazon Alexa, Apple HomeKit, etc., so you don't have to feel like you have to choose one smart home platform or another. My only gripe was the setup process. It took longer for the Wemo to get registered and logged in compared to the iHome, and it did take multiple attempts. But once it was set up, I was good to go. Although this is not part of my formal review, I wish that Belkin creates an outdoor version of their smart plug at some point in the future.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from flawed product Dated firmware makes this product incompatiable with new routers, unless you IT support massages router setting to allow for a firmware update. After wasting hours upon hours review the problem online and on the phone with an annoying customer service team (who obviously get paid by the minute as they took every opportunity to reinerate evey move and tiny detail as to stretch the call, causing a excruciatingly painful pace to zero resolution), i can say i am done with wemo. When looking at alternative options, check the reviews as some competitor products suffer from the same problem.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Work wonderful but not plug and play I have a total of 5 of the mini switches in my home office and at least that many in a combination of the mini and the two other Belkin smart switches located throughout my home and for the most part they work very well. As in most home offices, I have plenty of those AC adapters powering computer, monitors and all sorts of electronic gadgets. The biggest downside of the adapters is (and actually most electronic equipment these days), regardless of what ever it is they are used for, they draw power from the wall even if the power to the device they power is turned off. Using my mini switches I can selectively turn off the things I want turned off so they don't draw power, and thus save on electricity. At night when I go to bed, I want the adapters which recharge my cell phone, my watch, and other gadgets to have power, so a mini switch is used but on a schedule which only runs in the evening hours. Then we have a couple other of the Belkin smart switches which turn on lights for our house plants on a regular basis. The hardest thing so far is setting them up. I am a computer professional with significant network experience and because of the really poor instructions really were hard to set up. In fact I thought the first one I tried to set up was broken until I tried to set up the second and it was showing me the same problem. I have been using them about a year now and they work problem free for the most part. They are not without problems, but so far they have been minimal. I have had to re-set one up after it "lost" it's configuration after a power failure. To me though, the biggest fault is how long the take to "re-acquire" the network after a power outage (my network is on battery backup so it never goes down). Also after a power outage, they can take a few days to get back on any schedule on which they were previously running. I do find them to serve the purpose, and so I will continue to use them and to recommend them with the provisos I have outlined above. flk k
