A:  Measurements are dimensional -- 1-1/2 x 1-1/2 square. There is a common misconception when looking for lumber products regarding sizing. Most of the time if buying from a home center, their materials are referred to in their original NOMINAL size; which is the lumber's rough cut size. If you were to buy from a lumber yard, where the material is still partially rough cut, then the measurements would be shown as 2 x 2 square. It could also be referred to as eight-quarter (8/4) square. If ever in doubt, take a tape measure with you when you shop.
